We are so thrilled to reveal the cover for GETTING SCHOOLED by Emma Chase, a brand new standalone releasing on audible February 27th and everywhere else June 26th!

Head of the class... Garrett Daniels has this whole life thing figured out. The cocky, charismatic former high school star quarterback is an idolized football coach and "cool" teacher in the hometown where he's not just a golden boy — he's platinum. He has good friends, a great house on the lake, and the best damn sidekick a man could ask for: Snoopy, the albino beagle. Then...Callie Carpenter comes home. And knocks him right on his tight end zone. Back to school... Callie has a pretty sweet life herself...on the other side of the country. But circumstances — that she'd prefer to never speak of again — have brought her back home, helping out her parents and substitute teaching at her old high school. Now she's facing bickering, raging hormones, constant gossip, awkward weirdness, and drama galore...and that's just the teachers. Just like old times... When Garrett offers to show his former high school sweetheart the secrets of his winning teacher ways, Callie jumps at the chance - and then has to stop herself from jumping him. Good friends are all they can ever be. Or...these teachers just might end up getting schooled — hard — by love. REVIEW + Giveaway + EXCERPT: Escape by Jay Crownover

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Jay Crownover returns with the third standalone title in her Getaway series, ESCAPE. Check out the review below, and pick up your copy today!

OUR REVIEW:

Shel: Escape picked up right where Shelter left off--with Lane and Brynn. We were immediately plunged into the moment that sent Lane running to California....and Brynn not too far behind him. And from that first chapter the truth about how they perceived each other and things between each other became clear--she didn't want to be his obligation or his wounded bird and he wanted to protect her because he loved her so much. Somewhere their lines got crossed in a wrong way and the hurt and unspoken feelings just seemed to multiply, until Brynn woman-ed up. (SIDE NOTE: I really like that Brynn was the logical, clear headed one. She was strong and resilient and did not do one thing she didn't want to do). Court: Lane and Brynn were very likable characters. AND I felt a lot of angst for their story line. Though, I might need to mention that Jay does keep us readers near and dear to her heart as she twists and turns through this story. Things got intense in a hurry in ways that I did not expect and can I say LOVED IT! External conflicts with all of this internal conflicts and I was hooked. It did not take long to read this book!

Shel: Just as they were clearing the air, they found themselves in a horrific situation that detoured them off their original adventure and created a way for them to work together and reconnect. Cue Bauer. Is it weird to say that I loved his storyline? I absolutely hated what had to happen for him to appear, but I loved how it ended (and some of the characters that came out to play because of him). I also loved that his appearance helped solidify everything between Lane and Brynn and gave them an external conflict that brought them together rather than tear them apart. Court: I loved his story line too. It made the story that much more interesting and I wanted it to go on and on and on and on so that we could get more of how their friendship develops and what exactly was going to happen next between them all. I was nervous the entire time. I also enjoyed some appearances from a character of another series by Jay we love!!!

Shel: The last third of the novel just flew by--so many events and changes for these characters had the pages flipping fast. And then? Then! Then, that last page and I'm like WHAT THE HELL. Please let there be a continuation to that ending, Jay. PLEASE!! Court: Amen! There is much more fun to be had in this world and I for one cannot freaking wait!

Shel: Fun, modern cowboy romance series--not sure I'd ever put those words together but they just work with this series.  Court: These Wyoming boys sure give our idea of a southern gentleman a run for their money don't they? Yes, m'am!

About ESCAPE:

Everything inside of him is screaming that he needs to run, he needs to go, he needs to escape.

Lane Warner is used to being overshadowed and overlooked.

