Blurb Once upon a time, six children stumbled upon a wild place hidden deep in the moors, shrouded by secrets and fog. There we played a game among the roses and the thorns that would change us forever, that would follow us the rest of our lives. A game that ended with a hard kiss in the rain and tattered flower petals fluttering from above…
And twelve years later, we’re back.
The heir. The dreamer. The priest. The genius. The socialite. The saint.
I’m not going to dream of a forgotten place covered in thorns every night. I won’t be enchanted by Thornchapel and its glossy, glamorous people. I’m not going to fall in love or have my heart torn in two.
I’m not telling the truth.
Because as this place slowly tightens its coil of secrets and thorns around us, as we uncover the knotted mysteries that grow here, the six of us begin to unravel into filthy, holy pleasure and pain. Fulfilling the promise we once made as children in those whispering ruins, and awakening a fate that will either anoint us or leave us in ashes…

REVIEW: Space by Penny Reid

SPACE_BT.jpg

Space, the second book in the all-new Laws of Physics Trilogy from Wall Street Journal and New York Times bestselling author Penny Reid, is available now!

LOP_SPACE.jpg

REVIEW:

In the Motion edition of I LOVE EVERYTHING PENNY REID WRITES I was dying at the end--Motion killed me dead and every time I thought about Space I got super excited to see what would happen next. So when Space hit my Kindle I used every extra minute of my day to read and only put it down when I absolutely had to, only to pick it up as soon as I could. Rather than savor it and prolong my enjoyment I greedily devoured it and am now eagerly anticipating what will happen with Abram and Mona next.

Abram and Mona were put through an emotional wringer in Space (as was I!) and while lots of things were smoothed over, forgiven, and explained, I have a feeling that Penny Reid has plans for them that involve more emotional distress for us all before it’s all said and done. It’s okay. I’m here for it—all of it—because it’s just so dang good. All the characters are interesting and fun to imagine and read. I’m excited to see what other plot points will be wrapped up and if any new ones will emerge. And I know ..can predict ..that when I finish the last book I will be incredibly sad that the series is over and also looking forward to the very next thing she publishes. Until then, I have a month to ponder what will happen next and be excited about the torture/smart writing/swoons and fun romance the final book may inflict.

SYNOPSIS:
One week.
Private cabin.
Famous physicist.
Still an unrepentant slacker.
What’s the worst that could happen?
Mona’s meticulously planned allotment of relaxation is thrown into chaos by the unscheduled appearance of her older brother’s band of friends, including the one person she'd hoped to never face again. Abram still makes her feel entirely too much, which is one of the reasons she disappeared after their one week together. But now, trapped on a mountain of snow and things unspoken, Mona will have to find a way to coexist with Abram, chaos and all.
Laws of Physics is the second trilogy in the Hypothesis series; Laws of Physics parts 1 (MOTION) & 2 (SPACE) end with a cliffhanger.

Excerpt:

“Hi—hello,” she said, stepping forward but not out of the way, drawing my attention. She was still staring at me, her face still pale, but her eyes had turned searching instead of stunned. “I—” She stopped herself, swallowing, her gaze dropping to the front of my coat, a cute little frown furrowing her eyebrows. In the next moment, she was pulling off the glove of her right hand. Abruptly, she shoved the ungloved fingers toward me, returning her eyes to mine. “I’m Mona.” I suppressed my disbelief at her small action before it could break my outward mask of calm. I wasn’t calm. Just to be clear, I was the opposite of calm. The fact that she was introducing herself to me now meant that she thought I was too stupid to figure out her lies over the last two-and-a-half-fucking years. She was arguably one of the smartest people in the world, after all. To her, people like me must seem like housebroken pets. So it shouldn’t have surprised me. But it did. The tension and tightness around my ribs reappeared, squeezing uncomfortably. Dropping my attention to her bare hand, I pressed my lips into a tighter line, dismissing the way my pulse jumped at the sight of her wrist, the olive tone of her skin under the yellow string lights overhead. Glaring at her outstretched offering, I considered telling her to go to hell. I considered it, but I wouldn’t. I didn’t trust myself to speak, that was reason number one. The other reason was harder to explain, or use as a justification, or admit to myself. Staring at her hand, I braced against a sudden flare of hunger. She might consider me a lower life-form, but that didn’t change the fact that I wanted to touch her. I wanted to touch her more than I wanted to tell her to go to hell, and that was fucking pitiful. But there it was. Acting on the compulsion, I lifted my right hand and tugged off the ski glove, sliding my warm palm against her much colder one. Her hand felt good in my hand, the right weight, the right size, the right texture, and I inhaled freezing air. Mona also seemed to suck in a slow but expansive breath as our hands touched, held. This brought my eyes back to hers in time to see her lashes flutter. Pink colored her previously pale cheeks. The sound of the wailing wind, the sting of the air and frost momentarily melted away, leaving just her, her soft skin warming against mine, her beautiful face filling my vision. So beautiful. She really was. She was stunning. I hated that she was still so beautiful to me.

REVIEW: Surprise, Baby by Lex Martin and Leslie McAdam

Title: Surprise, Baby!
Standalone Companion Novel to All About the D
Authors: Lex Martin & Leslie McAdam
Genre: Romantic Comedy/Adult Contemporary
Release Date: March 12, 2019

OUR REVIEW:

Surprise, Baby hits allll my sweet spots, which explains why I read it in a single day (and ignored errands, cleaning, and ungraded papers). You've got humor, sexiest of sexy times, sweet romance, and a surprise baby!! If you read the first novel in this stand alone series, you'll remember Drew and you'll probably think of him as I did--totally hilarious and totally irresponsible. What a difference a year or two makes--he's cleaned up his act ... and is still totally hilarious. Equally hilarious and a hot mess (outside of her work life) is Kendall (you may remember her, as well, from book 1). Together these two and their shenanigans made my day--their hate to lust to friendship to love had me cracking up laughing or swooning at their genuine affection and care they had for each other.

