REVIEW: The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang

OUR REVIEW:

This book absolutely lives up to all the hype you've seen and I don't say that lightly. As a matter of fact, when I picked up this novel, I was doubtful because I'm cynical and thought it might just be BS but it wasn't, at all. It was the perfect poolside read for me. The romance was sweet and steamy and really just lovely--I loved every single on page moment with Michael and Stella--and every time I think about the way their story developed I just have to smile. I also loved the outside of their romance story of them. I was completely invested in who they were outside of their coupledom and enjoyed reading about their individual stories as much as reading about them together. And I superloved that this novel is an #ownvoices novel and that the author shared a little of her own experiences with autism in the author's note.

You guys, splurge and buy this if you're looking for a novel that's full of all the good feels--you're going to find yourself smiling and laughing and swooning at this couple's romance...and if you're like me, you'll be on the look out for the next thing Helen Hoang writes.

BUY IT HERE.

SYNOPSIS:

"This is such a fun read and it's also quite original and sexy and sensitive."--Roxane Gay, New York Times bestselling author

"Hoang's writing bursts from the page."--Buzzfeed

A heartwarming and refreshing debut novel that proves one thing: there's not enough data in the world to predict what will make your heart tick.

Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases--a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with, and way less experience in the dating department than the average thirty-year-old.

It doesn't help that Stella has Asperger's and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. Her conclusion: she needs lots of practice--with a professional. Which is why she hires escort Michael Phan. The Vietnamese and Swedish stunner can't afford to turn down Stella's offer, and agrees to help her check off all the boxes on her lesson plan--from foreplay to more-than-missionary position...

Before long, Stella not only learns to appreciate his kisses, but crave all of the other things he's making her feel. Their no-nonsense partnership starts making a strange kind of sense. And the pattern that emerges will convince Stella that love is the best kind of logic...

REVIEW: Getting Schooled by Emma Chase

     OUR REVIEW:

Every time I read an Emma Chase novel, I find myself longing for a long backlist of her books. Her novels are such a good blend of romance and humor and total escapist fun; Getting Schooled continues in that tradition. It's probably one of her sweetest romance to date, in my opinion, and features one of my favorite second chance romance plots that I've read in a while. The humor on almost every page had me laughing so hard that I shook furniture and the setting seemed like a place I'd love to live. One of my favorite parts of this romance, if I'm truly being honest, is that Garrett is a teacher (and Callie becomes a substitute). The observations made about teachers and students were hilarious and so true (how did you know, Emma Chase!, about all the inner workings of faculty and students?!).  And I especially loved how much love and respect both Garrett and Callie have for their students and their jobs--of course I'm a high school teacher so I'm biased, but their experiences as teachers really rang true for me.

This steamy, romantic comedy had me laughing, even tearing up at parts, and loving Garrett and Callie's second chance at romance. Loved it!

Head of the class... Garrett Daniels has this whole life thing figured out. The cocky, charismatic former high school star quarterback is an idolized football coach and "cool" teacher in the hometown where he's not just a golden boy — he's platinum. He has good friends, a great house on the lake, and the best damn sidekick a man could ask for: Snoopy, the albino beagle. Then...Callie Carpenter comes home. And knocks him right on his tight end zone. Back to school... Callie has a pretty sweet life herself...on the other side of the country. But circumstances — that she'd prefer to never speak of again — have brought her back home, helping out her parents and substitute teaching at her old high school. Now she's facing bickering, raging hormones, constant gossip, awkward weirdness, and drama galore...and that's just the teachers. Just like old times... When Garrett offers to show his former high school sweetheart the secrets of his winning teacher ways, Callie jumps at the chance - and then has to stop herself from jumping him. Good friends are all they can ever be. Or...these teachers just might end up getting schooled — hard — by love. Includes a special bonus interview with the author! ©2018 Emma Chase (P)2018 Audible Originals, LLC.