After all, he’s the youngest brother and the most laid back one in the family. He’s the one known for going with the flow and not making waves, even when things seem to be at their worst.
Very few things in life have had the ability to rile Lane up and get under his skin. At the top of that list is his childhood friend Brynn Fox…no…Brynn Warner. The fact that they share a last name was the one thing that has the power to light him up and spin him out of control like no other. There was no calm, cool and collected when it comes to all the reasons why Brynn had to become part of his family.
It’s slowly killing him to keep wanting what he can’t have, so Lane sees only one way to stop himself from doing something they’ll both regret…he has to leave. Everything inside of her is calling out to find him, to follow, to bring him home.
Brynn Warner is used to being stuck between a rock and a hard place.
After all, she’s the daughter of an unrepentant gold-digger who never once blinked at being the cause of her daughter’s pain and suffering.
Very few things in her life have ever brought happiness and a sense of security. At the very top of that list is Lane Warner. She has unwaveringly loved the youngest Warner since the first minute she laid eyes on him. He was everything Brynn ever wanted and everything she knew she could never have.
Sometimes the right choice is the one that hurts the most and Brynn’s had to make a few that felt like they might be the end of her. When Lane takes off, one thing is clear, the only choice Brynn has is to go after him.

She’s going to bring her wayward cowboy home….whatever it takes.

Escape is a standalone novel, the third book in the Getaway series, which features the hardheaded and brokenhearted Warner brothers and the women who dare to love them. These boys are very good at putting the wild in wilderness.

 EXCERPT:

Brynn
For the first time in days, it felt like my world was set back to rights.
Everything was crooked and off center the minute Lane walked out of the house in Wyoming and disappeared. I couldn’t think straight. Every step I took was wobbly and unsteady. From the moment I opened my eyes, to the second I fell into a fitful sleep at night, it was like I saw things through a grainy black and white filter. There was no color in any of my days when Lane was gone. There was no joy or light. There was only a massive void where I knew I should be able to feel my heart hurting and my soul suffering, the way they always did when it came to the youngest Warner, but when he left there was nothing.
I thought I knew what it felt like to have everything inside of me freeze and shatter. When word came that Lane had been shot while trying to protect his niece from a madman hell-bent on destroying everything that was important to Sutton, I was sure I would never be able to breathe or feel again. That icy pain, that frigid fear had nothing on the numbness that followed when Lane walked out the door seconds after Jack dropped to his knee. At that moment, I knew I was supposed to focus on the man asking me to share his life with him, the one who wanted me for me, and not because he was driven by some chivalrous need to save me from my messed up family and tumultuous home life.
But I hadn’t been focused on Jack. All I could see was the resignation and regret flashing through Lane’s pale blue eyes. We were both reliving the moment another man had asked me to marry him. Only that time, Lane hadn’t been able to escape the outcome. He’d been reminded of it for years, every waking moment when I’d technically held the title of his stepmom. I was something neither one of us could get away from no matter how hard we tried. It was amazing how much one little yes could change everything.
Now that he was standing in front of me, looking much thinner and more haggard than he had even when he came home from the hospital, I finally felt like I could inhale again. Everything that was fuzzy and blurred around the edges pulled back into sharp focus. I could look at the sky behind his tousled head and see that it was the same stormy blue as his eyes. I could also focus on the lines of tension and stress radiating out of the corners of those eyes and the bruised, dark hollows underneath them. Without him, nothing felt like it mattered. There was no home. There was no peace of mind. There was no safety and security.
When he was close, the littlest things felt hugely important and essential. The twitch of his lips into a wry grin spread warmth that chased away the emptiness for the first time in what felt like forever. The heat radiating off of his long, lean body made my heart kick back to life. When his arms wrapped around me for a seriously overdue hug, I finally felt alive. Finally felt something other than the echoing loneliness and hollowness that consumed me the minute he turned his back on me. Even with Daye trapped between us, I still felt a tingle at every single spot where his body touched mine.
“It’s so good to see you.” I meant it with every fiber of my being. Looking at him, even as worn and as drawn as he appeared, settled something deep inside of me.

REVIEW: Living Out Loud by Staci Hart

LIVING OUT LOUD, the next in Staci Hart's Austen Series, is LIVE! I adored this modern love story inspired by Jane Austen's Sense & Sensibility. Everything about this book had me smiling and swooning! Hart takes us back to the world of Wasted Words and gives us a love story you will not soon forget!

OUR REVIEW:

Shel: I'm thinking Staci Hart can do anything. yes?
Romcom? Yes
Ansgsty romance? Yep.
Gods and goddesses? Yep
Erotica? Yep.

