REVIEW: Down By Contact by Santino Hassell

OUR REVIEW:

Down By Contact is the best mix of enemies to lovers, funny as hell banter, football, and sweet romance. I'm loving this series and wishing for more (I feel like Rocky has a story to tell, right everyone?!) and the chemistry and clash of personalities between Simeon and Adrian had me smiling at their antics and turning pages as quickly as I could.

I hope Santino  Hassell is having as much fun writing this as I'm having reading it. He builds and breaks the tension with the perfect touch and the way he writes the inner monologues are both insightful and pitch perfect for each character. Hassell seems to know exactly when to push the plot forward and when to let us spend time in the moment just as he has a good feel for how much to insert about the secondary characters (loved seeing some of my favorites from the last book!).

I know it's not realistic to expect any of Santino Hassell's series ongoing forever but I can't help it. He creates worlds and characters that are interesting to escape to and hard to leave. I am eager to see what he writes next. Until then, I have a few novels on his backlist that I cannot wait to get into.

SYNOPSIS:

Two rival football players begin a game with higher stakes than the Super Bowl in this steamy romance from the author of Illegal Contact.
Simeon Boudreaux, the New York Barons’ golden-armed quarterback, is blessed with irresistible New Orleans charm and a face to melt your mama’s heart. He’s universally adored by fans and the media. Coming out as gay in solidarity with his teammate hasn’t harmed his reputation in the least—except for some social media taunting from rival linebacker Adrián Bravo.

Though they were once teammates, Adrián views Simeon as a traitor and the number-one name on the New Jersey Predators’ shit list. When animosity between the two NFL players reaches a boiling point on the field, culminating in a dirty fist fight, they’re both benched for six games and sentenced to joint community service teaching sullen, Brooklyn teens how to play ball.

At first, they can barely stand to be in the same room, but running the camp forces them to shape up. With no choice but to work together, Simeon realizes Adrián is more than his alpha-jerk persona, and Adrián begins to question why he’s always had such strong feelings for the gorgeous QB…

REVIEW: True by Ella Frank

SBPRBanner-TRUE-RB-2

TRUE, the final book in The Temptation Series by Ella Frank and the highly anticipated wedding between Logan Mitchell and Tate Morrison is available now!

OUR REVIEW:

After reading Tate, I had a feeling I knew where we'd start with True but I had no idea what would happen next. I had some guesses (almost all of them wrong) but  I most definitely was not prepared for how emotional I'd feel at the end of this novel (as  I'm usually a hateful shrew).

For me, this novel was a series of special moments: the opening scene was exactly as I'd hoped! And then Thanksgiving happened and it was hilarious. And the Christmas party at work?!?! Wowwweeee I can't wait until we see how the result of all of THAT plays out. I mean, WUT!! And then, cue the waterworks on Christmas Eve and Christmas night.  Gahhhhh. For real. But the final scenes were the ones that had me brushing away my leaking eyes. The sum of all the moments is one of great love and respect and care--not just between the characters but to the characters, from Ella Frank. This series has shown book after book how much she adores these two men and it's her love for them that comes through the page and helps us feel the same. As sad as I am to see this series come to an end, I have a feeling we'll see glimpses of these two in other books (or go back to the very beginning and start it all over again).

All in all, True surpassed any expectations I had and has me so excited for the next series.

TRUE-FINAL

Synopsis:

True - adjective: That which is accurate or exact.
I dare you to try.
I think you’re my truth.
Terrify me.
Marry me.
Marry me.
Marry me...
Four years ago, Logan Mitchell walked into Tate’s life and challenged him to see it differently.
He dared Tate to try a kiss, when normally he wouldn’t have.
He begged him to take a chance, when he probably shouldn’t have.
But most importantly, he asked Tate to trust that he would love him, and he did. From that moment on, Tate realized exactly what his life had been missing—Logan.
Happily-ever-afters come in many different forms. But for Tate Morrison, there’s only one ending he wants. The one where the guy marries the guy and true love conquers all.
Now all he has to do is tell Logan.
Join Logan and Tate as they finally realize what the rest of us knew all along. That they belong together for better or worse—always.