High school parking lots are one of the most dangerous places on earth. I don’t have statistics to back that up…but I know it’s true. I pull into the school parking lot Monday morning in my Dad’s giant, newly repaired mint-green Buick, with Back in Black by AC/DC blasting from the speakers. I feel tough, powerful—like I’m driving a tank. I’m a badass teacher—I’ll run you down even if you’re a student—I’ve got twenty-nine more in class just like you. The outfit helps too—leather boots, blue jeans, a starched white blouse and a black leather jacket. It’s my armor. The morning air is cool and crisp today, but I barely feel it. I’m locked and loaded and ready to roll. As I march towards the main entrance, I spot Garrett and Dean and Alison Bellinger outside the doors. They pause when they see me, waiting. “Damn,” Dean chuckles. “Callie’s got her shit-kickers on. Did you dig them out of a mosh pit from 1993?” Garrett crosses his arms. “Somebody’s channeling Michelle Pfiefer in Dangerous Minds.” He looks fantastic. His hair is tousled from the breeze and kisses his brow, and he’s wearing a dark blue sweater that’s snug around his biceps and soft, worn, light blue jeans. I remember his arms around me yesterday on my parent’s porch. The wonder and exhilaration of the moment. Of him. The intensity in his eyes, the desire and possessiveness in the grasp of his hands. The scorching feel of his mouth, his wet talented tongue that made my stomach swirl and my head spin. So much for not complicating things. But I’m not going to play head games with myself or Garrett—we’re too old for that shit. I have feelings for him—I always have—our break-up had nothing to do with either of us not wanting each other desperately. But these aren’t just leftover echoes of a sweet, first love—this is something new. A throbbing, breathless attraction to the amazing man he’s become. I want to be near him. I want to know him, inside and out, all over again. And he feels the same way. Garrett wants this version of me as much as he always did—maybe even more. I heard it in his whispered words and felt it in his kiss. I don’t know if we have a future, if it can go anywhere. We have separate lives on opposite ends of the country. But I’m not going to worry about that—for now, I’m going to take each day as it comes and enjoy every moment we can. Except for now. Now is not the time for enjoying or worrying or relationship building…now is the time for focusing. Now is the time to be ice and steel—don’t smile, don’t waver. “Little fucknutters don’t know who the hell they’re dealing with,” I growl. Allison pumps her fist. “That’s the spirit.” Garrett opens the door for me. “Go get ‘em, Gangster’s Paradise.”
Emma Chase is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the hot and hilarious Tangled series and The Legal Briefs series. Emma lives in New Jersey with her husband, two children and two naughty (but really cute) dogs. She has a long-standing love/hate relationship with caffeine.

REVIEW: Cry Baby by Ginger Scott

We're celebrating the release of CRY BABY by Ginger Scott! One-Click today!

OUR REVIEW:
If you know anything about us, you know that we've reviewed every single Ginger Scott novel. And, if you know that, you know that we've enjoyed every single one. Each novel has something that makes it distinct and yet distinctively Ginger Scott, if that makes sense.

In Cry Baby, Ginger returns to YA fiction and gives us characters we haven't seen before--Riley, a smart, tough, basketball player, and Tristan, a street smart, tough, baller who happens to be be in a gang. Needless to say, the grit factor we've seen in novels like The Hard Count and Memphis is not only present, it's amplified in Cry Baby. It's that gritty atmosphere and their unlikely pairing that initially interested me and then Tristan's seemingly hopeless internal conflict about what he was doing with his life that really had the pages flying. But it's the ending that really got me excited--I don't want to say too much, and I *think* some readers are going to be a little grouchy about it, but I loved it. It felt absolutely real and true to the situations that these characters found themselves in (and, as I told Ginger, I feel like it leaves the door open just a little for maybe a holiday short or a short story for an anthology?!!). All I can say is thank you for honoring those characters, Ginger, and writing an ending that was perfect for them.

