OUR REVIEW:

If you've read anything by Laurelin Paige you know that nine times out of ten, you're in for a sexy good time. The Open Door is in keeping with all of the Laurelin Paige I've read--it's super sexy and I think all you readers and lovers of things sexy will appreciate what's going on here. That being said, I actually love this novella for the truth bombs she's exploding all over the place. Laurelin Paige does an excellent job of tapping into what marriage, especially after babies and a full time career, can feel like--mundane. It's not that you want that, it's just that one day slides to the next and you wake up wondering how did we get here? Paige offers a solution to this couple that may not be available to all of us but serves as an easy reminder of how any of us in a similar place in our relationships can try.

So yes, this novella feels like a sexy fantasy but it also feels like something many readers will identify with and appreciate. Grab this short sexy read and enjoy, y'all.

About THE OPEN DOOR:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Laurelin Paige comes a new story in her Found Duet series… I knew JC was trouble the minute I laid eyes on him. Breaking every rule in my club. I never forget how he made me feel that night. With all the women in that room, all those bodies on display, but his eyes were only on me. Of course I married him. Now years have passed. Kids have been born. We’re still in love as always, and the sex is still fantastic... And yet, it’s also not. Like many who’ve been married for a while, I long for the high intensity of those days of the past. I’ve heard rumors for years about the Open Door. An ultra-exclusive voyeur’s paradise. A place to participate in—or watch—any kind of display you can imagine. My husband’s eyes would still be on me. And maybe other eyes too. If that’s what we want. So when an invitation to come play arrives, how could we turn it down? **Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

REVIEW: Fighting Absolution by Kate McCarthy

FA - BT banner.jpg
Fighting Absolution by Kate McCarthy
Release Date: September 10, 2019
Fighting Absolution Ebook Final.jpeg

Court: I have spent life waxing poetic with how much I love Kate McCarthy, her writing, her characters and just everything this woman does...and I legit thought I had reached just about the top the bar that she set for me in which I could love her. I was wrong. This book absolutely slayed me...in the best way possible. I honestly thought that Fighting Redemption could not be topped, because it was an epic tale of love, loss and ahem, redemption. This book however, really delved deep into what we knew before and gave us such a better understanding of really Ryan, Jake and Kyle. I am so in love with these characters, and to be honest know ahead of time that you can read just this book and live life fine...but you really are highly recommended to read Fighting Redemption first. Shel: OmGOSHYES to all things Court just said. Kate started out as an amazing romcom + adventure writer and I loved her for it; then she slayed with the emotional roller coaster of Fighting Redemption and she just keeps one upping her self and I have no idea how it's possible, but she shows us that it is. Fighting Absolution took all the things we loved about her writing and the characters we knew in Fighting Redemption and went dug in--the emotional parts were even more emotional and the funny bits, funnier, and the romance was just so incredibly sweet.

Court: Jamie has a legit rough go of it, and I really enjoyed how we get snippets of her life in a way that really helped the journey of the story move. Shel: I felt the same! I didn't feel that those scenes took away from the story at all (nope), and how she developed a powerful relationship with a boy she barely saw through a fence was everything and hit me hard emotionally. Hopefully Shelley can help me elaborate on this, but this girl has known loss and has a hard time accepting any emotional support from anyone around her. The things she experiences in the army and out of it really shape who she is and shows us all that she has overcome, and still has to overcome. Shel: Yes, she was built to be strong, to suck up every ounce of weakness that wanted to come to her surface and push it down and down and down--I have no idea how she made it through what she did without breaking; she was so tough. She was exactly what is referenced in the title: a fighter. She barely let anyone in because they always seemed to leave her and so she carried almost all burdens on her shoulders, alone. I don't know how she didn't suffocate from it all but she didn't and while I admired her strength, I also needed her to see that needing others didn't make her weak. Thankfully there were a few characters who showed her how it felt to be loved, how to grieve loss, and how to allow yourself to need others, in a healthy way.

Court: This book is an emotional heavy hitter, and I really, really, really, really cannot say enough how much I loved every single word. Every. Word. I love the character development, and the honesty, and the real journey through grief in multiple capacities really helped me a lot. There are things that still are hard for me and I appreciate an author's ability to put into words thoughts that I have with myself. How to hold on, and let go at the same time...still perfecting that, but Kate McCarthy nailed it. Shel: She really did. It is so very evident that Kate takes the time to make sure every piece and part of her novels are just right. The dialogue, pacing, and details are pitch perfect, as they always are and I love that Kate can give us hilarity in one novel and devastate us in another and always have us begging for more.

I know you should be riding the high of the great reception you're going to get for this book, Kate McCarthy, but I really hope you're plotting and writing what we're getting next because I'm so ready for it.

