Divorced. Single dad. Traded to a losing squad.
Cheated on, betrayed, exposed.
My perfect life blew up in my face and I'm still picking up the pieces.
The last thing I need is her.
A wildflower. A storm. A woman I can't resist.
Lotus DuPree is a kick to my gut and a wrench in my plans
from the moment our eyes meet.
I promised myself I wouldn't trust a woman again,
but I've never wanted anyone the way I want Lo.
She's not the plan I made, but she's the risk I have to take.
A warrior. A baller. The one they call Gladiator.
Kenan Ross charged into my life smelling all good, looking even better and snatching my breath from the moment we met.
The last thing I need is him.
I’m working on me. Facing my pain and conquering my demons.
I've seen what trusting a man gets you.
Don't. Have. Time. For. This.
But he just keeps coming for me.
Keeps knocking down my defenses and stealing my excuses
one by one.
He never gives up, and now...I'm not sure I want him to.

BRED
A coming-of-age romance inspired by Great Expectations
By Ginger Scott

My life was irrevocably changed the moment I stepped foot inside Elena Alderman’s grand front doors. A lifeless tomb on the edge of Chicago’s South Side, the Alderman home sat in one of the city’s oldest and wealthiest neighborhoods, and Elena Alderman was the queen.

She was also mad.

Not the kind of madness that’s readily apparent. No, her psychopathy was far more surgical—more…insidious. She was surrounded by beautiful things—most notably her grand piano and her adopted son, Henry.

I fell in love with both.

My gift blossomed when my fingers touched her black and white keys. But my life began when I became haunted by the boy. Henry Alderman was a handsome blend of arrogance and seduction, and as we grew up together, I found it more and more impossible to separate him from my thoughts. I envied his life. I imagined how my name—Lily—would look with his. I became his closest friend…and more. I gave him my kiss, locked away his secrets, and loved him even when it was hard to.

But we were just a game. Elena Alderman made the rules. And when she decided to change them, she broke everything.

Almost.

OUR REVIEW:

Shel: Ughhhh. I’m totally helpless against anything and everything Sierra Simone. You wanna know my kryptonite? It’s her writing and, honestly, who she is as a person. I admire what she stands for and I’m enamored with the worlds and characters she creates. So from this gushiness you might be able to...maybe...perhaps? ascertain my happiness at the new series she’s publishing—and the sweet agony it’ll be to wait for every book to be released. You might especially appreciate that now that I’ve finished book one, A Lesson in Thorns, I’m in that severe book hangover stage I tend to fall into when I finish one of her novels (which means I instantly texted Court who was on vacation and demanded she start reading it NOW!!). Court: Which I did immediately! And for all that is holy, you all...must read this book immediately. I had no idea really what I was getting myself into, but now I am deep into book hangover mode as well...a finished book that I was trying to savor but could not get enough of...and whew. It was a wild ride that sucked us in from the very first page.

Shel: This Thornchapel Series feels so very British —broody and moor-y and dark and gothic. The cast of characters—Poe, Auden, Saint, Becket, Rebecca, Delphine, their families and the Thornchapel Estate(because these last two things seem to always add to the atmosphere or looming in the background)— are interestingly entwined. From their childhood “wedding” to their current post-college years that have all brought them back to where they first met, they each have stories that ache with melancholy and longing until they’re all with each other which is when they all seem to finally be able to breathe. Court: We were dropped into their world in the perfect place though. We don't know a lot, but neither do they...so we get some mingling from the past and with 6 sort of main characters that all have to much to bring to the table we have a lot of meat to get into and a lot of webs to unravel. I am entranced by Thornchapel estate as well...and with all of their individual issues. Poe is a great character's head to be in a lot of the time, though...and she is cataloguing what seems to be the library for all libraries and that is amazing too.

Shel: The growing tension between all of these characters, sexual and otherwise, was pitch perfect. I found myself devouring every word because I couldn’t stop myself and I needed, so badly, to see how the tension would break. And break it did..it was magnificent in its symbolism and naughtiness and the deep level in which all the characters seemed to connect.  Court: Sierra Simone is so talented that a only a kiss really turned things up a notch. Then we got more. and more. and more. and wow. I am so in love with this story and mirror what Shelley has said. Her characters are deep, and every scene has so much meaning.