Ginger Scott writes teens really well, and this novel once again shows that. The way that Riley and Tristan push and pull against each other, their consuming interest in each other, and the way they interact with their friends and parents reads as accurate and attuned to all things teenager. As a high school teacher this authenticity is important to me and it's what has won her reader loyalty among many of my current and former students--she just gets it right every time.

“Cry Baby is brilliantly written. It's hauntingly beautiful and heartbreaking and will leave you thinking about it for days afterward. Bravo, Ms. Scott. This boy-man stole my heart and I don't want it back.”- L.J. Shen, Bestselling Author

Blurb:
Tristan Lopez is loyal to his brothers. He doesn’t really have a choice, born into a gang that has a chokehold on every kid that roams its streets. He gave his life to them willingly, knowing if he did then one day this kingdom, led by boys drunk with power and ruled by fear, would all be his.

He was loyal through it all. Loyal when prison took his dad away. Loyal when his face was touched by the cold metal of the rival gang’s gun. Loyal even though his mom begged him to run the moment she returned home from rehab.

He thought about becoming someone else. It was hard not to crave the life of a regular 17-year-old. It’s the only reason he stayed in school—to pretend. But he always fell back in line.

Loyal.

Riley Rojas didn’t belong in Tristan’s real world. She should have only been part of the fantasy, one of the many faces he got to pretend with amidst rows of metal chairs and desks and whiteboards with assignments. But there she was, moving boxes from the back of an old pick-up into a house Tristan had shot up on a dare with his friends only a few months before.

Tall enough to look him in the eyes and strong enough to fill his shadow, Riley took up space on his streets, her loud mouth fearless in the face of the gang leaders who terrified everyone else. She pushed Tristan around on the hard court, and she balled better than his friends—better than him

sometimes. She challenged him. She needed him. He liked it. And when her pale blue eyes stared into his, he quit wanting to pretend.

He couldn’t ask her to leave because she’d only dig her heels in deeper. He couldn’t ask because he didn’t want her to go. She was blurring his lines. She was testing his loyalty.

He was falling in love.

And it was going to tear him apart.

The Varlet and the Voyeur by Penny Reid and L.H. Cosway

BANNER-BlogTour.jpg

The Varlet and the Voyeur, an all-new standalone in the USA Today bestselling Rugby Series from Penny Reid and L.H. Cosway is available NOW!

Cover

OUR REVIEW:
The Varlet and the Voyeur is a perfect summer read--it's got the best blend of romance and comedy and smart writing. I picked this one up to kinda just get a feel for it before I went about my day and found that before I knew it my day was over, my errands weren't even started, and I had a perma-grin on my face. The tweets that begin each new chapter, the characters (Josey and Will), and some of the situations they find themselves in had me shaking my head with a smile on my face.

I really liked that this novel was about something I don't think I've ever read about before: voyuerism. I realize that this fictional situation isn't the sole definition of what it means to be a voyeur but I really liked the way it was approached and handled.

I also really enjoyed the characters of Will and Josey. They both had a self awareness and quirkiness that I found to be wonderfully delightful. Their friendship and romance were fun to read, even the bits that had me super anxious, and I couldn't go to bed until I knew exactly how their story ended.

The Varlet and the Voyeur is a definite must read--its smart, funny, interesting, and swoony.