Excerpt:
After an early night, I wake in the morning with my body sagging into the ground. “What the hell?” I roll and flail, my air mattress squeaking like a little bitch. Bear laughs and I turn. He’s watching me, thoroughly amused. “I’m not here for your entertainment,” I hiss, my back aching from an uncomfortable sleep. “Someone needs her coffee.” “Did you poke a hole in my mattress?” “No, but there’s something poking a hole in my—” “For the love of god!” I rise up, the knife from beneath my pillow in hand. “I’m gonna stab yours just for that.” “No!” He laughs, half-rising from his own bed, warding me off with his massive paws. “That damn thing is probably why you woke up on the ground.” I lunge across the tent, my knife jabbing straight into his inflatable mattress. It tears a long, deep gash in the corner. Air hisses out in a wheezy rush. “What in the actual fuck?” he shouts, falling back with a stunned laugh. “You’re such a bitch!” The knife drops from my hand, and I double over, gasping with laughter while the airbed deflates around him, sinking him slowly to the ground. “Now neither of us have a bed!” “Oh well.” I tuck my knife away. “We can start on those bottles of red tonight until we can’t feel a damn thing, and then it won’t matter.” I unzip the tent and step out, my jaw cracking from a yawn that stretches my face. “Bring me coffee!” he orders from inside the tent. I turn my head, sneaking a glance his way. He’s standing over his duffel bag, clad in nothing but a tight pair of bright blue cotton boxer-briefs. It’s almost a physical punch. I linger a moment before I look away, back to the ocean, trying to dispel the image, but my mind won’t let it go. The wide, muscled shoulders, his tattooed arms, the thick washboard abs, his body scarred from combat and a lifetime of hard and heavy training. I shiver with a sense of longing and have to remind myself that it’s just Bear as I start on the coffee. The same Bear who laughed his ass off when I tripped on the edge of the jetty in Broome and fell in the water. The one who snores like a freight train after one too many beers. The one slowly turning into a mountain man because he hasn’t shaved since we left. The very same Bear who tips his head back each night in his camp chair and makes me scratch his head with my nails while he sits there and whimpers like a little girl.

Interested?
The subject line in the email my husband had forwarded was intriguing, to say the least. When the notification popped up on my phone, I felt the pull to read it right away.
But Braden needed a diaper change, Jake was kicking at the door of his bedroom where he was currently in time out, and I’d just discovered Theo had found a black marker. The kid desperately needed a bath and my hallway now needed a new paint job.
I pocketed my phone, balanced the baby on my hip, and let out a slow breath while I counted to ten before ushering Theo to the nursery with me.
Motherhood wasn’t always this hectic, I reminded myself. Today was only chaotic because JC was out of town working on one of his investment projects, and the nanny didn’t work on Sundays. While both my husband and I worked full time, we were really hands-on with our parenting. Sundays and Mondays were our weekends. Neither of us worked on these days, for the most part, and we only brought the nanny in when absolutely necessary. When JC had told me on Saturday that he needed to extend his trip in Chicago for another day, I’d considered calling Ruth to help out but decided against it. I could handle three boys under six on my own for a little while, couldn’t I?
The answer was yes. But it definitely took every last drop of my energy. Even running a summer Friday night shift at The Sky Launch, the night club I co-managed, was easier than this.
“It’s worth it,” I told Braden as I laid him down on the changing table. I even meant it.
Mostly.
It was another two hours before I had the kids clean, fed, and settled enough to look at my phone. I shifted a sleeping Braden off my breast and into a position where I had a hand to use. Then I went to my notifications and opened the email JC had sent earlier.
Besides the tantalizing subject line, all that was inside the message was a website link along with a username and password. I clicked on the link and awkwardly entered the information he’d provided with my free hand―my non-dominant hand, hence the awkward.
I blinked at the bold red headline that popped up: Welcome to The Open Door.

TELL ME EVERYTHING NEW CR BANNER.jpg

“A sizzling, squirming, thought-provoking story of female growth.”

- Caroline Kepnes, New York Times bestselling author

Tell Me Everything, a provocative do-not-miss novel from author Amy Hatvany, is coming November 5th and we have the gorgeous cover!

