REVIEW: Rebel North by J.B. Salsbury

I’m not who I led her to believe. I’m sin wrapped in silk. Betrayal masked by beauty.

And she’s not the only one with scars…

Rebel North, an all-new stunning and seductive standalone romance from New York Times bestselling author JB Salsbury is available now!

OUR REVIEW:

These North brothers and their novels are absolutely impossible to pass up...and impossible to slowly read. I started Rebel North with the intention of savoring the reading experience and I wound up devouring the novel in less than a day. I was absolutely absorbed by the story of Kingston and Gabriella.

At first I was taken by the mysterious Gabriella; she was such an interesting mix of things: caring hospice worker, queen of snark and confidence in many situations, and yet self-conscious about the scars she has...the scars that we don't know much about for the vast majority of the novel. I had so much fun reading her sections when she was Kingston's beard. Her snappy comebacks and hilarious cover stories just made me fall in love with her.

Honestly, Kingston was such a pleasant surprise. I don't know why I assumed that Hayes would have the next novel but I did? And so getting to know the fashion forward, confident Kingston was interesting and fun. Just like Gabriella, he had a lot of humor to offer the story but he also had a lot of heart. I found his story compelling and was cheering for him every time he was up against Hayes or August (a-holes!). And the absolute adoration he had for Gabriella was sweet and really not what I was expecting at all.

Speaking of surprises...there was definitely a twist I didn't see coming and I LOVE IT WHEN THAT HAPPENS. I was just going along, enjoying their story and BOOM! twist. So good. Also the chemistry and sexy-times was fire...another thing I wasn't expecting and really enjoyed.

I can officially say I'm addicted to these North brothers and their stories and I'm so looking forward to seeing Hayes be brought to his knees by someone soon :)

In a city where image is everything, Gabriella turns heads for all the wrong reasons.

The marks that slash across her neck and face turn people away. But I see the beauty that lies beneath, feel a kinship to her pain.

I regret the way she found me—mugged and left for dead. I should walk away, follow the rules, but I can’t. I want to see her again. There’s only one problem.

My brother convinced her I’m gay.

I use that lie to my advantage, persuade her to be my pretend girlfriend, to help protect my fake-sexual identity from my judgmental family. But what starts as a shameless excuse to be near her leads to crossed lines and midnight confessions.

I’m not who I led her to believe. I’m sin wrapped in silk. Betrayal masked by beauty.

And she’s not the only one with scars…

REVIEW: The Lady Gets Lucky by Joanna Shupe

OUR REVIEW:

In The Lady Gets Lucky by Joanna Shupe we get the story of that scoundrel, Kit (you may remember him as one of the BFFs in the first book in this series) and Alice (also seen, though in a more minor way, in the first book) and their story does not disappoint. Kit, my new favorite rake, and Alice, my new favorite confidence woman (underneath her shy demeanor) undertake the all important task teaching/learning how to seduce a man to become Alice's husband. Why is it all important? Exhibit A: see her mother. Exhibit B: see women's prospects for independence in the Gilded Age. Exhibit C: see Exhibit A.

The task they've undertaken means a lot of stealth, late night visits, forbidden topics and touching, and all around fun things that were off limits to women in high society at this time --- so obviously it was AWESOME to read and image all of this happening. The sneaking around, the discovery and exploration of each other, and the general premise were just so fun that I found myself smiling and/or swooning ...when I wasn't begging Joanna Shupe to relent and let them have each other already. Gahhhhhh. Can we officially call Joanna Shupe the queen of delayed gratification when it comes to her characters? If not, please direct me to who is.

Surprisingly to me, I really enjoyed the character of Alice. Why surprising? Normally I fancy a strong, confident heroine, but I really enjoyed the development of Alice from someone who could barely make eye contact to someone who exhibits a backbone of steel. I also enjoyed that even though Kit seemed to be this charming, mischievous scoundrel he had a lot more insecurity and depth than others gave him credit for.  Together, their stories were interesting and fun to read, especially because of the growth that they exhibited over the course of the novel.

I'm loving this series and am hopeful that there are many more novels in this universe.

REVIEW: The Temptation by Nikki Sloane

OUR REVIEW:

I've been so curious about Vance since I first got to know him in Royce and Marist's trilogy and his story in The Temptation did not disappoint. Vance was just as interesting as I hoped he would be; he had this mix of insecurity and bold confidence that made me want to know him more. He was also richer than god and knew how to spoil his girl--I mean what a fantasy.