Court: Yes, Staci Hart can definitely do anything! She keeps it original, and her covers suck us in every. single. time with their originality and the shots are beautiful but can I be weird for a second and say the fonts just do it for me too? I'm a font nerd. What can I say. But...while she lays on the angst, I know that she'll find a way for us to make it through okay and that is why I love coming back to her time and time again!

Shel: And now? Now we have a sweet and funny nod to Sense and Sensibility in Living Out Loud. The characters of Annie and Greg were a mix of modern love and Austen love. I could see them in 2018 NYC even as I heard them in 1811 England-- there was a gentility and musicality to their dialogue that just seemed to straddle both times perfectly. Their romance was a whirlwind, with the pacing of things between them moving swiftly towards a HEA-- though not without villainy and confusion and yearning along the way. Court: I really enjoyed Living Out Loud in that I am always in awe of people who take on literary classics and then make them their own. It really is an art form, because I really feel like it takes a lot of planning and respect and even more thought to put it all together to make something new and beautiful for us to enjoy. Staci Hart does that very, very well.

Shel: I not only enjoyed the sweet and light romance of Annie and Greg but I'm insanely curious about Ellie and Ward (and really want their mom to find someone). I love it when secondary characters are as interesting as the primary ones, without taking anything away from the main story and I'm eager to see where the next book takes me next. Court: Amen! Friends who make us intrigued for more in this world are the best ever. I need and want more and more and more and can I say that I'm needy for more Staci Hart stories? We will wait as patiently as we can to see what she does next, but we for sure can plan on it to be original and engaging and really give us that escape we are looking for!

When Annie Daschle arrives in New York City, the only thing she can control is her list. Not her father’s death or the loss of her home. Not the hole in her heart or the defective valve that’s dictated so much of her life. But she can put pen to paper to make a list of all the ways she can live out loud, just like her dad would have wanted. See the city from the top of the Empire State Building: Check. Eat hot dogs on the steps of The Met: Check. Stand in the middle of Times Square: Check. Get a job at Wasted Words: Check. Two things not on her list: Greg Brandon and Will Bailey. And just like that, she finds herself caught in the middle of something she can’t find her way out of, with no clear answers and no rules. List or no list, she realizes she can’t control anything at all, not even her heart. Not the decisions it makes, and not the moment it stops. *Standalone contemporary romance Inspired by Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility.*

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life -- a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can't forget that. She's also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She's been a wife, though she's certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She's also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she's been drinking whiskey. When she's not writing, she's reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

REVIEW + GIVEAWAY: Wildcat by Max Monroe

OUR REVIEW:

With only one other Max Monroe novel under our belts, I think it's fair to say we're newbies to their novels. And with this second novel read, I can firmly say that I'm a fan.

Wildcat is the perfect antidote to the gloomy, cold, grey day--it's light and funny and our main characters, Catharine and Quinn, are so dang sweet that you can't help but fall in love with them both. Seriously. I just loved them both. Catharine is delightfully awkward and confident and Quinn has the kindest heart and does the swooniest things...and they both say the most hilarious things (I was laughing so much that my family kept looking at me--always a good sign!).

Even with all the fun and sweet, Max Monroe managed to throw in a conflict that took Quinn (and me) by surprise --which added a whole layer of depth that was unexpected and perfect. Add to all of this the interesting secondary characters and the promise of their stories to come (please let Denver have a story!!), and I now have another set of authors I'll be one clicking from now on.

Fans of Max Monroe will love Wildcat with its humor and romance and steamy scenes and for those who are new to them, you're in for a treat!

SYNOPSIS:

Blurb:
Wildcat: a football formation in which the ball is snapped, not to the quarterback, but to another player lined up in the quarterback position.

Wild, Cat: a beautiful woman from the sky, who hooked me against the rails, and has me on the ropes. Sweet like honey, with a hint of sass burning behind her pretty brown eyes, she took over my heart without warning.

I’m Quinn Bailey, quarterback for the New York Mavericks.
Sports analysts predicted I’d break records and take my team all the way.

But no one predicted this.

And just like the other team, I never saw it coming.

