REVIEW: Black Sunshine by Karina Halle

OUR REVIEW:
Shel: I am so excited that Karina Halle decided to write this book! It's been FOREVER since I've read a vampire romance...maybe since the Anne Rice series? ...and I KNEW that in Karina Halle's hands the characters and plots would be everything I wanted it to be and I.WAS.RIGHT.

Shel: I really enjoyed the blending of reality and the supernatural and how Lenore seemed to have all the reactions that I would have when she's kidnapped and founds out that she's not quite human. Her questions and confusion and initial hostility to it all made her relatable and engaging. And of course, Mr. Alpha Vampire, Absolon, was as fascinating as he was mysterious and his moments of vulnerability had me alllll in to this story of vampires and love.

Shel: While Halle gave us a lot of background and explanation, she left the door open for more books, thankfully, because I feel like there is still so much more to know. I still have so many questions about what, exactly, she is and who her dad really is/was, as well as curiosity about the other characters, and the inevitable challenging times to come, now that Lenore has been identified.

Shel: Lenore and Absolon's story was absorbing and interesting and while it can be read as a stand alone, there will be more stories to come and I am so eager. No pressure, Karina Halle, but your fans CANNOT WAIT FOR MORE.

Black Sunshine by Karina Halle is now live!

All Lenore Warwick wants for her 21st birthday is to hang out with her friends, finish her second year at Berkley with flying colors, and maybe catch the eye of a hot musician playing a show at a club that she can now (legally) get into.
Unfortunately, fate has other plans for her.
A week before her birthday, she's kidnapped by the brooding and dangerous stranger with cold eyes and a lethal touch, who has been stalking her on San Francisco's fog-shrouded streets. Absolon Stavig isn't your average criminal though. He's a centuries-old vampire who's caught between wanting to kill Lenore and wanting to save her.
You see Lenore, too, is a vampire.
She just doesn't know it yet.
Taken by a pair of vampire slayers when she was just an infant, Lenore was raised never knowing her true nature. All Lenore knows is that she has seemingly normal parents who love her, that she's exceptionally smart, and she's squeamish around blood. But once she turns twenty-one, she'll fully turn into a vampire, and Solon hopes he'll be there to guide her, opening her eyes to her deepest hunger...both sexual and otherwise.
But this turning can't be kept a secret. Soon both slayers and vampires are hunting Lenore, with only Solon and his unpredictable motley crew of vampires to save her.
If they don't kill her first.
Black Sunshine is a dark adult standalone romance with a paranormal twist, about sex, love, secrets, and revenge, set in contemporary San Francisco.

REVIEW: Mafia Bride by C.D. Reiss

MAFIA BRIDE (The DiLustro Arrangement #1) by CD Reiss
Release Date: March 16th
  Genre/Trope: Arranged Marriage/Mafia Romance

MAFIA BRIDE from New York Times Bestselling author CD Reiss is now available! Make sure you grab this dark mafia romance and get lost in book 1 of THE DILUSTRO ARRANGEMENT!

OUR REVIEW:

Shel: Once again, D. Reiss has written a novel that held my complete attention and has me eager for the next installment. Mafia Bride has the most despicable premise--a young woman whose life is not really her own, taken by a man whose desire for her heart and mind is mostly shielded from us (and her) by his controlling and assholish ways. There are so many questions--why her? why now?--and only the most cursory of answers; just enough to give us the briefest of understandings and make us hungry for more.

Court: Did we forget or just choose not to remember that C.D. Reiss is the queen of captivation, but also holding all of those secrets deep in her brain! She made us work for it, but I for one enjoyed every single word. This story was interesting, and definitely made me ask all kinds of questions to know more!

Shel: Violetta is a young nursing student, eager to travel and escape the confines of her life for the summer. She dreams of Greece's sunny beaches and handsome boys and somehow ends up married to an older mafia boss in what seems like the blink of an eye. She's confused, hurt, bitter and she holds on to that for a vast majority of the novel (which makes sense and I liked her grudge, honestly--what happened to her was unforgivable and I was rooting for her to hold that grudge). Santino, while more charming as you got to know him, was also exactly the alpha mob boss you'd expect from CD Reiss. He's controlling and terrible and yet as we get to know him, vulnerable and deeper than I wanted to give him credit for. My ability to forgive and forget isn't there yet...but I sense it's coming because the more we get to know him, the more charming and forgivable he becomes. Damn Reiss for making me like him...though it remains to be seen, especially by the end, I know it's coming and I can't wait for the journey to get there. Court: GAH! Right...the characters and where they come from is very interesting. We get the low hanging fruit, but nothing is as it seems, and I know there is a shoe that is going to drop or a shadow that is lurking nearby and I cannot decide who might be the big bad wolf coming to get Violetta. Is it her new husband or is there someone far more sinister out there waiting? I can't decide, but I definitely am very excited about where this series is going.