Shel: Other things I enjoyed—Sierra Simone has been really great in making her stories sex positive, kinky af, and she continues to diversify the race and sizes of her characters. All wins in my book. Court: Agreed. They all are so different but have so much that brings them together. I was interested to see how some things would go when certain details were revealed...and I am more enthralled than ever.  Shel: Let me also add that I loved the literary references (Auden, anyone), the mythology references, the name Becket (a reference to Thomas Becket maybe?), and co-mingling of Christian and pagan rituals--so smart! And for those of you who read the New Camelot series, you'll recognize a name too (don't you love it when authors throw those fun things in?!!) Again, win, win, win!!!

Shel: Speaking of winning, I'm so excited for all of you who get to experience this novel for the first time. And I promise not to spoil anything in my enthusiasm for this new series--I’ll leave the discovery of these characters, their stories and connections for you because you’re going to have so much pleasure in getting to know this group all on your own. That being said, I will say that I’m intrigued about what’s happened in the past, what secrets will be revealed, and how it will all be resolved. I’m looking forward to seeing if Sierra Simone keeps Poe as her main narrator with only certain chapters  giving us insight into other characters and their struggles. I’m also wondering if the Markham name has anything to do with the Markhams from the Ivy Series. So many questions and thoughts...
Court: All of these things, y'all. I love Auden and I love Saint and I love Becket (I love the girls too, but these boys are tortured y'all...) and the girls have their stuff...but they are so much more open and honest and aware of who they are. The scenes are beautifully written, and I had such an enjoyable time reading this book. An erotic breakfast club, if you will, in a very beautiful place figuring out their past and their issues.

Shel: Finally, the ending was the absolute perfect cliffhanger because it..just was. Read it. You’ll see.
If you’re a Sierra Simone fan you are going to LOVE this book. If you’re not a fan, what the hell?! Court: YES! What Shelley said x 1000. I REALLY enjoyed and inhaled this book...and well...I cannot wait for the next one to come out!

Blurb Once upon a time, six children stumbled upon a wild place hidden deep in the moors, shrouded by secrets and fog. There we played a game among the roses and the thorns that would change us forever, that would follow us the rest of our lives. A game that ended with a hard kiss in the rain and tattered flower petals fluttering from above…
And twelve years later, we’re back.
The heir. The dreamer. The priest. The genius. The socialite. The saint.
I’m not going to dream of a forgotten place covered in thorns every night. I won’t be enchanted by Thornchapel and its glossy, glamorous people. I’m not going to fall in love or have my heart torn in two.
I’m not telling the truth.
Because as this place slowly tightens its coil of secrets and thorns around us, as we uncover the knotted mysteries that grow here, the six of us begin to unravel into filthy, holy pleasure and pain. Fulfilling the promise we once made as children in those whispering ruins, and awakening a fate that will either anoint us or leave us in ashes…

REVIEW: Violent Delights by Jessica Hawkins

Title: Violent Delights
Series: White Monarch #1
Author: Jessica Hawkins
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: March 19, 2019

OUR REVIEW:

Court: This book just slayed me.  We love Jessica Hawkins so I will put that out there first, but she also has this amazing ability to write a book in a way that is captivating but holds all of the cards and releases them one at a teeny tiny time. I honestly don’t know how she does it. Shel: Preach, Court, PREACH. Jessica Hawkins has become an easy 1-click for us and exactly for the reasons listed--she captivates us from the very beginning and has us dying for more at the end.

Court: The story of Natalia and Diego and Cristiano is a complicated one that goes back to when they were kids. We also have some unreliable narrators that are part of the cartel so you can imagine it’s hard to discern who is telling the truth and how often they do. I tried to savor the story as much as possible, but in other words I ended up reading it every available second...at dinner. At the Grand Ole Opry intermission. The bathroom. Everywhere, until I ended up with a finished book in less than 12 hours! Shel: Lol. And that's why I love Court. She's just like me--reading at every available interval of time! And with a story like Natalia, Diego and Cristiano, you can't blame her. There's this interesting dynamic between them all and as you go on, the things you think you know suddenly you begin to question...and will continue to question until the very last word. BRING ON JUNE, y'all--I need book 2!