I wish I had more books to read in this series; they're the perfect way to spend a lazy Mardi Gras day off (or weekend...or any day that you need a romcom to escape into).

Blurb

There’s a fine line between lust and hate.

I don’t care that Drew Merritt spent the last year transforming himself from grungy slob to sexy playboy. With messy, dirty blond hair and gorgeous eyes, his looks aren’t the problem.

His mouth is.

And the stupid things that come out of it.

But after an emergency strands us together, and he does his damnedest to take care of me…

Let’s just say there’s one thing we don’t clash on.

And it doesn’t involve talking.

I’ve despised Drew since I met him years ago. One weekend can’t change us that much, can it?

Spoiler alert: It doesn’t.

Except he left me a little keepsake.

And in nine months, I’ll have a surprise for Portland’s most notorious player.

Leslie McAdam

Leslie McAdam is a California girl who loves romance, Little Dude, and well-defined abs. She lives in a drafty old farmhouse on a small orange tree farm in Southern California with her husband and two small children. REVIEW: The Girl in the Painting by Max Monroe

TGITP- RB banner.jpg

Love is blind, but fate sees everything

The Girl in the Painting, an all-new standalone romance from New York Times bestselling author Max Monroe, is available now!

the girl in the painting_FINALCOVER.jpg

OUR REVIEW:

Pretty sure when I first got hooked on Max Monroe books I showed up for the humor and stayed for the sweet romance. These days, with these writers trying new things, I’m here for it all—sweet romance, laugh out loud scenes, and in The Girl in the Painting, something I’d never read before: a character who starts out like Ansel—a character who’s lost his vision. While the back story to his vision loss and how exactly his transplant works is not the focal point of this novel, it was such a unique start to a novel. These writers asked me to think about something I don’t think about very often and while I can’t speak to the accuracy of what they described, it definitely made me think about Ansel and what he was struggling with. But, as I said, this part of the novel was more about getting us to the next part than anything else. We fast forward a few years and get to meet Indy—the girl who seems to be the girl in the painting. As their stories entwine, them being together is obviously inescapable—despite an obvious obstacle—and the one question, which I pretty much guessed early on, remaining is how is he painting her like this when he never knew her before? You’ll get answers and a sweet epilogue too.

If you’ve come to Max Monroe for the funny, stay for the sweet romance. We think you’ll be glad you did.

Ansel Bray, an artist known around the world for his tragic hiatus from the canvas.
Ansel Bray, a broody, handsome man not known by me, at all.
Long dark hair, blue eyes, and dimpled cheeks. I’ve never met her, but her image is imprinted in my mind. An angel muse who inspires me to paint again.
There is something about him. Something that spurs a need to be as close to him as possible. A need to find out why.
There is something about her. Something that draws me in. Something that urges me to find out what her presence means.
Why does the girl in his painting look so much like me?
Who is this girl, and why can I see her so vividly?
I shouldn’t fall in love with him.
I shouldn’t fall in love at all.
But fate plays her hand.
But fate has other plans.
The lines of my life will blur.
The needs of my heart will change.
What a beautiful mess we’ve made.

REVIEW: Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I've yet to read a book by Taylor Jenkins Reid that doesn't completely capture and hold my attention so when I had a chance to sit down and read Daisy Jones & The Six I was hoping for the same reading experience. SPOILER ALERT: This reading experience was awesome. I sat down with this novel at the beginning of my weekend and let it steal hours away from my non-reading life so that I could read it.

I'm going to be honest with you, as always dear reader, and tell you that this isn't your typical contemporary romance or even general fiction work--though if you've read any of TJR's other works, you know that she doesn't write the typical. This particular novel is written like an interview so you get to know the characters and their stories through a question and answer format. You won't find exposition and the usual story arc but instead what you'll find is that you're picturing these characters and trying to match them up with a band that you're familiar with. I won't tell you which famous band I pictured but I'll tell you that the image I had was strong and it enhanced the way I visualized all of this going down.

So while this isn't really a traditional read, it was completely fascinating. I found myself really loving and rooting for some characters, exasperated with others, and completely amused by all of them at one time or another. I enjoyed feeling like I was a fly on the wall as these characters lived out their hugest dreams and struggled through their worst nightmares. And I definitely loved all the musician references and imagining what it would've been like to be a young musician living the lives they were living.

I enjoyed was the raw truths, the poetic lyrics, and the sometimes shallow and sometimes profound insights that these characters revealed. Strangely, or not, many of these things resonated with me and lingered in my head and I especially loved the lingering nostalgia and bittersweetness that seemed to hang around long after I was finished reading. I recently saw that Amazon picked this novel up to be a short series and I'm thrilled to see  what they do with it.

BUY IT on AMAZON.

Synopsis:
A gripping novel about the whirlwind rise of an iconic 1970s rock group and their beautiful lead singer, revealing the mystery behind their infamous breakup.

“I devoured Daisy Jones & The Six in a day, falling head over heels for it. Daisy and the band captured my heart.”—Reese Witherspoon (Reese’s Book Club x Hello Sunshine book pick)
Everyone knows DAISY JONES & THE SIX, but nobody knows the reason behind their split at the absolute height of their popularity . . . until now.
Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock ’n’ roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.

Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.

Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the seventies. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with Daisy Jones & The Six, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice.