Emery was a great counterpart to Vance. She was focused and spunky and always seemed to know when to hold back and when to step up--she was the epitome of fake it until you make it and did so so seamlessly that she blended right into the community of the filthy rich that Vance inhabits. Her background was unusual--I don't think I've ever 'met' a female safe cracker in a novel and as her motives became more clear, I liked her more and more.

So you have these two fun characters and then you have Nikki Sloane throw all sorts of hurdles--fake relationship, 90 days of abstinence (!!!), a missing friend, and family drama--and when you put it all together, it works. You find yourself unable to stop reading because...will they make it through the 90 days? will we get to the bottom of the friend? will there be any resolution to the family stuff?!! I joyfully devoured The Temptation and am selfishly hoping there's some way to get more out of this series.

The Temptation by Nikki Sloane is now live!

Vance Hale has everything. A ridiculous amount of money, an Ivy-league education, and a 1,000-watt smile that can charm the designer dress right off a girl.

He’s also going to have a future that includes me—whether he wants it or not.

I don’t care that he’s trying to reform his playboy ways, or that he made a bet to go 90 days without the touch of a woman. I’ve spent the last decade planning my revenge and I need a partner in crime. This gorgeous, cunning man should do fine.

So, we strike a deal. I’ll help get him across the finish line and he’ll bring me into his world among the Cape Hill elite. Our relationship may be fake, but our chemistry is shockingly real. One innocent kiss and I’m struggling to hold up my end of the bargain.

Wanting him wasn’t part of the plan when everything else I desire is within my grasp. The only problem? Neither of us is any good at resisting temptation.

REVIEW: Mafia Queen by C.D. Reiss

MAFIA QUEEN (The DiLustro Arrangement #3) by CD Reiss
  Release Date: October 12th
  Genre/Trope: Arranged Marriage/Mafia Romance

MAFIA QUEEN from New York Times bestselling author CD Reiss is now available!

OUR REVIEW:

The ending of Mafia King had me DYING to read Mafia Queen, so the instant this baby downloaded on my Kindle, I was on hiatus from my real life so that I could find out what in the world was going to happen with Violetta and Santino.

This third and final book in the trilogy started off just as excitingly as the previous book ended. There was no wait, no long exposition, no stringing us along. NOPE. We were in it from the start and I feel like I didn't really take a full breath until I reached the end.

Because it's so action packed, I'm not going to talk plot points in Mafia Queen, instead I want to focus on what a badass couple Violetta and Santino are. I loved the power dynamic within and between the two of them and I also loved how that power played out in their 'family'. I enjoyed seeing Violetta start to inhabit her power and own her space in a way that was honest and commanding; her evolution was gratifying and relatable in her struggle to grasp how to wield her power. I also enjoyed how Santino viewed her--his love and respect for her, especially after how they started out, was exactly how I wanted him to view and treat her.

As with the previous novels in this series, and many of Reiss's novels, the steam factor was high, the prose was stripped down to its spare parts, and the balance between exposition and dialogue was perfect. This entire series kept me on the edge of my seat and while I'm sad to see it end, I'm so very satisfied with how it all played out. I'm eager to see the spin off of this series and where it will take us.

Blurb: What doesn’t kill you makes you a killer. Santino DiLustro changed me. You can’t spend time in bed with the devil without getting addicted to the heat. Before him, I was a girl. Innocent and weak. Now, I’m a woman. A fighter. A killer. I’ll burn the world down for him. Shatter the sky. But I will not break. No. I will rise up and destroy whoever dares to threaten what my king has built, because I am forever his queen.

About the Author: CD Reiss has a long history of aimlessly moving from place to place. She finally settled in Los Angeles where she earned a master’s degree in cinematic writing from USC. After graduation, she ultimately failed to have one line of dialog put on film, but stayed in Hollywood out of spite. Since screenwriting was going nowhere, she switched to novels. Soon after, luck arrived with a complete set of baggage. She now has over two dozen titles under her belt. Two of those are NY Times Bestsellers and a handful more are USA Today bestsellers. Her audiobooks have won APA Audie Awards and Earphones Awards, swelling her ego to an inhuman size. She lives with her family, two cats and her long-suffering husband in a small Hollywood house that’s been outfitted with huge, ego-sized doorways.