Excerpt:

LOVE. IT’S FUNNY how one four-letter word can bring on such an onslaught of emotions. Happiness, desire, anger, even fear, Tate Morrison thought, as he sat at the tiny table in the empty bar of the Lynley Winery and tried to calm his erratic heartbeat. It could make those who were the most honest with their emotions run scared, while at the same time bring forth a determination in the most unlikely of people. That was something he had discovered ten minutes ago back in their suite when Logan had stood before him naked and uttered, “Just tell me how you want me, Tate. I’m yours.” That was when he’d run. Tate had practically tripped over his feet in his hurry to be free of the suddenly suffocating confines of that bathroom. And now, as he sat alone replaying Logan’s words, he stared down at the crumpled paper he’d grabbed from his wallet and studied the words in his shaking hands. His stomach knotted, then flipped over on itself time and time again, and Tate willed himself to breathe. The last thing he needed was to pass out from a panic attack, but that was exactly what was happening. He was panicking. And the reason? The reason was as clear as day. He was the dumbest motherfucker on the planet. Yeah, he was. Fucking hell. He’d heard that love made people do some stupid shit before, but this… God, what if I can’t fix this? What if Logan doesn’t want me like that anymore? The thought made him want to be sick. He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to stop the room from spinning, but all that did was bring to mind Logan back in the bathroom, beautiful as always, looking at Tate for some kind of indication of what was running through his head. And what had Tate given him? Nothing. He’d just fled. Damn it. Tate shoved the piece of paper into his pocket, along with the pen he’d grabbed from the side table back in their suite, no longer able to look at it. What had he done to them? How had he let fear of the unknown possibly ruin this? And as the memories flooded him again… I dare you to try. I think you’re my truth. Terrify me. Marry me. …he was more than aware that it was that one, the last one, that didn’t have the right ending. He’d really messed this up, but he could make it right and wanted to, more than he wanted his next breath. He placed his head in his hands and shut his eyes, trying to gather some semblance of control so he could go back, find Logan, and do the one thing he realized he should’ve done all along. It wasn’t until he heard the sound of padded feet on the hardwood floor that he looked up to see that he didn’t need to go and find Logan, because he had tracked Tate down instead. With the fire flickering behind him, the sharp angles of Logan’s cheeks and jaw only enhanced a face Tate loved more than he thought possible, and when Logan pulled out the chair opposite him and reached across the table to take his hands, Tate couldn’t believe it had taken his brain this long to catch up and get to where it now firmly was. “Hey,” Logan said, his eyes roaming over Tate’s face, no doubt for signs, clues as to why he’d run away. “Hey,” Tate replied, and then lowered his gaze to their hands, marveling over the strength he found there when they were joined. Exactly…together, not apart. Always and forever, together. “What are you doing out here?” Logan asked, and Tate swallowed as he felt Logan tighten his grip. “I, uhh…” “Tate?” Logan said before Tate could give any kind of response. “What are you doing out here?” Tate withdrew his hand and ran it through his hair, and as Logan continued to watch him, he felt his nerves kick in. “Back there in the bathroom…” he started, and then stopped. As he thought over his words, Tate wondered if there was even a way to explain how badly he’d screwed this all up, but knew the only way he’d ever know was to try. “I had a thought. It was more of a moment, I guess. A flash of us. Of all we are and will be and— Shit, I sound crazy, don’t I?” Logan’s eyes narrowed, but he shook his head. “You don’t sound crazy. But you are freaking me out a little. Were the things you were thinking good things, at least?” Tate frowned and then shot Logan an apologetic look. The last thing Tate wanted was to worry him more—it was the exact opposite. “Yeah, of course. I should’ve probably started with that. Everything about you was good. Perfect, really, but me…” “What about you? You’re pretty fucking perfect from where I’m sitting. And back there in that bathroom, trust me, you looked better than any of those naked statues on the wall.” Tate tried for a smile but knew he didn’t quite pull it off when Logan asked, “What is it, Tate? Come on; you know you can tell me anything.” Okay, this is it, Tate thought, as he swallowed and then shifted in his seat, glancing over at the fire for a moment to gather his nerve. Then he turned back to Logan and asked, “Am I too late?” At Logan’s confused expression, Tate knew he didn’t understand what he was asking. So he reached into his pocket where he’d shoved the piece of paper, and then put it on the table. He smoothed his hand over it, lovingly tracing his fingers over the name he now wanted as his own, and then pushed it over in front of Logan. As Logan stared down at it, Tate watched him read over the words on the paper, waiting for a reaction, and when Logan looked up, Tate asked again, “Am I too late?” Logan blinked several times, and Tate held his breath, wondering if he was too late. But then something miraculous happened: Logan shook his head. The blood rushing around Tate’s head made his ears ring as he tried to comprehend what Logan was telling him, but he still hadn’t said a word, so Tate pulled the pen from his pocket and leaned over to circle the name he hadn’t been able to stop looking at ever since he’d found the piece of paper. As Logan looked down again, Tate saw a huge grin split his lips. “So what do you think? Can the world handle two Mr. Mitchells?”