Shel: There's so much more to come, I just know it, and I'm eager to see where she takes these characters next and how much she tortures us before we get to that happily ever after ending.  Court: We will love every second of that torture, won't we! Read it, immediately, if you know what is good for ya!

Blurb: An epic mafia romance trilogy that sets a new bar for just how dark a hero can get, from NY Times Bestselling author CD Reiss. Some girls dream of marrying a prince, but I never imagined I’d be sold to a king. Santino DiLustro. The king. The monster. The keeper of secrets. When he forced me to marry him, I cried for love I’d never know. When he locked me away, I cried for the freedom I lost forever. Every other tear I’ve shed is for my soul, because I’m falling for the devil himself.       About the Author: CD Reiss is a New York Times bestselling author. REVIEW: Wild Wind by Kristen Ashley

Wild Wind, an all-new incredible love story in the fan-favorite CHAOS series from New York Times bestselling author Kristen Ashley and 1,001 Dark Nights is available now!

OUR REVIEW:

Shel: First can I say that I love that Kristen Ashley's version of a novella length novel is really everyone else's full length novel? NEVER CHANGE, KA, never change. In this 1001 Dark Nights novella, Wild Wind, we get Dutch's brother, Jagger's story, and whooaaaa was I not prepared for the tears. I'm usually laughing and swoooning through Kristen Ashley's books but this one just really hit me in the feels. She mined the depths of Jag and Archie's hearts and no one was unscathed. I loved that we got a look at how Jagger sees the marriage of his mother to Hound, the relationship of his brother and Georgie, and the brotherhood of Chaos. The quiet reflections and struggles he had to accept the loves and losses were just so heartfelt. And when you add to that Archie's story and her own heartaches and successes, I was helpless against the tsunami of emotions that came up. And while there were tears, there were also lots of smiles and laughs and I honestly just adore the characters and worlds Kristen Ashley has made with the Chaos series.

Court: Girl me, too. I am Jagger a little bit, and yes that hit me right in the feels and I am still feeling it. You need to read this one (even if you're not well-versed in Chaos land) because it is such a well written story. Their navigation of some heavy hitting emotional stuff while in a new relationship is really dang great, and I didn't want it to end at all! I really feel like this one brought some things full circle if you are well-versed in the Chaos MC though, and that was pretty cool too.

Shel: I wish I didn't sound like a record on repeat when I say that I love all things Kristen Ashley but I do, so I'm just going to own it and move on. Court: Hahahaha! I know. Feels like we've said most of the things we can say, but we'll say it again. We really love Kristen Ashley (Our KA) and the Chaos MC and this book in particular....and we really love the world of 1001 Dark Nights novellas because they give a wonderful sneak peek into a well established series but don't make you feel like you've missed out. It's pretty cool!

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kristen Ashley brings a new story in her Chaos series…

When he was sixteen years old, Jagger Black laid eyes on the girl who was his. At a cemetery. During her mother’s funeral.

For years, their lives cross, they feel the pull of their connection, but then they go their separate ways.

But when Jagger sees that girl chasing someone down the street, he doesn’t think twice before he wades right in. And when he gets a full-on dose of the woman she’s become, he knows he finally has to decide if he’s all in or if it’s time to cut her loose.

She’s ready to be cut loose.

But Jagger is all in.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

NEW REVIEW: The Last Piece of His Heart by Emma Scott

OUR REVIEW:

I've been curious about the story of Ronan and Shiloh since book one of The Lost Boys series--they always seemed a little chummy and I just knew their story had to be a good one (as all of the stories in this series have been) and I wasn't wrong.

