 OUR REVIEW:

Shel: You know we love us some Kylie Scott, and when she's got a character loosely affiliated with the Stage Dive crew?! Sign us up! Court: Amen, I love this world and am happy to keep right on living in it. I hope that we keep getting appearance of the guys and their wonderful women, even if just a little bit!

Shel: In this novella, we get to know Mae, a plus sized model who has a psycho stalker, and Ziggy, her new bodyguard--who happens to be hot af. There's so much to love about this quick read but I especially loved Mae's view of everything. She's funny and sweet and so completely normal--other than her job. Her mental drooling over Ziggy was hilarious and relatable and her coping through all things baking and chocolate was perfect. His stoicism and then his complete capitulation to his feelings for her was sweet and fun to read. Court: I could not put this down. I wish it was longer, but alas, we got a really full story in this novella and I enjoyed it very much. Mae and her friends, and her stylists are fire, and I really enjoyed how the characters developed and where the story went. This was a fun and quick read, but Kylie Scott keeps us coming back for more...especially with every little Mal appearance we get!

Shel: If you're looking for a quick read and a fun distraction, this novella is the perfect read for you.

Excerpt:

I’d had bodyguards before. But only for events like fashion week or a big shoot. Just for a limited amount of time. My contract with Ziggy, however, was open ended, dependent on the heart in the box situation. Once he’d grilled me about what the police were doing (investigating my entire life), my routine (I don’t really have one. It’s consumed by work), and my calendar for the next few days (I’d freed up time to finish unpacking and then back to work on my lingerie line), he drove me to the gym. There was one I used a couple of times in the apartment building, but I generally do better with some active encouragement and guidance.
Guess Ziggy approved of my Land Rover because he gave it another one of those almost-smiles. I, however, continued to receive the full professional cold front face. This was definitely going to take some getting used to.
“Who’s your shadow?” asked Kwana, my awesome trainer.
I paused mid-lunge, my breath coming hard and fast. “My bodyguard, Ziggy. You like him?”
“He’s pretty. Don’t stop, keep moving.”
“Yeah, yeah.”
“You don’t usually have one of them around. Have you been getting hassled or something?”
Kwana stood with her arms crossed, all lean muscles beneath brown skin. Since we were in an open area at the end of the main part of the gym, Ziggy waited over by the wall, just out of earshot. He stood with his arms loose at his side, his gaze constantly wandering a circuit from me—around the room, over to the exits, and back again. Always on alert.
“More a precaution than anything,” I said.
No matter how much I liked Kwana, no one outside my inner circle needed to know about the incident. The fewer people who found out about the gross cow heart and knife the better.
There’d been no further news from the police. Though it was never likely they’d track down a suspect and charge that person the next day.
Case closed, hooray!

REVIEW: Closer by Mary Elizabeth

Title: Closer
Series: Closer #1
Author: Mary Elizabeth
Genre: Contemporary Romance/New Adult
 Release Date: December 6, 2016

OUR REVIEW:

Shel: This was our first Mary Elizabeth novel and holy angst-fest, Court! Teller and Ella, our dual narrators, are a hot mess. The entirety of the novel is devoted to their dysfunctional love affair. It's, at times, hard to take and be patient with and at other times so easily recognizable from many of the relationships I've either been in or seen around me-- their love is an almost painful love that can be hard to understand it if you haven't experienced something like it. Court: Exactly, we haven't read *too many* of these types of love affairs - but like every hot mess out there we can't look away. And that isn't to say that the writing isn't really good, because it is - but I recognize a likeness of my somewhat cray cray self in Ella...and once you meet her I think you'll be consoling poor Shel and my husband. But, they are dysfunctional, but like a moth to a flame I am obsessed with hit and read it in lightning speed late, late the other night.
Shel: As this is book 1 of a trilogy, I feel that there's still so much more I need to know about how these two tick--why are they the way that they are?. Why are they so destructive with their love? How will they learn to have a healthy love...or will they ever be able to have a healthy love? I'm sure the next two books will be hard on Teller, Ella, and their friends and family (and us!) and it'll be interesting to see how Mary Elizabeth resolves their story. Court: I agree. We have a great set up for something wonderful between the two of them...and I think the dysfunction stays high just because their thoughts and actions and just the action in general moves at warp speed. I am very excited to see where things go from here, and how, like Shel said, and when they finally figure it all out and can just be at peace. We definitely have a while to go. On the other hand, I have to say that Mary Elizabeth's storytelling is really in depth...she draws you in with each scene and makes it so you cannot stop reading, and must know what happens next!
Shel: If you're looking for an easy romance, this is definitely not the series for you. Teller and Ella fight for and against every ounce of love given and taken in this novel. It's an unconventional story structure, writing style, and love story--one that is off putting and yet one you find that you're so curious about what they'll do next that you not only read it to the end, you eagerly look for the next books in the series. Court: I am dying for the next book! Dying! I don't know what on earth is coming our way in the next two but wouldn't mind if y'all went on the ride with us!

Blurb

Gabriella Mason is damaged.

Teller Reddy is wrecked.

Misery loves company, and that’s exactly what Ella gets the afternoon her path crosses with Teller’s: the misunderstood premed student who instantly becomes her lifeline when she moves to Los Angeles, an attempt at escaping her heartbreaking past.

In the beginning, Lonely and Defensive complete each other. But in the end, their relationship is like broken glass—cutthroat and jagged.

Calling it off before they kill each other, Ella and Teller decide to “just be friends” despite the intensity that binds them together. It’s a delicate foundation rocked by tragedy, effectively destroying the illusion they’ve so carefully built.

Unable to deny what’s between them any longer, this is what happens when wrecked and damaged collide and close is still not close enough.

Author Bio

Mary Elizabeth is an up and coming author who finds words in chaos, writing stories about the skeletons hanging in your closets.

Known as The Realist, Mary was born and raised in Southern California. She is a wife, mother of four beautiful children, and dog tamer to one enthusiastic Pit Bull and a prissy Chihuahua. She's a hairstylist by day but contemporary fiction, new adult author by night. Mary can often be found finger twirling her hair and chewing on a stick of licorice while writing and rewriting a sentence over and over until it's perfect. She discovered her talent for tale-telling accidentally, but literature is in her chokehold. And she's not letting go until every story is told.