Court: I thought that Natalia’s innocence and naivety hopefully sets her up to be a character of strength in the next books...And...well, I’ll just say it’s bittersweet that the next one comes out in June which isn’t that long but I’m desperate and this one could have went on for a thousand pages and I wouldn’t have been sad! (As usual!) I really enjoyed this one and am so glad to have read it! Shel: I liked Natalia's juxtaposition of innocence and strength and I look forward to her being less naive and more worldly and even stronger as this series continues. I'm very interested to see what happens when we start reading in June!

Blurb

“She is mine.” Three words from two different men.
A life, future, and love I don’t get to choose.

In the de la Rosa family, old grudges run deeper than loyalty, and betrayal is a three-letter word: war. But this feud isn’t between enemies. It’s between brothers. And I’m the prize.

I was born a princess among criminals. An untouchable among thieves. Heiress to a life others have killed for, and one I'd do anything to escape. I vowed not to leave without Diego, my first love and best friend, but if his ruthless brother has his way, I won’t leave at all. Cristiano de la Rosa is a man as big and bold as his legend. Once upon a time, he was our cartel’s best soldier . . . until he became my family’s worst enemy.

A man like Cristiano will bend fate to his will to get what he wants. Even if it means dragging me to hell—and tearing me from his brother's arms.

REVIEW: Space by Penny Reid

SPACE_BT.jpg

Space, the second book in the all-new Laws of Physics Trilogy from Wall Street Journal and New York Times bestselling author Penny Reid, is available now!

LOP_SPACE.jpg

REVIEW:

In the Motion edition of I LOVE EVERYTHING PENNY REID WRITES I was dying at the end--Motion killed me dead and every time I thought about Space I got super excited to see what would happen next. So when Space hit my Kindle I used every extra minute of my day to read and only put it down when I absolutely had to, only to pick it up as soon as I could. Rather than savor it and prolong my enjoyment I greedily devoured it and am now eagerly anticipating what will happen with Abram and Mona next.

Abram and Mona were put through an emotional wringer in Space (as was I!) and while lots of things were smoothed over, forgiven, and explained, I have a feeling that Penny Reid has plans for them that involve more emotional distress for us all before it’s all said and done. It’s okay. I’m here for it—all of it—because it’s just so dang good. All the characters are interesting and fun to imagine and read. I’m excited to see what other plot points will be wrapped up and if any new ones will emerge. And I know ..can predict ..that when I finish the last book I will be incredibly sad that the series is over and also looking forward to the very next thing she publishes. Until then, I have a month to ponder what will happen next and be excited about the torture/smart writing/swoons and fun romance the final book may inflict.

SYNOPSIS:
One week.
Private cabin.
Famous physicist.
Still an unrepentant slacker.
What’s the worst that could happen?
Mona’s meticulously planned allotment of relaxation is thrown into chaos by the unscheduled appearance of her older brother’s band of friends, including the one person she'd hoped to never face again. Abram still makes her feel entirely too much, which is one of the reasons she disappeared after their one week together. But now, trapped on a mountain of snow and things unspoken, Mona will have to find a way to coexist with Abram, chaos and all.
Laws of Physics is the second trilogy in the Hypothesis series; Laws of Physics parts 1 (MOTION) & 2 (SPACE) end with a cliffhanger.

