OUR REVIEW:

Isn't funny how a writer can take a character and develop them from someone who could be problematic, albeit intriguing, into someone who is noble and tender and sweet?! I mean, gah. Priest was so much more than I initially thought (many books ago) and to really get to know him and understand him was a fulfilling journey.

The third, but not final, novel in the Confessions series was intimate and romantic and funny and ended in a flurry of actions. Now that we know all of the backstories to these characters it'll be interesting to see how, exactly, the get to their forever-ever-after. Hopefully, since they've been through so much, Ella Frank won't give them too hard of a time in their final book. Annnnnd, wouldn't it be interesting if a certain Henri made an appearance :) ?!

I am complex.
My love is all-encompassing.
And when it comes to my heart, there is only one rule:
Don’t mess with what’s mine.
Until the age of seven, I was Joel Alexander Donovan, son of Jimmy.
The man who terrorized a town and made its citizens fear
the very ground he walked on. Including me,
the day I realized that ground ran red with blood.
At age eighteen, I became Priest.
A man without a past.
A man determined to right the wrongs of my father.
A man who never believed anyone could love the son of such a monster.
But then a thief stole my heart.
A sweetheart lit up my world.
And I forgot for a moment you should never turn your back on your enemy.
And thus begins a lesson to those who would seek to harm: Never underestimate what the Priest will do to protect the Princess and the Prick.

Excerpt:
CHAPTER ONE
CONFESSION
My name is not Joel Priestley.
My name is Joel Alexander Donovan.
And a long time ago, I was taught that things
aren’t always what they appear to be—and neither are people.