He kept his salacious secret for years. But soon, everyone is going to be reading about it in their morning paper…
THE VARLET (and the VOYEUR)
William Moore is a long way from home. A farm boy from Oklahoma, he’s now the most well-respected member of the Irish rugby team. But appearances are often deceptive, and Will isn’t the clean-cut, all-American good-guy everyone imagines him to be. He’s got a secret, one that will tarnish his reputation forever.
THE VOYEUR (and the VARLET)
Josey Kavanagh is a self-proclaimed mess, but she’s finally get her shi…uh, act together. She’s set her sights on becoming a veterinarian, but there’s one teeny tiny road bump. Her living arrangements are coming to an abrupt end, leaving Josey homeless and in need of a job to pay her way through college.
THE PLAN
What he needs is a companion to keep him on the right path.
What she needs is an apartment with free rent.
Will is convinced Josey will make the perfect companion, since she’s brutally honest and basically ‘just one of the guys.’ Josey is convinced she can ensure Will doesn’t succumb to his voyeuristic proclivities by keeping a scrupulous eye on him.
Except, what happens when the varlet is tempted by the voyeur, and vice-versa?!
Perchance something very, very volatile. And vexing.
The Varlet and the Voyeur is a full-length romantic comedy novel, can be read as a standalone, and is the 4th(and last) book in the USA TODAY bestselling Rugby Series.

*Will*
When I saw how spotless the shared living space was, I allowed my curiosity to get the better of me and peeked my head into her bathroom, Rocky dancing around my feet as I entered the space. The counters were covered in woman-products, but the marble surface and sink were free of water spots, and the glass of the shower had been wiped clean. I glanced at Rocky. He glanced at me. Bemused, I chuckled to myself, about to turn back to the door, and that’s when I spotted it. A dildo. A big, Pyrex dildo. With ridges. In the shower. I froze, blinked, and I stared at it, my brain sluggish. Oddly, I had to remind myself to breathe. Likely because I was . . . I was— I was shocked. I shook myself, tearing my eyes from it and rubbing my chest where an odd kind of pang was spreading mild warmth up my neck. But why was I shocked? Why should I be surprised? Despite my never seeing her that way, Josey was a woman and women have needs. Don’t they? I hadn’t grown up around women—any women. My mother died when she had my youngest brother. My grandmother died before I was born. I had no sisters. We lived on a farm, way out in BFN Oklahoma. Girls—women—and their bodies were sacred lands of the unknown to us Moore boys. Unbidden—completely unbidden—an image of Josey flashed through my mind’s eye. Her full lips parted, her big eyes closed, causing her thick black lashes to catch droplets of water before they dripped over her sharp cheekbones. Her head would be lolled back as shower spray melted bubbles of slippery soap, sliding down her bare skin as they dissolved. Her legs would be parted, and maybe one hand would be braced against the wall of the shower while the other moved in a steady rhythm. Holding that huge, glass dildo. I swallowed a sudden rush of salvia and, unable to help myself, I leaned closer to the sex toy, examining it and comparing its size against my own. I was bigger. But not by much. And for some reason, this realization made me instantly hard. Crap. Of course I knew Josey was a woman, but until this moment, I’d never really thought of her that way. Not even the tampon-mountain drove the point home. Up until this point, she was someone I liked as a person, someone who made me laugh, who was smart and compassionate, someone around whom I felt completely comfortable. A good—no, a great companion. She was still all of those things, except— Except now I’ve pictured her naked.

Jodi Ellen Malpas wrote her debut series, The This Man Trilogy, in secret, worried about what people might think if they knew what her imagination was capable of. She was shocked herself. But she finally found the courage to unleash her creative streak and self-published THIS MAN – the first book of the This Man Trilogy – in October 2012. She took a chance on the story with a hero who soon became one of modern day fictions most prolific alpha male characters. Jesse Ward – also affectionately known as The Lord of The Manor, sparked incredible reactions from women across the globe and catapulted Jodi into the world of women’s fiction. Jodi went on to self-publish the second book in the trilogy, Beneath This Man in Jan 2013, just before Grand Central Publishing, part of the Hachette Book Group, picked up the popular trilogy and the unknown Jodi. The third book of the trilogy, This Man Confessed, took Jodi to the top of the bestsellers lists, earning her the proud title of #1 New York Times Bestselling Author. This Man has since been voted one of the top romance novels of all time. With so much love, enthusiasm and a thirst for her words from her readers, Jodi suddenly wasn’t afraid of her imagination anymore. She went on to write The One Night Trilogy with the delectable and mysterious Miller Hart, and stole the hearts of her readers once again. Her first stand-alone novel, THE PROTECTOR, released in September 2016 and has since been nominated for a Reviewers’ Choice Best Book Award. Jodi’s next stand-alone novel. THE FORBIDDEN, is set for release in August 2017. All seven of her published novels have hit the New York Times best sellers list – as well as the Sunday Times list and various international best seller lists. Her work is now published in over 24 languages across the world. Jodi was born and raised in the Midlands town of Northampton, England, where she lives with her two boys and a beagle. She is a self-professed daydreamer, a mojito addict, is famous for her obsession with Converse, and has a terrible weak spot for Alpha Males. REVIEW: Double Down by Alessandra Torre