The story of Ronan and Shiloh was absolutely agonizing to read...in the best way. The push and pull between them; the lust and denial and rejection and inability to stay away just built and built until Emma Scott finally relented and let them have each other. THANK GOD she did it when she did because I don't know how much longer I could've hung in there waiting for these two to get their shit together. Their collective story was a good one but their individual stories were powerful. Both of them had such sad family histories and while Shiloh had a great support system (Ronan, really did not), it didn't negate the sadness of her situation. I was completely emotionally invested by how hard both of them fought to have what they wanted and found myself tearful when things felt like they were falling apart, right when things were supposed to be going so right. The closer I got to the ending the more I felt hopeful and desperate for the happily ever after I knew was coming and when it came? The happiness and relief I felt were almost palpable.

In addition to Ronan and Shiloh, seeing Miller and Holden and their significant others was a nice finishing touch..a nice farewell to the series. While I'd love to see Emma Scott revisit them all one day, I also felt the ending was really well done and it felt finished. I really enjoyed this entire series, even when it killed me, sometimes, to read it. I have no idea what Emma Scott is doing next but I know I will be eager to read it when it's time.

From USA Today and Wall St. Journal bestselling author, Emma Scott, comes the third and final novel in the Lost Boys series--a gritty, angsty love story about two lost souls searching for their place in the world, and what it means to be truly found.

The Last Piece of His Heart by Emma Scott is now live!

At Santa Cruz Central High School, they called them the misfits, the outcasts, the weirdos. But most of us knew them as the Lost Boys...

Ronan Wentz has been to hell and back, and he carries the scars to prove it. Worse, the blood of a monster runs through his veins. After ten years in foster care, eighteen-year-old Ronan is finally reunited with family. His uncle gives him a roof over his head and puts him to work, managing a shabby apartment complex in Santa Cruz, California.

But a second chance is still a second chance. Ronan becomes a solitary hunter, a vigilante, walking the streets at night to keep the nightmares at bay. If he can use the anger burning in his tainted blood to protect instead of hurt, maybe then he'll find the absolution he seeks.

Then he meets Shiloh.

Shiloh Barrera looks like she has it all together. Smart, ambitious and full of artistic creativity she channels into making beautiful one-of-kind jewelry. But Shiloh's cool, capable demeanor is all a front. Her demons drive her to succeed as much as her ambition. To prove her worth to the mother who can't stand to look at her, and who's harboring secrets of her own.

When Shiloh and Ronan meet, the physical attraction is instant and scorching. Neither believe it will last. Falling in love is an impossible pipe dream saved for those less shattered and damaged than they are.

But as hard as they try to resist, the growing feelings between them seem inevitable... until one terrible night destroys Shiloh's dreams and Ronan's future. When the smoke clears, and the rubble settles, they'll have to choose - do their pasts determine their future, or can they build a new one from the broken pieces of their hearts?

Lost Boys is a new series of interconnected, coming-of-age standalones from USA Today bestselling author Emma Scott.

REVIEW: Candy Colored Sky by Ginger Scott

NOW AVAILABLE

𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗸𝘆 by Ginger Scott is LIVE! This is a coming of age love story, stand alone. One-click your copy and take a peek inside below!

 OUR REVIEW:

As I told Ginger when I finished reading Candy Colored Sky,  when you read this novel, you aren't going to want it to end. I got to the last page and wanted there to be so much more because I just loved the sweet story of Jonah and Eleanor. As a matter of fact, I loved their story so much that I'm hoping they decide to pester Ginger and keep talking to her so that she revisits them later.

What makes Jonah and Eleanor such a stand out for me? Well, Jonah for one. He was the most adorkable, awkward, sweet characters I've come across in a long time. He had this wonderful combination of confidence and self-awareness with the most adorable case of nerves when he was with Eleanor. I also loved his grandfather and mom and best friend--they're banter, inability to not give him shit about everything, and just all around care they had for each other made it a warm and hard to put down read.

Then, of course, is the whole first love aspect. Reading about a guy getting the girl he's had a mad crush on for years, is just so heart-squeezingly sweet. Jonah thinks Eleanor is totally out of his realm and so reading them finding a way to each other was so very John Hughes movie wonderful--a complete throwback to my teen years--nostalgic and heartwarming. Of course, that they connect through grief and hardship, makes for some hard, teary moments but with Ginger Scott's ability to weave levity through tears, I found myself smiling way more than crying.

Mark my words, you will not want Candy Colored Sky to end so here's to hoping that Ginger finds more of Jonah and Eleanor's story in the vault in her brain.