JOEL PRIESTLEY, A.K.A Priest, sat behind the wheel of his Aston Martin with his hands at the ten and two positions and his seatbelt fastened. He’d been sitting like that for the past thirty minutes or so. Ever since he’d pulled the vehicle into its designated parking spot alongside his and Julien’s—his husband’s—black Range Rover. Sinatra had been keeping him company, as Priest tried to block out the phone call he’d made back in his office to Henri. But no matter how loud he played the charismatic crooner, nothing seemed to lessen the impact of Henri’s words and the way they had made Priest’s stomach coil. “Nice to know you can at least follow an order if it’s to keep those you love safe… Be careful; keep an eye out…” And that was what he’d been doing for the past thirty minutes or so. Sitting in his car, with his eyes trained on the rearview and side mirrors, as his paranoia over what used to only exist in the shadows began to slowly creep back out into the light of day. Priest gritted his teeth and reminded himself that Jimmy wasn’t out of prison just yet and likely wouldn’t be for some time. He wasn’t about to appear out of thin air to exact absolution for what he believed was Priest’s biggest crime—abandonment. But that didn’t mean Jimmy hadn’t reached out to the others to find him. To track down the son who had turned his back on his family if, and when, he walked free. Priest cursed and slammed the heel of his palm against the steering wheel, then he reached for the seatbelt’s release, and as it retracted across his chest, he reached up and shoved it off his shoulder where it caught. As it snapped into place, Priest pulled the handle of the door and got out of the car. He needed to get upstairs. To get inside a locked lobby, where a security guard walked the halls, and his condo had a deadbolt on the front door. It was one of the main reasons he’d been interested in Logan’s place to begin with. The additional barriers between him and those he loved—and anyone who may want to hurt them. Julien had already texted to let Priest know he and Robbie arrived home safely. But as of yet, Priest hadn’t heard anything from Robbie, their boyfriend. Not that he’d expected to. The last image Priest had of their princess was an ashen face and betrayal in those usually bright blue eyes, and Christ, Priest wished he could erase that picture from his mind. The three of them had been making such headway lately. They had moved past the getting-to-know-you, comfortable stage of their relationship, and had been thisclose to slipping into that space where the heart and soul of the one whose body you were worshiping was coveted. But that had all changed now. The truth about his father having wiped out any trust he may have built with Robbie, judging by the expression on his face before Priest had left the brewhouse. All the joy, and all the happiness, the closeness the three of them had been reveling in, had been smothered by the dark cloud that descended on them, and Priest had a feeling it was going to take a lot of explaining on his behalf before they could get out from under it—if they ever could. Priest jabbed the button of the garage elevator, and when the doors slid open, he ran his key fob over the panel and hit the floor button. He leaned against the back wall and shut his eyes, and as the elevator ascended, he wondered how he was going to explain all of this to Robbie. He’d only ever had to do it once before. Only ever found one other he deemed important enough to share this side of himself with. And he’d been just as apprehensive, just as sick to his stomach, at the thought of revealing all to Julien, as he was heading up to face Robert Bianchi. Priest walked down the hallway toward their condo like a man heading toward his execution—or the execution of their new relationship—and when he got to the front door, he paused before entering. Scanning the hallway, he looked to his left, where their neighbor lived on the other side of the corridor, before he took a final glance back in the direction he’d come. Once he was satisfied there was no one about, he unlocked the door and headed inside. The first thing he noticed upon entry was how quiet it was. Lately, when he’d arrived home from work, the TV was on and there was the sound of someone doing something or other in the living room or kitchen. But not this afternoon. Right now, the place felt more like a library. The kind of space where you should tiptoe and whisper in case you offended whoever was inside—provided there was someone there to offend in the first place. But that was just his paranoia creeping in again. Of course someone was inside—two someone's, in fact. Julien had told him so, and when Priest stepped out of the short hallway, he spotted his husband immediately. Julien was curled up on the couch with a blanket over his legs and his phone in hand, and the second Priest moved into view, Julien’s legs came out from under him and he got to his feet. He dropped the phone on the cushion beside him, and as the blanket fell from his lap, it crumpled to the soft rug without a sound. Julien rushed around the couch and hurried over to Priest, and when he reached him, Julien took his face between his hands and pressed a hard kiss to his lips. “Mon Dieu, Joel,” Julien said. “I’ve been a mess worrying over you. I’m so glad you’re home.” Priest wound his arms around Julien’s waist, anchoring himself to the man who understood him in ways Priest had never imagined possible. “You don’t know how much I needed to hear that.” Julien trailed his fingers down the scruff on Priest’s cheek and frowned. “Was there really any doubt?” Priest shut his eyes and let Julien soothe him in the way that only he could. His touch, his words, this man’s mere presence—they were all vital to Priest’s survival. Priest let go of Julien’s waist to cover the hand still cradling his cheek. There were so many things he needed to say: “I’m sorry”or “You were right.I should’ve told Robert about this the second I found out.”But right then, all Priest could manage was: “There was no doubt. Not about you. Neverabout you.” Julien’s eyes softened as Priest’s shifted over his husband’s shoulder to the closed door of their bedroom. “Is he still here?” “Oui.” “I…” Priest paused as he searched for the words. “I wasn’t sure that he would be.” “I wasn’t either,” Julien admitted, and when Priest locked eyes with him again, Julien added, “He’s been in there since we got home. Hasn’t said a word.” “That was more than an hour ago.” Julien nodded. “I know. But he made it very clear he wasn’t ready to talk about things yet.” Not knowing what to say to that, Priest put his keys on the coffee table, and Julien placed a hand on his back. “Listen, he’s processing right now. What he found out about Jimmy… It’s a lot, mon amour.” “It’s more than that, Julien. You saw his face when he found out.” “Oui, I did. I also spoke to him in the car on the way home.” “He thinks I lied to him. Doesn’t he?” When Julien didn’t reply, Priest ran a hand through his hair. “Fuck,” he said. “Fuck. I should’ve told him about all of this before he moved in.” “And when should you have done that? At CRUSH? On our first date with him? Or maybe the second, when he had dinner here? I’m surethat would’ve made him feel right at home. There hasn’t been a good opportunity. You know that,” Julien reminded him, and touched his fingers to the sleeve of Priest’s jacket. “He just needs time to—” “No,” Priest said, shaking his head. “Time gives people a chance to distort things. To make them doubt what they once believed. You and I know that better than anyone. I won’t have him doubting this. Doubting us, Julien. Not because of fucking Jimmy. I’m going to go and talk to Robert, and he’s going to listen, and then the three of us are going to sit down and discuss this.” Something flashed in Julien’s expression, but instead of saying what was on his mind, he let go of Priest’s arm and said, “Okay.” Priest narrowed his eyes in question, but Julien remained quiet. So Priest turned on his heel and headed toward their bedroom to track down their boyfriend and try to make things right again.

REVIEW: Confessions: Julien by Ella Frank

SBPRBANNER-Julien-RB

Confessions JULIEN AMAZON copy

OUR REVIEW:
In Robbie's novel we got the basic lay of the land--what did Priest and Julien want, exactly, with Robbie and how would he respond? How would it work? In Julien's novel we get to see their relationship in action and we get to know more about what's haunting these Julien and Priest and how a relationship of three can actually work. I have to say that normally I'm guilty of thinking of 3 as someone always being left out -- in friendships and otherwise--but Ella Frank shows how it can work. How when adults communicate, ask questions, allow themselves to be vulnerable and to trust, 3 can be a very magic number.

As with most? all? Ella Frank novels, the steam factor is high but it's not salacious and sordid, it's loving and playful and passionate. As a matter of fact, because the steaminess was a foregone conclusion, it seemed like the story of these men and their backgrounds were allowed to unfurl and develop in a pace that didn't have to be a way to set up a sexy encounter.

Looking ahead to the final novel, there are still many questions to be answered before we get to a HEA. It'll be fun to see who pops up in Priest's novel --the cameos in these last two have loyal readers smiling and anticipating who will be next to get the Ella Frank treatment.