Double Down
By Alessandra Torre
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Cover Design: Najla Qamber Designs

Our review:

Shel: Double Down had a big job; the first book in this duet, Even Money, was so good that not only did Double Down need to be just as good, it need to tie up all the loose ends. It did, y'all-- it totally lived up to all the hopes I had for it going in. The varying perspectives--Belle, Dario, Claudia, to name a few--put me inside every situation and thought process, and had me anticipating and yet anxiety filled all at the same time; it was perfect. I was so anxious, at points, that I had to put my kindle down but then I was so damn curious, I had to immediately pick it back up to read more. How would all of this be resolved? How would they get to their HEA? Gahhhh. It was intense and also, sweet, romantic and sexy. Court: I know...I was dying and for some reason I spent a lot of time trying to figure out exactly what was going to happen next. I don't know why because that isn't something I am good at, but I'll just say that it turns out that every guess I had was not what came to pass! Shel is right though...this book had a tough act to follow and I think that it really did a great job.

Shel: Both novels in this duet are impossible to put down. You will devour them and find yourself simultaneously satisfied with how it all ends and still wanting more (to be honest, I can see how there could be one storyline that could be developed at some point in the future and a few characters I'd love to see again) which, to me, is the best thing that can happen when you're reading. Court: I felt that hard when I was done...surely there is MORE. Because we always want more, more, more and are just too greedy when it comes to words...but I was thinking and meant to tell Shel, so I'll say it now...this is the type of series I want to read. I hope that other readers feel this too. There was some internal character angst but I really love when something external drives the plot. Their love story is one that has a lot of parts in it, but I needed that external part to really give me what I needed because I couldn't handle more angst. I loved how the pacing was spot on, and that there I was waiting for the other shoe to drop the entire time (how could I not with that first ending?!) All in all, this is a duet to be devoured, and then join our party of begging Alessandra for more!

BEAUTIFUL HEARTS DUET by Emma Scott: Covers Revealed

BRING DOWN THE STARS - Release Day - JULY 26th
I fell for Connor Drake. I didn’t want to; I fought against it, but I fell in love with him anyway. With his words. With his poetry. With him. The gentleness and beauty of his soul that speaks directly to mine. He writes as if he can feel my heart, hear its cadence and compose the exact right lyrics to accompany every beat and flow. I’m in love with Connor…so why do I feel an inexplicable pull to his best friend, Weston? Grouchy, sullen, brooding Weston Turner, who could cut you down with a look. Fiercely intelligent with a razor sharp wit and acid tongue, he’s the exact opposite of Connor in every way, and yet there’s electricity in the air between us. The thorny barbs Weston wraps around himself can’t keep me away. But the more time I spend with these men, the more tangled and confused my emotions become. When they both sign up for the Army Reserves during a time of increasing strife in the Middle East, I fear I’ll never unravel my own heart that sometimes feels as if it will tear straight down the middle…for both of them. ********** Bring Down the Stars is an emotional, angst-filled novel of unrequited love by bestselling author, Emma Scott, and is inspired by the classic tale, Cyrano de Bergerac. New + REVIEW: On the Edge by C.D. Reiss

ONTHE EDGE RELEASE BANNER.jpg

“This series grips you by the throat and refuses to let go—and you’ll be begging for more the entire time.” — Sierra Simone, USA Today Bestselling Author

OUR REVIEW:
On the Edge picks up right where Rough Edge ended and it pulled me in immediately. I felt like a detective trying to put all the pieces together about Caleb and Damien and Greyson and realizing that I'm still too many pieces short for a picture to emerge. And as much as it pains me to be patient with the telling of this story, and it's painful, I know that the next book will come shortly and that will unruffle my feathers.