“This book is coming of age PERFECTION. You’ll see pieces of yourself, of your heart and your soul in this story. This is a top read forever for me. There aren’t enough stars. HIGHLY recommend!” - Bestselling Author Dylan Allen

Blurb:

Jonah Wydner has been in love with his neighbor Eleanor Trombley for years. He has watched her life play out from the sidelines—homecoming dances, football parties, and first dates. Her life seemed easy…simple…𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵. The complete opposite of his own.

But when Eleanor’s younger sister goes missing and the national media sets up camp in the middle of their street, the girl with the seemingly perfect life shows up in Jonah’s garage in search of a place to hide from the hurt and chaos. What begins as one night becomes many filled with unexpected surprises and unveiling, healing truths about Jonah’s own messy past.

Soon, Jonah gets to know the real Eleanor, and discover all the ways they’re the same. Friendship blossoms into more, plans turn into promises, and hopes and dreams become shared under the warm glow of the fading Midwestern sunsets. But how far can a kiss under a candy-colored sky take them? And what happens when the clouds close in?

EXCERPT:

“You know, it’s an excellent time to climb up on the roof and watch the sun go down.” Her fingers slip away as she makes the suggestion, and I find my hands frozen in place for a moment all on their own. I shove them back into my pockets.

“Is it really that late?” I lift a brow.

“It’s almost four.” She winces and I join her.

“I don’t think I’ve slept this late since I had the flu sophomore year,” I admit.

She laughs at my response, then hits the button for the garage door.

“This used to be a regular Saturday morning occurrence for me,” she says.

“I’m pretty sure you can’t call it morning,” I add.

She spins on her heels as she moves out of the garage and points at me.

“You are probably right.”

We cross my driveway to the very dead grass in our side yard. Eleanor leaps up to grab the eave but her fingers slip at her first attempt. She crouches to jump again but stops, spinning to face me as she points over her shoulder with her thumb.

“You been sunset watching without me?” she asks.

The ladder is still out. I haven’t touched it since the last time we went up there.

“That would sound a lot better than admitting I’m too lazy to put it away, but sadly, I’m a lazy ass.” I mush my lips together and shrug.

“Well, my muscles are not feeling it today, so let’s just say you were planning ahead.” She marches to the ladder and scales it two rungs at a time. Even at her laziest, she’s got me beat.

She waits at the roof’s edge for me this time, and I’m a little embarrassed because I climb ladders the same way my grandfather does—like one wrong move might break a hip. I crawl onto the shingles as she stands and holds a hand out for me.

“I can’t run and leap over there like you do,” I say, waving my hand just out of reach. It’s like I’m about to shake on a deal and I want to make sure I know the terms.

Eleanor leans her head back and the sound of real laughter pours out with the rasp that I’ve missed.

“It’s fine. I’ll go slow,” she says, taking my hand and helping me to my feet.

I sway a little, only half joking that I’m searching for my balance. I notice that she walks along the rooftop on her toes, almost like a ballerina making her way to center stage. I move with the grace of a Clydesdale.

We settle in the ridge this time and I lower myself carefully, dividing my weight over both sides of the roof. Eleanor seems to collapse into a sitting position, her legs knotted together as she perches at the apex facing me. I breathe out a laugh at how different we are.

“What?” she asks.

“Just, you can tell you do things like gymnastics and stuff. It’s pretty clear I work out math equations.” I shrug.

“You’d think that would make you more confident up here, being able to compute the exact angles and all that junk,” she argues.

“Huh,” I say, taking her reasoning to heart. I glance to my left and then my right, but before I can fully take in the angle of the descent behind me I grip the roof’s surface beneath my thighs.

“Nope. There’s no math logic for this,” I say.

She giggles, an actual giggle. It’s the best sound, like a children’s birthday party with a petting zoo kind of glee.

REVIEW: The Devil in Her Bed by Kerrigan Byrne

OUR REVIEW:

I've loved reading the stories of the Red Rogues--each story has been interesting and filled with strong friendships and strong women. And as much as I've enjoyed each novel, I've officially found my new favorite Kerrigan Byrne in The Devil in Her Bed

I've been insanely curious about the story of Francesca and this novel not only gives the history but gives me a heroine who is so fierce and independent and strong that I can't imagine another character topping her in my top favorite heroines. I loved her story--her bravery, sleuthing, and lack of effs to give filled my entire afternoon. I enjoyed being a fly on the wall as she solved the mystery of the slaughter of her childhood and 'seeing' Chandler become completely smitten by her. He really was the perfect partner for her--he had his own secrets, matched her strength and stubbornness and also had run out of effs to give--and reading his reactions to her was just so much fun.