NEW + GIVEAWAY: Whore by Willow Aster

Whore by Willow Aster is now LIVE!!!

OUR REVIEW:

Willow Aster's stark prose in Whore was very emblematic of the existence that the protagonist, Lilith seemed to exist. Her days were filled with very transactional, mechanical sex where she was beholden to the whims of her mother; it was only when Soti becomes part of her daily life that her the drab that colored her days burst into technicolor. This was also, in my opinion, when the novel seemed to go from a curious, but flat, read to a read that was fuller and engaging and lively.

As with all novels, there must be conflict and Aster went for a huge one. Whore didn't contain your run of the mill, typical romance type conflicts. Nope. She went big. And horrific. And the drab of Lilith's existence returned, colored at the edges with sadness and horror. Thankfully, the romance community never fails to deliver a HEA so we get to see Lilith have something better than where we started with her, and so we end with a softer, rose colored hue by the end.

SIDE NOTE: As a native Louisianian, and dweller of the New Orleans area, I am thrilled with all the details Willow Aster used and got right when it came to New Orleans. Not only did she get small details like names of restaurants (and the causeway!) right, she also didn't make a mockery of our accents and traditions, like so many like to do. I'm always so impressed when writers do their research and do it well, and it is so evident that Aster did more than a cursory look at a map when it came to writing this novel. Kudos to you, Willow Aster--I appreciate the time and effort you took to make it right.

Final thoughts? As this was my first time reading Willow Aster, I wasn't sure what to expect and I walked away thinking I'd definitely pick up something from her backlist and read it. Whore had an interesting premise--one that didn't try to spin Lilith's job as anything but what it was for her--in this case a lack of a choice--and didn't try to stigmatize or stereotype. It had interesting subplots and secondary characters that I wish had been a smidge more developed because I was curious about how and why, when it came to some of the things that happened. And it was a quick read that pulled me in and had me reading my day away, which is always the best, right?

PURCHASE YOUR COPY OF WHORE TODAY!

“I need a reason to exist.”
Beautiful, intelligent, independent, strong-willed, wealthy—Lilith Fontenot seems by all appearances, to have it all. But that’s not how the highest paid prostitute in New Orleans sees herself.
A stain on society. A scourge. A waste. Outsider. Prisoner…
Any idyllic dream of the normal life she may have once imagined, Lilith buried long ago. Her only plan now is survival.
But mob boss Nico Santelli and community center owner Soti Christos have not given up on Lilith. Each has his own very specific, very opposing, plans for her, and neither will rest until it becomes a reality.
WHORE is a singularly bracing take on an ancient tale of tireless love, betrayal, and the possibility of redemption.
I take a sudden deep breath and my breasts brush against his chest. The contact surprises us both. I do it again, intentionally this time, trying to gain control in the only way I know how. His neck flushes and he takes a step back. I enjoy the rush it gives me, knowing that I affect him too. “Hey, would you like to come around the corner with me to—” I swallow my surprise and shake my head, holding my hand up before he says anything else. “Please,” he says louder. “What’s your name?” “I am Sotirios … Soti.” “Soti, what makes you think you know anything about me?” He tries to make eye contact, but I focus on a spot just past his left ear. “I just want to help you…” His words trail off. The wind blows my hair forward, a sheet of black coming between us until I smooth the long strands down on either side. I gaze down the street and see a blurry little girl with black hair down to her waist in middle school, standing shy and hopeful in front of a group of girls. “We know what you are,” they said. They hurled spit and names on her and she stood there, taking it, until the teacher came and helped her. Help only got me so far. “You listen to me, okay?” I say so softly he leans in to hear me. “I was born for this.” When my eyes finally land on his again, I know his face will haunt me forever. He looks as bleak as I feel. I clear my throat. “Now, if you’ll excuse us.” With that, I loop my hand through the arm of my next income source, calculating how I can get the most money out of him for the least amount of time. It takes every ounce of willpower I own to not look Soti’s way one more time. Once we round the corner and I know he’s out of sight, all the adrenaline leaves my body, and I’m actually glad to have someone to hold onto. I avoid my reflection as we walk back to the house. I don’t want to know what the rest of the world sees when they look at me.

Willow Aster is the author of True Love Story, In the Fields, Maybe Maby, Fade to Red, and the upcoming release, Whore. Willow loves nothing more than writing the day away—anywhere will do. Her husband and two children graciously put up with her endless daydreaming and make fun of her for reading while cooking.