People are complex.

Love a double-edged sword.

And when it comes to a broken heart, there are no rules, only time…

For the past eight years, Julien Thornton has been living with a secret. One that only a handful of people know about.

To the outside world, he has it all.

A thriving career. A loving husband. And a face that the American public fell for by the millions, on a reality show that inadvertently saved his life.

But behind the shine of celebrity, behind the easygoing nature, a crippling truth fills Julien with pain and self-loathing. It’s a truth that he fights to overcome daily with the help of his husband, Joel Priestley, and now their boyfriend, Robbie Bianchi.

But unlike Priest, Robbie doesn’t know what he’s helping Julien to fight. He doesn’t know what Julien did all those years ago. And with the anniversary of his sister’s death fast approaching, the time for explanations is running out.

And thus the question: will the princess be able to forgive the prick as the priest once did?

Only time will tell.

Confessions: Robbie, an all new tantalizing contemporary MMM Romance by Ella Frank is available NOW!

Our Review
Shel: Ella Frank!
I don't know where to start. The ending or the beginning?!?!?!
That ending! I'm curious. So very curious about alllll the things when it comes to these men, but Priest and Julien have me dying of curiosity--I can't wait to know more. Court: Amen! Ella Frank has been teasing us right to the edge of insanity for so long...and it is a trip we willingly take again and again!

Shel: Now that I got that out of the way, let me say that I love that we're getting this set of stories. At the end of Tate and Logan's True I was completely taken with the idea of this story and the way you built it up and teased and pulled me in is so classic Ella Frank 101. You had me laughing and swooning and DYING for action between these three. And to be honest, I wasn't so sure at first that I'd feel this way at the end. I was worried that Robbie was more of an idea or a plaything at first and that he'd be more of a prop for them, rather than an equal partner--and while he's not up to speed, yet, simply because of his lack of time and experiences with them,  it's evident that the end game is for him to be that; I just hope no one gets hurt along the way. Because you totally sucked me in and I love the idea of them and hope that all obstacles are cleared and all systems are go when it comes to these three. Court: I feel like that too. I feel that maybe someday along the way we'll get the result we want...but there will be some cleverly placed twists and trials along the way that will give us palpitations. Ella Frank is the master at giving us suspense, love, heart racing sexy scenes and also giving such a well plotted out story and this time is no different. Her characters have heart. They're realistic in that we might want to be friends with them, and we hurt with them and laugh and have joy with them too. I am so *nervous* with what is to come, but so excited!!!

Shel: You've convinced me that the impossible is possible--that there's a chance that three can be better than two. And I'm no fool, I know the bad stuff is coming, I'm holding out hope that you'll more than make up for it with the good stuff! Court: HAHA! See...it'll happen. We'll be ready like holding your breath before you go over the hill of a roller coaster, but our hands will be up the entire time!

Relationships are complex.
Love ever-changing.
And when it comes to rules of the heart,
they were made to be broken…
That’s what Robert Antonio Bianchi was telling himself, anyway.
Otherwise, he really had no excuse for what—or who—he’d done.
No excuse, except for his lonely heart, a pitcher of margaritas, four Bitter Bitches, and the apparent need to confess all his weaknesses to the two men he knew would bring him nothing but trouble.
But trouble was nothing new.
Just ask his crazy sisters or any of his friends, and they’d be the first to tell you:
If there was a bad decision to be made, Robbie always had a knack for making it.
And thus begins the story of the priest, the princess, and the prick.

Excerpt:

