OUR REVIEW

All of Sawyer Bennett's heroines in the Off series tend to have a tough outer armor that makes it a little tough for their male counterparts to break through but I think Rowan takes the cake. She's very protective of her heart and she's absolutely NOT going to make it easy for anyone to get anywhere close to it. She's lived the last 5 years depending on herself, and only herself, and she has no intention on changing that anytime soon.

Yes, this story started out completely different from any of the other's so far, and Rowan is definitely not as easy to get to know or like as say Danny. It was a definite turn, in a good way, for this series. Nothing was stagnate, at all....and getting a taste of Flynn's life was incredibly awesome. The first few pages sucked us in quick, fast, and in a hurry!

Flynn joined the NYFD to help fulfill a strong need to save as many people as he can. Even with a loving family, great friends, and a deep respect for his job, he takes risks that put him in harm's way ...like he's trying to make sure not one single person escapes saving on his watch....constantly trying to heal the hurt from years ago. He's such a wonderfully tender and genuinely sweet guy. Sure, he's got super hot sex appeal but he's not broody or a jack ass or broken. He's a healer--always looking to help or fix things.

He also was a different change from some of the book boyfriends that we've met in the Off Series. Okay, so maybe only Nix was the really, really damaged one, but they've all been really different! Flynn is much more all about his family and talking to his sister and cousins and parents constantly. He is definitely my ideal guy, so I couldn't figure out why Rowan was so distrusting! We find out little pieces of her life as we go along and it all begins to make sense! He is so upfront with her, so there was no questioning his motives...which also is something that is kind of abnormal about him. And crazy hot!

A house fire puts Rowan in Flynn's path and thus begins a very interesting journey for them both. Rowan's journey will require that she softens or risks losing the first bright spot she's had in years. She has to learn to let go of the huge chip she has on her shoulder and allow people to help her, namely Flynn. Understandably this is hard and makes her feel vulnerable but ...OMGAH, ROWAN!!!, sheesh...let people in! She's so used to not depending on anyone that she doesn't know how to deal with simple human kindness. Meanwhile, Flynn's journey will test his hero complex. Flynn has to learn how help her without making her feel less than she is for taking his help; he's very good at reading her and shows the patience of a saint in giving her space to work through some of her trust issues. It would be very easy for him to take offense at her cynicism and distrust, but he doesn't.

That whole situation with the fire was CRAZY! and crazy awesome writing! I was enthralled and could not put this book down. Which is a norm for the Off Series, but you always have to wonder by book five if a series is going to continue to be good. And I can honestly say that I loved this one just as much or more than some of the others...and want her to write MORE about these people! Also not always in a series can previous characters be involved and it not always be a good direction. I loved how much Nix and the gang were in this book...and that we got to see how all of their lives were turning out.

All of our favorite characters from the Off series  (and a new one-- Tim!) pop in from the sidelines to offer their two cents about Rowan and Flynn and Rowan + Flynn. There is some healthy skepticism about these two and their intentions ....and eventually support for whatever it is they are doing. It's interesting to see the interactions of all of the Caldwells and their significant others. I loved reading their perspectives and to see what they'd been up to! I love these people and how much they've grown...all of them! Tim needs a book. Say it with me. Tim needs a book! :)

Sawyer Bennett makes us work for the ending in this one. Up until the very end I was fussing at these characters but am happy to report I was thrilled with the ending and, most especially, the epilogue. I sincerely hope that she can squeeze another book (or more!) out of the Caldwell clan; I've come to love them so much! Man oh Man. Did she ever. I loved Flynn and I loved Rowan and Sawyer Bennett has another home run with this one in my opinion!