I'm sure you'll read a lot about the ending, the various facets of the plot, and the sex scenes from other reviewers--what I find I cannot stop thinking about is about how interesting these characters are. I find myself wondering how anyone could function, and function well, living with what is happening. Perhaps it's more obvious to sympathize for Caden, and I do, but Greyson really has my heart. Because of the way Reiss writes her, I really identified with Greyson's stress and anxiety, and her helplessness. I found myself putting myself in her shoes and just immediately stepping out because it felt so overwhelming--kudos to Reiss for putting me there and making me squirm.

If you haven't started this series yet, you're going to want to.It's fascinating and psychological and compelling.

“In Iraq, I promised you a bed of rose petals.” He grabbed my hand under the table, tightening his grip as if he were falling from a precipice and our connection was the only thing saving him from certain death. “They were beautiful.” “You smell like apples. Roses were wrong.” There was nothing soft about his tone, but his quiet words were for me alone. “I want everything to be right for you.” “Caden, look at me.” I caught his gaze and held it. He was confident. Arrogant. Sure he had a place in the world. And under that was the man who needed me to be that place. “If I could…” He smiled and shook his head at a silly thought he wanted to dismiss but couldn’t—a contradiction in keeping with the whole man I married. “If I could write my love in the sky, it wouldn’t be big enough. I’d run out of room. I’d fall out of the air trying to say it all.” He was saying it all. Every day. And he was falling out of the sky to do it. on-the-edge-books-w-sidelook-text.jpg

About the Author
CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn't pick up she's at the well hauling buckets. Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master's degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels. She's frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn't ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood. If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine. _21A6258_pp-fb

REVIEW: More Than Words by Mia Sheridan

OUR REVIEW:
How is it that More Than Words is the first novel that I've read by Mia Sheridan?! I probably be ashamed of myself but I'm really just excited because this means I have tons of her books to read.

I picked up this novel with the intention of reading a few pages, maybe a chapter, and then running a few errands and picking it back up. That did not happen. I started reading and then I couldn't stop. I was curious about the story of Jessie and Callen --from their first meeting to their fateful next-- and I found myself enamored by their story. I also liked the setting (I've always wanted to visit and now I'm yearning to visit Paris) and the various subplots (her job, his job, her family history, his family history). All in all, this novel was a really good read with some interesting sections on fate and dealing with love and loss that really resonated with me. I know that new and old fans alike will devour this novel and find themselves daydreaming about romantic French countryside locations.

Synopsis:

No one lays open the heart and soul quite like New York Times bestselling author Mia Sheridan in this new standalone contemporary romance.

The moment she met Callen Hayes, eleven-year-old Jessica Creswell knew he was a broken prince. Her prince. They became each other's refuge, a safe and magical place far from their troubled lives. Until the day Callen kissed her--Jessica's first real, dreamy kiss--and then disappeared from her life without a word.

Years later, everyone knows who Callen Hayes is. Famous composer. Infamous bad boy. What no one knows is that Callen's music is now locked deep inside, trapped behind his own inner demons. It's only when he withdraws to France to drink his way through the darkness that Callen stumbles into the one person who makes the music return. Jessica. His Jessie. And she still tastes of fresh, sweet innocence . . . even as she sets his blood on fire.

But they don't belong in each other's worlds anymore. There are too many mistakes. Too many secrets. Too many lies. All they have is that instinctive longing, that need--and something that looks dangerously like love.