CHAPTER ONE
CONFESSION
If there’s a bad decision to make, I will make it. DRUNK-DIALING IS never a smart move. But drunk-dialing a married man? That is a monumentally stupid move. That was the thought rolling around Robbie’s muddled brain as he stood with his best friend Elliot at the bar of CRUSH and tossed back his fourth Bitter Bitch. The conversation he was having with himself wasn’t a new one—or a welcome one, he thought as he swayed on his feet and kind of stumbled into the stool beside him. But forgetting his lonely life with alcohol and men who were all wrong for him seemed like an increasingly good way to cope tonight. The hum and throb of the bass beat was rattling through him, but instead of feeling the pull he usually did to head out to the dance floor and have fun, tonight it seemed to be having the opposite effect. It was making him think really stupid thoughts. “You’re so wasted, Bianchi,” Elliot said as he grabbed Robbie’s arm and guided him to the barstool. “What’s that? Your third shot? And how many margaritas did you have at dinner?” Robbie held up two, then three fingers, and shrugged. “Who cares? Everyone had their New Year’s on Sunday. Tonight’s mine, and I want to celebrate.” “If you celebrate any more, you aren’t gonna remember your first night out of the New Year.” “Don’t care,” Robbie said, as he waved his hand through the air with flourish and leaned a little too much into the action. Luckily, Elliot was there to prop him up. “I wanna have fun tonight. Do something I shouldn’t.” Elliot leaned his elbows back on the bar so he was facing the dance floor and said, “Why don’t you get out there and let someone do you instead? You look gorgeous tonight, darling.” He’s right, I do look cute, Robbie thought. In his skinny jeans and purple V-neck tee that was practically a second skin, Robbie had gone all out with smoky eyes and a new pink shade of gloss he’d bought a couple of days ago that tasted like—mmm, strawberries. He could totally hit the dance floor, find a willing man, and let him do all kinds of things. But that seemed so boring tonight, so normal, and so not what he wanted. He wanted wild. He wanted adventure. He wanted danger. And when the two men he knew were both those things entered his mind, Robbie quickly shook his head, trying to shake them free. Stop thinking about them, he ordered himself, but that was easier said than done. One of them was one of the sexiest men he’d ever seen, and the other the most frustrating—and what was worse was that he couldn’t have either of them even if he wanted to. What was with everyone being fucking married all of a sudden? And to each other? But oh the dreams he’d been having lately. The three of them, all sweaty and naked; they were enough to make him want to— No, no, no. That is the worst idea you could have, Robbie told himself. Drunk or sober. Worst. Idea. Ever. Plus, you don’t even like one of them. So stop obsessing over it. “Earth to Robbie…” Elliot said, waving a hand, and Robbie shrugged. “I don’t know. I’m just not in the mood.” “You’re not in the mood to grind all over a naked man? Okay, where the hell is my best friend and what did you do with him?” Elliot asked as he swept his black bangs out of his eyes. “I don’t know.” Robbie slumped forward on the bar, dramatic as ever, and looked up at Elliot from under his lashes. “I think I’m in a state of mourning, El, and I don’t know how to get out of it.” Elliot frowned. “Is this about Logan? I thought you were happy for him and Tate?” “I am, but— Ugh. They just got engaged, and now all of a sudden, he’s married. Married.” “I know, babe. But you knew it was coming.” “Doesn’t make it any easier. Knowing there are two more beautiful men off the market forever due to a ring and a piece of paper is just depressing.” “Two more men?” Elliot said, regarding him with a suspicious eye. “Who else do you know who’s hitched?” Julien, Robbie instantly thought, as an image of the famous chef came to mind. Julien “the Prick” Thornton. And this time, as Julien’s name ran through Robbie’s head, he made a point to roll the Jul over his tongue the way Julien had when he’d introduced himself that night at the bar. That’s right…Julien “I’m gay, gorgeous, and, oh yeah, married to your worst enemy” Thornton. He was hitched. “No one,” Robbie said, and pouted. Then he swiveled on the stool to look out at the men gyrating all over one another. “You go and play for the both of us. I’m going to sit here and—” “Ferment?” “Okay that word is too big for my brain right now,” Robbie said, and winced. “Go and feel up the muscles and men for me. Someone should get some enjoyment out of them.” Elliot pursed his lips. “I don’t know…” “I’m just gonna sit here. Not going anywhere,” Robbie promised, crossing a finger over his chest. “Your heart is on the other side, genius.” Robbie switched sides and did it again. “I’m just gonna drown my sorrows so my body hurts tomorrow and will take my mind off my broken heart.” “Aww, cheer up, Buttercup. Your Prince Charming will come to you one day soon.” “Well, until then”—Robbie gestured for the bartender—“I’m going to drink myself into a deep slumber in the hopes that maybe he’ll come on me, or, you know, at least kiss me back to life.” Elliot placed a hand on Robbie’s arm. “Do not go anywhere. I’ll be back for you.” “I can’t feel my legs to move, so… I’ll stay. Like a good little boy.” “Don’t know how good you are, but…” Elliot chuckled, then before he headed out to the dance floor, said, “Where’s your phone?” Robbie dug into his pants pocket and pulled it free. Elliot opened the contacts and scrolled down to his name, and then set it on the bar in front of Robbie. “You need me, call. Do not leave this seat.” Robbie touched his fingertips to his temple in a sloppy salute and then hiccupped. “Yes, sir.” “Okay. Be back for you soon.” Elliot then turned to the bartender and said, “No more after this for him.” When the bartender nodded, Robbie’s mouth fell open. “Hello, you’re not my mother.” “Lucky for you. She’d be spanking your ass right now, not to mention your sisters, and I’m sure you’d much rather have that done by a man who would then pound it afterward. I’ll be back.” Robbie dismissed Elliot with a wave of his hand, and then took great interest in scrolling up and down his list of contacts, searching for someone to occupy his time. It wasn’t until he saw Julien’s number that he realized how drunk he was, because that was the only excuse he could think of as to why he hit call. Well that, and: If there’s a bad decision to make, I will make it. Confessions-Robbie-AN.jpg