Disclaimer:
Things this book is:
  • Romantic Comedy
  • #1 in the Mavericks Tackle Love Series
  • Can be read as a complete standalone.
Things it isn’t:
  • Paranormal: The only thing magical is inside Quinn Bailey’s pants.
  • Boring: Pssh, please. Max Monroe doesn’t do boring.
  • Short: Prior to reading, prepare yourself for one huge, long, thick…book.

Disclaimer: The authors cannot be held liable for any smiles that are cracked while reading this book, as well as, any of the following side effects that may occur: Uncontrollable laughter, chronic swooning, and an addiction to Quinn Bailey that may require an admission into the *Max Monroe Rehab Facility.

Disclaimer for the disclaimer: *Rehab facility does not exist, but incessant re-reading of this book will most likely be unavoidable. Once you play with Quinn Bailey, you won’t want to play with anyone else.

Maybe it was all over the first time he saw me, and he would’ve found another way. Probably—if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that Shade always gets what he wants, and apparently he wanted me. Right from the first.

About the 1001 Dark Nights Bundle Authors: Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorize and she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen’s Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning. Nothing’s changed. Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she’s blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched). Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up. And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Carrie Ann Ryan never thought she’d be a writer. Not really. No, she loved math and science and even went on to graduate school in chemistry. Yes, she read as a kid and devoured teen fiction and Harry Potter, but it wasn’t until someone handed her a romance book in her late teens that she realized that there was something out there just for her. When another author suggested she use the voices in her head for good and not evil, The Redwood Pack and all her other stories were born. Carrie Ann is a bestselling author of over twenty novels and novellas and has so much more on her mind (and on her spreadsheets *grins*) that she isn’t planning on giving up her dream anytime soon.
New York Times bestselling author K. Bromberg writes contemporary novels that contain a mixture of sweet, emotional, a whole lot of sexy, and a little bit of real. She likes to write strong heroines, and damaged heroes who we love to hate and hate to love. She’s a mixture of most of her female characters: sassy, intelligent, stubborn, reserved, outgoing, driven, emotional, strong, and wears her heart on her sleeve. All of which she displays daily with her husband and three children where they live in Southern California. On a whim, K. Bromberg decided to try her hand at this writing thing. Since then she has written The Driven Series (Driven, Fueled, Crashed, Raced, Aced), the standalone Driven Novels (Slow Burn, Sweet Ache, Hard Beat, and Down Shift), and a novella (UnRaveled).

Joanna Wylde started her writing career in journalism, working in two daily newspapers as both a reporter and editor. Her career has included many different jobs, from managing a homeless shelter to running her own freelance writing business, where she took on projects ranging from fundraising to ghostwriting for academics. During 2012 she got her first Kindle reader as a gift and discovered the indie writing revolution taking place online. Not long afterward she started cutting back her client list to work on Reaper’s Property, her breakout book. It was published in January 2013, marking the beginning of a new career writing fiction. Joanna lives in the mountains of northern Idaho with her family.

Her love of good storytelling led her to earn a degree in Media Communications. With her journalistic background, writing has always been at the forefront, and her love of romance propelled her career as an author. REVIEW: Midnight Blue by L.J. Shen

SBPR-BT-BANNER.jpg

Midnight Blue, an all-new sexy standalone from LJ Shen is available NOW!

OUR REVIEW:

Shel: LJ Shen + rock stars?
Ummmmm, yes. Always.
Right? Right.

Court: Absolutely right!

Shel: She's already a one click for us, but this? This seemed too good to be true. Court: I was very excited!

Shel: So we jumped in with two feet.

Shel: First up--Indie.
I immediately liked her. She's quirky, tenacious, and willing to do anything to help her family. The more I got to know her, the more I liked her sass and the more of her story came out, the more I understood what drove her and just felt for her. As much as I enjoyed her character, though, she felt like a canvas built specifically as a conduit for Alex. For me, this was really his story. So let's take a look at him, shall we?

Court: Yes and no. I liked her as a strong female character (don't point out how that is wrong at first...) because even though she does give in to him quite a bit...she really develops her backbone and stands her ground on certain things here and there that really made me like her and be proud of her. It maybe hurt my heart, sometimes, but she was a really great character overall. She's sassy, she doesn't have an agenda and is just a genuine character to read. I do agree that the story is built in Alex's world so much that he is an unreliable narrator and directs things a certain way that he doesn't see the world as it is really is either.