Excerpt:

“Hi—hello,” she said, stepping forward but not out of the way, drawing my attention. She was still staring at me, her face still pale, but her eyes had turned searching instead of stunned. “I—” She stopped herself, swallowing, her gaze dropping to the front of my coat, a cute little frown furrowing her eyebrows. In the next moment, she was pulling off the glove of her right hand. Abruptly, she shoved the ungloved fingers toward me, returning her eyes to mine. “I’m Mona.” I suppressed my disbelief at her small action before it could break my outward mask of calm. I wasn’t calm. Just to be clear, I was the opposite of calm. The fact that she was introducing herself to me now meant that she thought I was too stupid to figure out her lies over the last two-and-a-half-fucking years. She was arguably one of the smartest people in the world, after all. To her, people like me must seem like housebroken pets. So it shouldn’t have surprised me. But it did. The tension and tightness around my ribs reappeared, squeezing uncomfortably. Dropping my attention to her bare hand, I pressed my lips into a tighter line, dismissing the way my pulse jumped at the sight of her wrist, the olive tone of her skin under the yellow string lights overhead. Glaring at her outstretched offering, I considered telling her to go to hell. I considered it, but I wouldn’t. I didn’t trust myself to speak, that was reason number one. The other reason was harder to explain, or use as a justification, or admit to myself. Staring at her hand, I braced against a sudden flare of hunger. She might consider me a lower life-form, but that didn’t change the fact that I wanted to touch her. I wanted to touch her more than I wanted to tell her to go to hell, and that was fucking pitiful. But there it was. Acting on the compulsion, I lifted my right hand and tugged off the ski glove, sliding my warm palm against her much colder one. Her hand felt good in my hand, the right weight, the right size, the right texture, and I inhaled freezing air. Mona also seemed to suck in a slow but expansive breath as our hands touched, held. This brought my eyes back to hers in time to see her lashes flutter. Pink colored her previously pale cheeks. The sound of the wailing wind, the sting of the air and frost momentarily melted away, leaving just her, her soft skin warming against mine, her beautiful face filling my vision. So beautiful. She really was. She was stunning. I hated that she was still so beautiful to me.

If you read the first novel in this stand alone series, you'll remember Drew and you'll probably think of him as I did--totally hilarious and totally irresponsible. What a difference a year or two makes--he's cleaned up his act ... and is still totally hilarious. Equally hilarious and a hot mess (outside of her work life) is Kendall (you may remember her, as well, from book 1). Together these two and their shenanigans made my day--their hate to lust to friendship to love had me cracking up laughing or swooning at their genuine affection and care they had for each other.

I wish I had more books to read in this series; they're the perfect way to spend a lazy Mardi Gras day off (or weekend...or any day that you need a romcom to escape into).

Blurb

There’s a fine line between lust and hate.

I don’t care that Drew Merritt spent the last year transforming himself from grungy slob to sexy playboy. With messy, dirty blond hair and gorgeous eyes, his looks aren’t the problem.

His mouth is.

And the stupid things that come out of it.

But after an emergency strands us together, and he does his damnedest to take care of me…

Let’s just say there’s one thing we don’t clash on.

And it doesn’t involve talking.

I’ve despised Drew since I met him years ago. One weekend can’t change us that much, can it?

Spoiler alert: It doesn’t.

Except he left me a little keepsake.

And in nine months, I’ll have a surprise for Portland’s most notorious player.

Lex Martin

Lex writes contemporary romance, the sexy kind with lotsa angst, a whole lotta kissing, and the hot happily ever afters. When she's not writing, she lives a parallel life as an English teacher.

She loves printing black and white photos, listening to music on vinyl, and getting lost in a great book. Bitten by wanderlust, she's  lived all over the country but currently resides in the City of Angels with her husband and twin daughters.

Lex is represented by Kimberly Brower of Brower Literary & Management.

Leslie McAdam

Leslie McAdam is a California girl who loves romance, Little Dude, and well-defined abs. She lives in a drafty old farmhouse on a small orange tree farm in Southern California with her husband and two small children. Leslie always encourages her kids to be themselves - even if it means letting her daughter wear leopard print from head to toe. An avid reader from a young age, she will always trade watching TV for reading a book, unless it's Top Gear. Or football. Leslie is employed by day but spends her nights writing about the men you fantasize about. She's unapologetically sarcastic and notoriously terrible at comma placement.

Always up for a laugh, Leslie tries to see humor in all things. When she's not in the writing cave you'll find her fangirling over Beck, camping with her family, or mixing up oil paints to depict her love of outdoors on canvas.