AmyHatvany_TellMeEverything_FinalEbook.jpg
A happily married couple. A dance with a stranger at a bar.
One night—one seemingly insignificant choice—can change everything.
Jessica and Jake Snyder love each other, and their life together. Successful in their chosen careers, they reside in the picturesque, though at times stifling, Seattle suburb of Queens Ridge as they parent teenagers Ella and Tucker.
As so often happens in marriage, their romantic life falls casualty to busy schedules and repetitive routine, until one night, a stranger asks Jessica to dance. On a whim, Jake urges her to say yes, saying that he wants to watch this other man touch her, something that surprises Jessica by arousing her like never before. A door opens for them then, into a realm of exploration neither of them knew existed.
They create rules to protect their marriage, and are thrilled when their relationship is strengthened and enriched by deeper levels of communication and trust brought about by this exciting, but taboo behavior. That is, until Jessica keeps a secret from Jake and embarks on a tryst with an intriguing man from her past, who, when she tries to end things between them, decides to seek revenge.
What happens after that will threaten to destroy their world—and them.
A juicy and insightful look into the shifting definition of modern marriage and the limits placed upon female sexuality, TELL ME EVERYTHING will make you question everything you thought you knew about what constitutes marital bliss, and keep you turning pages into the night.

Amy Hatvany graduated with a degree in Sociology only to discover most sociologists are unemployed. Soon followed a variety of jobs – some of which she loved, like decorating wedding cakes; others which she merely tolerated, like receptionist. In 1998, Amy finally decided to sell her car, quit her job, and take a chance on her passion: writing books. Her background in sociology inspires and informs much of her work as she tackles timely and controversial issues in her novels including mental illness, domestic abuse, and alcoholism. She is published by Washington Square Press/Atria Books, and has been both a Target Book Club and Costco Pennie's Pick. Amy spends most of her time today with her kids and her second and final husband, Stephan. (Seriously, if this one doesn’t work out, she’s done, kaput, no more husbands!) When Amy’s not with friends or family, she is most likely reading, cooking, or zoning out on certain reality television shows. She eagerly awaits Bravo auditions for the cast of “Top Author.” (“Quick Edit” instead of “Quick Fire” Challenge? C’mon, producers! That’s gripping television!)

REVIEW: Broken Knight by LJ Shen

Our Review:
Shel: I'm fairly certain that everything you've seen about Broken Knight involves words like "emotional", "intense" or texts with crying emojis and honestly that's all true. The story of Luna and Knight is one of misunderstandings, miscommunications or lack of communication, and heartbreak...again and again and again.

Court: It is. That is so like life when we all think we know best, and don't effectively communicate with the people we love. There are so many things about this novel that will frustrate the crap out of you, but these characters that LJ Shen has given us are beautifully broken, and I could not get enough. This book is brilliant, and a continuation in this world that I didn't know I needed. I heal from these types of books, which might sound crazy, but in all of the hard things to read this one is beautiful in how unexpected it was for me. I expected it to be a great book, but what we got was so much more brilliant than that...and I hate that I can't explicitly tell you why! You just have to read it!

Shel: Why in the world would anyone willingly put themselves through that? Because these characters are exactly the ones you want to end up together. They're perfect for each other. Totally sweet on and to each other (how Knight dotes on her in the beginning and how she takes care of him at the end) and you know that the ending is going to make those tears all go away ...true story!

Court: Yes. I love that we learn of their journey from when they are small children, and how we can take this book as a standalone for their time period, but also bring things that we had questions about from the original series about their parents. Knight is a complicated fellow, but I love that Luna was given the room to grow and find herself in a way that we would've never anticipated. Both of their character growth was painful, but gosh isn't that what being 17 and 18 years old is about? This nailed it, and I am so in love with this series and story.

Shel: Plus, in the reading of their story you get more about their parents and their peers and let me tell you--those stories are quite compelling! Court: It is. I died and was brought back to life by this story. Emotionally slayed doesn't even begin to cover it, but I have no regrets (and nor should you) for reading it.

Shel: I'm eager to get swept away in another #tothole love story and anything else LJ Shen wants to deliver to us--her novels are the perfect escape. Court: Their lives are definitely larger than life, but this is a series I never want to end. I love living in these characters world, and learning more! Just gimme, gimme, gimme all the #tothole things! LJ Shen is a phenomenal writer, and we're so glad we found her!

Not all love stories are written the same way. Ours had torn chapters, missing paragraphs, and a bittersweet ending.

Luna Rexroth is everyone’s favorite wallflower.

Sweet.
Caring.
Charitable.
Quiet.
Fake.
Underneath the meek, tomboy exterior everyone loves (yet pities) is a girl who knows exactly what, and who, she wants—namely, the boy from the treehouse who taught her how to curse in sign language.
Who taught her how to laugh.
To live.
To love.
Knight Cole is everyone’s favorite football hero.
Gorgeous.
Athletic.
Rugged.
Popular.
Liar.

This daredevil hell-raiser could knock you up with his gaze alone, but he only has eyes for the girl across the street: Luna.

But Luna is not who she used to be. She doesn’t need his protection anymore.
When life throws a curveball at All Saints’ golden boy, he’s forced to realize not all knights are heroes.

Sometimes, the greatest love stories flourish in tragedy.