Shel: Truth: I hated Alex Winslow for the longest time. Gosh that dude was such a wanker. Truly. He was very self absorbed so I don't know when it happened, or how, but he slid into my good graces stealthily (and somehow I ended up liking him, even as I shook my head at him) and eventually, I adored him. While his antics and spite was frustrating, the more he explained it, the more I understood it, and even though I didn't always like his dickish ways, I could see why he felt the need to be that way.

Court: He is definitely a man of layers. I thank L.J. so much for giving us his point of view. Because he acknowledges every step of the way that he knows the way he is is wrong, but he doesn't stop it because he doesn't want to. He doesn't sugar coat things (too much) even to himself, so he definitely doesn't pretend to others. As each layer was peeled back, and he realizes that he has to decide if he'll keep letting people treat him with kid gloves or not...he really comes into his own and stole our hearts...like we kind of figured he would.

Shel: Together, Indie and Alex were like fire and ice and they steamed (so corny, right? sorry not sorry). Their push and pull was entertaining and at times emotional and I couldn't stop reading until I saw how it ended. Court: Hahaha. I really enjoyed late night writing sessions in the hallways...that is when he really felt like a antihero we could love...and I loved how she wrote those scenes, and the marker and just gah, it was great.

Shel: Kudos to LJ Shen --I already enjoy her novels and characters but I especially like how she changes things up. This novel was different from her Sinners of Saint series --the content, the way she wrote her characters and voiced them, and I like that I know I'm going to get an interesting read that'll keep me reading all night long. Court: YES! From the writing perspective was incredible. I had a great time escaping reality and reading this book, and that is really my favorite kind. I find her alpha characters to be fascinating, and I hope we get another story from this group of boys!

It should have been easy.
I needed the money. He needed a babysitter to keep him from snorting himself to death.
I was cherry-picked especially for him. Responsible. Optimistic. Warm. Innocent.
The worst part is that I should have known better.
Alex Winslow. British rock star. Serial heartbreaker. Casanova with whiskey eyes.
“Don’t get near the devil in a leather jacket. He’ll chew you up and spit you out.”
Sounds familiar? That’s because it was a headline in a tabloid the second time he got arrested.
Guess what? I didn’t listen.
I signed the contract.
World tour. Three months. Four Continents. One hundred shows.
My name is Indigo Bellamy, and I sold my soul to a tattooed god.
Problem was, my soul wasn’t enough for Alex Winslow. He ended up taking my body, too.
Then he took my heart.
Then he took my all.
Excerpt:
Nat’s words came back and haunted me like a bad haircut from the eighties. An irrational need to check the goods took over me. It wasn’t like he minded. According to the rumors, his dick had seen more cameras than Kendall Jenner. Slowly—so painfully slowly—my eyes drifted down his sinewy body. I just wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Whatever I had in mind, though, didn’t come close to the real thing. Thick, long but not atrocious. With thin veins running through its length. “Nice view?” he groaned, tucking his junk back into his briefs. His profile was glorious. Strong jaw, pouty lips, eyes like sex… My eyes snapped up when I realized he was talking to me. “I wasn’t…” “Looking? Yes, you were. Next time take a picture. It lasts longer.” He rolled his zipper upward and flushed the toilet with the toe of his boot. He turned around and squirted soap into his palm, washing his hands almost violently—rubbing between each finger and scratching his knuckles like he wanted to shed his own skin. When he was done, he looked around for a towel. I cleared my throat, scrambling to regain my wits. “Longer than the glimpse or longer than your performance?” Casually—so unbearably casually—he wiped his wet hands over my purple dress. I gasped, moving sideways. It looked like he was about to open the door and get out, but before I had the chance to yell at him for using me as a human towel, he slammed me against the wall, bracing both his arms above my head and pinning me to my spot. I let out a shriek of surprise at the sudden proximity. Alex Winslow is touching me. Willingly, my surprisingly pitiful brain squealed. Heat rolled off his body, making my back arch and my breath catch in my throat. “Let’s make one thing clear—I could fuck you to a point of numbness without even breaking a sweat if I wanted to. Now, careful, New Girl. If you don’t keep your distance from me, I think I just might.” MidnightBlue-AN

Blurb:

My mom always said it was just something about the way he moved.
The same swagger Archie Valentine wore in the ring when he took his opponents down followed him like a halo everywhere he went. But make no mistake about it—he was no angel. He was like a drug. My mother was his addict.