As what I'm assuming is the final novel featuring the Red Rogues comes to an end, it was fun to see what Cecilia and Alexandra were up to and to see all three of them have their happily ever afters. And while I'm sad to see them go, I'm excited to explore even more of the characters and stories written by Kerrigan Byrne.

NEW REVIEW: Marriage and Murder by Penny Reid

The Devil is in the details . . .

Cletus Byron Winston wishes to marry Jennifer Anne Donner-Sylvester (aka The Banana Cake Queen) poste haste! He's spent the last year wanting nothing more than for the celebrations to be brief, libations flowing, and BYOB (bring your own blueberries). His future mother-in-law has other plans, plans his intended has been willing to indulge, much to Cletus's chagrin. Therefore, so must he. To a point. But truth be told, he wouldn't mind if the meddlesome matriarch disappeared, at least until the nuptials are over.

OUR REVIEW:

Marriage and Murder is the second cozy murder in a limited series. So far this series has been focused on Jenn's messed up family and Cletus's desire to protect her from any fall out that may happen because of them. The mystery of who did what, and when, is the primary focus of this novel but truth be told, it's just a vehicle for more Cletus and Jenn and I'll always be 100% down for more Cletus and Jenn. They never get old. Cletus and his code for living are immensely entertaining. The way his family and community accept him and yet are so exasperated by him never fail to crack me up. And his capacity for love and concern for his loved ones under that curmudgeonly exterior just keeps my love affair for him alive and well. Plus, Jenn and her old lady southern mannerisms in her young self just cracks me up. For those who aren't from the south, many of things she says or thinks are really things I've heard older southern women say all of my life--it's just funny hearing it from a younger person. Her absolute adoration of Cletus and her huge heart for all those who cross her path make her the perfect addition to the Winston family. Together these two are incredibly charming and when you throw in cameos from many of our favorite Green Valley couples, it's just real good time.

If you're a Cletus and Jenn fan, you're going to have so much fun with Marriage and Murder

On the night of Cletus and Jenn's long-awaited engagement party, just when the surly schemer is of a mind to take matters into his own hands, a shocking event upends everyone's best laid plans and sends the small hamlet of Green Valley into complete disarray. The final months leading up to Cletus and Jenn's matrimonial bliss are plagued with chaos and uncertainty. Will Cletus and Jenn finally make it to the altar? Still Standing by Kristen Ashley

OUR REVIEW:

Unless you’re brand new to KA, you know what you’re getting into when you buy her books. For me it’s the comfort of reading characters who, inevitably, are going to be a mess or cause a mess, and eventually will have to clean up that mess. It’s the relationships that are built, the friendships that are challenged and yet somehow make it...or don’t. It’s the sisterhood and the brotherhood and the sense of family that runs through her works. It’s all of this and that one little thing or twist that makes this book or the next a little different. But ultimately it’s all the comfort of knowing I’ll have all of these things and more that keep me buying and reading (and rereading) KA’s books.

Additionally, the humor, the love, and the connections to other series all hook me in and keep me coming back for more. So is STILL STANDING a break from any of this? Uh, no. Did I enjoy it? Of course. I spent my entire day getting to know new characters and excited that a new series is now underway. Clara and Buck and their crew are guaranteed to entertain me for many books to come and I’m here for it.

SYNOPSIS:

When Clara Delany walks into the Aces High Motorcycle Club’s hangout, she’s hit rock bottom. She’s hiding her car from the repo man, she has less than two dollars in her bank account and the only employment she can get is delivering messages for a criminal.

All because of a man. Therefore, she’s sworn off them.

And then she meets West “Buck” Hardy, president of the Aces High MC.

Buck also meets her, and the minute he does, he makes it clear (to everyone but Clara) that they’re starting something. Since Clara doesn’t get that message, she decides to leave Buck and sort out her life in order to come back to him clean.

She’s not gone but hours before life hits Clara with another blow. Which means Buck and his boys have to ride in and save the day. After that, Buck makes no bones about where they stand.

But does he?

Welcome to the first novel in the Wild West MC series which will tell the stories of the brothers of the Aces High MC, the Resurrection MC and the Chaos MC…and the women who love them.