REVIEW + GIVEAWAY: Shelter by Jay Crownover

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Jay Crownover returns with the second standalone title in her Getaway series, SHELTER. Check out the excerpt below and pick up your copy today!

And that’s not all! RETREAT, the first standalone title in the Getaway series, is on sale! You can grab your copy for just $.99 for a limited time only.

OUR REVIEW:

I've been curious about this Jay Crownover cowboy-romance series since I first heard great things about Retreat, and now that I have a little time and have just finished Shelter, I know that I'll be circling back to Retreat to read Leo and Cy's story.

I enjoyed visiting a world so wildly different than the ones she's created in her other series. This world of cowboys, small town gossip, and intrigue was a quiet and intense one. Sutton and Em had some serious demons to overcome (THAT PROLOGUE!!!) and much of this novel was dedicated to each character showing us their interior monologues--witnessing them overcome struggles and fears and end up exactly where they needed to be. Not only was reading their story arc fulfilling, the secondary characters really rounded out this novel and added a richness to overall feel of this novel.

Now that I've been properly introduced to the Warner family and their significant others, I'm eager to see how Lane works out his current situation (and to really see how Cy and Leo fell in love). If you're looking for a good cowboy-romance, I think this series is a great place to start.

About SHELTER:

His life is chaos and confusion. It’s a storm of uncertainty and raging emotion.

Sutton Warner is a mess. Everything in his life feels like it’s unraveling.

He’s let a lot of people down lately, including his daughter. Sutton always promised his little girl he would never disappoint her and that he would always be there when she needed him. Until he wasn’t.

The truth is, he’s used to disappointing the women in his life. First was his mother who couldn’t find a reason to stick around when he was growing up. Then there’s his ex. The woman who takes unbridled delight in making his life incredibly complicated. Luckily, his daughter is still young enough to believe her old man is some kind of hero. But, he knows the day is coming when she realizes the truth, that he’s just a man with some serious flaws and a list of ever-growing weaknesses.

Finally, there’s the woman he’s desperately trying to forget with every shot tossed back and each pill popped.

He more than disappointed Emrys…he almost got her killed.

Her love is steady and sure. It’s a shelter shaped by conviction and silent assurance.

Emrys Santos is lost. Everything in her life feels pointless and futile.

She’s been busy running away from her feelings and all the people who love her the most—including her best friend, the one person who knows exactly what she’s been through. They promised to always stick together and to lean on one another. It was a promise Em had to break so she could lick her wounds and figure out her next move. For once, there is no easy way out of the tangled web of emotions she’s caught up in, and right now, she recognizes that all roads lead back to Wyoming…and back to Sutton.

The man she nearly got killed.

Shelter is a standalone novel, the second book in the Getaway series, which features the hardheaded and brokenhearted Warner brothers and the women who dare to love them. These boys are very good at putting the wild in wilderness.

EXCERPT: I’d been fooled once by the promise of quiet nights and serene days in the sunshine. I believed the brochure when it said I could leave my worries at home and escape to a simpler, quieter kind of life. I let myself be lured in by the picturesque landscape and stunning mountains. I foolishly fell prey to the temptation of leaving my current set of troubles behind in San Francisco while I hid away in the middle-of-nowhere Wyoming. I now knew firsthand the glossy brochure that brought me to Wyoming the first time was nothing more than a bunch of pretty, packaged lies. I knew the bar brawl erupting in front of me was hardly the worst thing that could happen here. In fact, the level of bloodshed and violence was child’s play compared to what I’d witnessed the last time I’d stepped foot in this small, quaint town. Well, I hadn’t really been in Sheridan last time I was here. I’d spent most of my time in the backwoods that surrounded the Warner brothers’ ranch, which was still a good forty-five minutes outside of this tiny town. The ranch was where I was currently trying to get to so I could see my best friend. When I left Wyoming, I told myself I would never come back. Ever. I told myself there was nothing here for me but bad memories and heartache. I was a pro at lying to myself, at telling myself exactly what I needed to hear to justify my actions. I could convince myself of anything, like it was okay that my last boyfriend stole my grandmother’s silver when I kicked him out because he needed it more than I did. I had no problem believing that pulling Leo out of the city was the only way to heal her broken heart even though she didn’t want to go. It was easier to distract her than it was to watch her wallow. I persuaded myself into believing what I needed to heal was space and solitude. I held onto that until time passed and I was still a mess. I was sick of my own company and of hiding from everything I was feeling. I was the one who always went out of my way to fix everyone else around me, it wasn’t exactly a shock to learn I didn’t have the skills to repair myself. I spent my days helping others focus on their goals, on doing better and achieving more, so I didn’t have to think about the lack of any ambition of my own. I turned thirty at the end of the year and I was still trying to figure out what and who I wanted to be when I grew up. I’d been aimless for a long time; the only direction in my life come from the fact I knew all the way down to my bones that I had to go back to Wyoming and face off with Sutton Warner.