I never understood it…how love could make you blind and convince you to drink the poison. Not until I met Memphis Delaney.

At first, it was the familiar form. He’s a fighter, built like a god from the past, the kind of man the universe doesn’t make anymore. His eyes hide a story, and every time I’m in his presence I want to keep reading him until I get to the end. And then…there’s the way he moves. His boxing is violent but beautiful, and his body is a seductive weapon. When he’s in the ring, he wears the stare of a man committed to the battle until his very last breath.

He could end me; turn me into her. Too much of him will leave me as a shadow, and I’ve lost so much of myself already.

But I have discipline. It came the hard way. Lessons learned, scars left behind, and trust stripped away from life.

I will breathe his air, but I won’t fall for a man like him. The only boxer who’s ever going to break my heart is the one who gave me my name.

EXCERPT:
“Come here,” he says, calling me with a finger.

I wait a second before giving in, letting my arms fall to my sides as I take the few steps from where I am to where he is. His hands wrap around my biceps as soon as I’m near enough and I breathe in fast, just once. His eyes widen a little.

“You’re stronger than you look,” he smirks.

My gaze is held by his when he speaks. He holds it hostage and when I start to look away, his hands slide down to my wrists and he shakes them lightly until I look at him again. His head tilts, and he waits until I get it.

I’m stronger than I look.
“Thank you,” I say, pulling my lip in tight, so afraid I’m not. I’m stubborn for certain. I’m hardened and jaded. I’m not sure if any of that makes me strong.

My muscles bend to Memphis’s will as he threads his fingers through my right ones and lifts my arm, his other hand holding my elbow into my side. He lets go of my fingers and wraps his palm over my knuckles forming a fist and then moves my entire arm forward slowly, stopping when my body lunges with it.

“Here. You lose everything…right here,” he says, stopping my fist where it is then placing the tips of his fingers on my hips.

Memphis’s eyes are intent on where his hand rests at my waist, and he pauses to take a breath, his tongue pinched by his teeth, his lips twitching up at the corners, his eyes blinking fast—all in a second.

I think about kissing him again right now.

“Your weight is already spent, and you haven’t even made impact with something yet. Think about it,” he says, eyes flitting up to mine.

I shake my head a little from the brief stare and silence we share.

“Okay,” I say, following his lead as he brings my arm back and steps behind me.

“You hit me hard, but that was without everything you have behind it. Imagine,” he begins, adjusting his hold on me, his right hand sliding down my arm and covering my hand, feet straddling one of mine from behind, his chest against my back, his breath at my neck and a thousand beads of nerves dotting my skin.

“You’re here,” he says, his voice low and right at my ear.

My eyes flutter when his left hand runs down the side of my body to my hip, and my breath hitches when he grips it more forcefully.

“Your opponent is standing right there. Do you see him?”

I nod.

“Yes,” I say, my voice barely audible.

“He’s cocking,” he says, and I giggle at the word while his nose moves closer to my skin, tickling against my ear. “You’re such a child.”

I clear my throat and wriggle my hips and roll my shoulders, all under his touch.

“You’re right, I’m sorry,” I say, still smiling.

A short breath escapes him in laughter.

“He’s about to swing, okay?” he says, coaxing me to focus.

“Trust me.” His voice falls to a whisper, and my eyes fall closed.

Memphis drives my body, the space between us gone so much that I am lying against him while standing. His hand brings mine up, tucking it close to our bodies. His fingers splay on my thigh, and my leg feels strong. He leans with me, our bodies in sync as we twist to the left, our right shoulders stretching backward, necks rolling until we’re nearly back where we started.

“His balance is off,” he says at my neck. There are no areas of my body that aren’t affected by the vibration of his voice. “You have him. He’s yours. You have balance. His is gone. This is where you win.”

His hand holds my left side still, and his right hand brings me back to swing with a tighter form than I had before. He takes me through the motion once slowly, almost like we’re just part of some intimate ballet performance, then he brings my fist back in and tucks his chin into the side of my neck.

“Again,” he says, this time leading me through the motion faster as his hand slides from its hold on my hip to my diaphragm.

“Breathe out,” he says, and I do slowly at first, but with each swing we repeat, the motion is faster.

My air escapes with my thrust, my body something mechanical now, parts working in unison until I’m able to do it all on my own.

“Keep going,” Memphis says as he steps away. My eyes flit open, and I imagine everything that has ever hurt me. I see their faces—my parents, Enoch, the angry crowds at trials, reporters.

Memphis picks up one of the pads and steps closer as I swing, bending down to hand lift one of my abandoned gloves, eventually holding his palm out for me to pause.

“Put it on, and I want you to hit me now…not like before. Hit me with what you know. Hit me with what you feel, but always there is balance. You can’t give that away. It’s not theirs to have.”

My eyes lock on his as he slides the glove over my knuckles and I form a raw fist with my other hand. He takes two small steps back and readies himself before nodding.

I clear my lungs and consider his words and everything he just led my body through. I was so strong. I’m stronger than I think I am.

My feet shift to find the perfect fit against the mat, and I bring my hands in, fists raised and ready.

“He’s going to swing now,” Memphis says, and I react just as he taught me.

I dodge. The motion so swift and natural I barely remember doing it before my legs steady themselves, my middle twists and my arm swings forward, fist landing in the same spot as it did before only this time my body doesn’t stumble. Memphis does. Inches, but there is reaction to my action.

“Ha,” I breathe out in disbelief. My eyes lift from the fist-shaped dent in the pad to Memphis, and my lips part in awe.

“Yeah,” he says, glancing around to the front of the pad. “You did that by yourself.”

Giddiness takes over my face, my mouth stretching wide with parted lips. Memphis lets the pad fall again, and the physical proof from my force disappears as the padding evens out. It was there, though. I fought back, and left a mark. More than seeing it, I felt it. I still feel it.

“I want to do that again,” I say, blinking as my vision slides from the pad to Memphis’s proud smile.

“Baby steps, Champ. Let me show you a few drills, and then maybe you can punch me one more time before we’re done,” he says, chuckling.

“I wasn’t hitting you,” I say, handing him the glove.

He holds it in both of his hands before bending down to pick up the other glove, pairing them together. His gaze hits mine.

“I know who you were hitting.” Silence settles in for a long second. I don’t have to respond; Memphis doesn’t expect it.

COVER REVEAL: In Harmony by Emma Scott

Blurb:

The root of all madness is an unbearable truth…

At seventeen, Willow Holloway’s life was torn apart. The happy, driven girl is gone, and she is left wracked by post-traumatic stress her body remembers even if she does not. When her father suddenly uproots the family from their posh penthouse in New York City to the tiny town of Harmony, Indiana, Willow becomes more untethered and lost under the weight of her secret. On a whim, she auditions for a part in the community theater’s production of Hamlet and unexpectedly wins the role of Ophelia—the girl who is undone by madness, and her love of Hamlet…

Isaac Pierce is from the ‘wrong side of the tracks.’ The town bad boy. Girls pine for his attention and guys are in awe of him. That he’s an acting prodigy only adds to his charisma. Isaac utterly disappears into his characters; the stage is the only place he feels safe from his own traumatic home life. He wants nothing more than to escape to Broadway or Hollywood, and leave Harmony behind for good.

No one can play Hamlet but Isaac, and when the director pairs him with Willow in acting class, they clash again and again—neither willing to open their hearts to anyone. But clashing leads to breaking, breaking leads to the spilling of terrible secrets, and soon Isaac and Willow find Shakespeare’s words mirroring their lives. When they are cruelly torn apart, neither know how this play will end—with madness and heartache? Or healing, love, and the discovery of who they are truly meant to be.

In Harmony is a standalone NEW ADULT love story, and is intended for readers 18 and up. PLEASE NOTE, this book contains sensitive material such as physical abuse, and the aftermath of sexual assault (off the page). Reader discretion is advised.