REVIEW: Team Player Anthology

SBPR-BLT.jpg

Eleven authors. Eleven Novellas. This is one thick . . . book.

Christmas just became a whole lot merrier...

TEAM PLAYER, A Christmas Anthology featuring titles by LJ Shen, Kennedy Ryan, Adriana Locke, Mandi Beck, Emma Scott, Charleigh Rose, Ella Fox, Sara Ney, Meghan Quinn, Kate Stewart and Rochelle Paige is available NOW!

OUR REVIEW:
I have a secret. I initially decided to read this because some of the writers I find to be consistently great were writing novellas for this anthology. PLUSSSSS they were writing about athletes and I've discovered that I really enjoy reading about an athlete falling for their person. So, I truly wasn't sure if I'd like the new to me authors and guess what?! I DID. And that, my friends, is the beauty of an anthology that carefully selects the stories and writers--I now have some new writers to check out.

There's pretty much an athlete 'type' and his significant other for every type of reader in this anthology. The stories are really meaty and novella length (no slim short stories here) and they provide great story arcs, characters, and some seriously *fans self* sexy times. This collection is worth every penny so go grab it and enjoy!

NEW: True by Ella Frank

SBPRBanner-TRUE-RB

TRUE, the final book in The Temptation Series by Ella Frank and the highly anticipated wedding between Logan Mitchell and Tate Morrison is LIVE!

TRUE-FINAL

EXCERPT + GIVEAWAY: Whore by Willow Aster

Enjoy a sneak peek into WHORE by Willow Aster! This contemporary romance/suspense is releasing on December 26th! Mark your calendars!!!

“I don’t need any money,” I tell him. “I can make enough in the next few hours to cover me for the week.”
He flinches and turns toward me. The expression on his face makes my gut cinch. His eyes are like copper in the sun. So bright I have to look away.
I swallow and my voice shakes when I speak. “Thank you for everything. I won’t forget this.”
I put the phone in my pocket and decide to go while we’re on the topic.
“Wait, take this, please.” He reaches in his pocket and gives me a crumpled up wad of cash. “It’s not as much as I’d like to give you, but it’s all I have right now.”
“Can I do anything for you?” I ask, stepping toward him.
“No. Not everyone sees you as a business transaction, Lili,” he says softly.
My face is heated as I take the money and shove it in my pocket. I turn around and rush to the door. Before I leave, I chance another look at his face, but when we make eye contact I’m even more unsettled.
I lift a hand, whisper my goodbye, and stumble out of there. My eyes burn as I walk down the stairs, and even though the community center is bustling at this time of day, I don’t notice anyone else. By the time I step outside, tears are streaming down my face. I don’t even know why. His kindness … it confuses me.

New Orleans belongs to me. You don’t know my name, but I control everything you see—and all the things you don’t. My reach knows no bounds, and my demands are always met. I didn’t need to loan money to a failing family distillery, but it amuses me to have them in my debt. To have her in my debt. She doesn’t know she caught my attention. She should’ve been more careful. I’m going to own her. Consume her. Maybe even keep her. It’s time to collect what I’m owed. Keira Kilgore, you’re now the property of Lachlan Mount. *Ruthless King is book one of the Mount Trilogy*   Amazon US | Amazon UK | Amazon Paperback | iBooks | BN | Kobo

How can I want him and fear him in the same moment? They told me he’d mess with my head. Make it go to war with my body. But I didn’t realize it would be complete anarchy. I should’ve known better. When Mount’s involved, there are no rules. I will not surrender. I will not show weakness. I’ll stand my ground and make it out of this bargain with my heart and soul intact. But he has other plans . . .   Defiant Queen is the second book of the Mount Trilogy. Mount and Keira's story concludes in Sinful Empire.

Meghan March has been known to wear camo face paint and tromp around in woods wearing mud-covered boots, all while sporting a perfect manicure. She's also impulsive, easily entertained, and absolutely unapologetic about the fact that she loves to read and write smut. Her past lives include slinging auto parts, selling lingerie, making custom jewelry, and practicing corporate law. Writing books about dirty talking alpha males and the strong, sassy women who bring them to their knees is by far the most fabulous job she's ever had. She loves hearing from her readers at meghanmarchbooks@gmail.com.
