KRLongShotBookCover5x8_MEDIUM

OUR REVIEW:

I think this book tried to kill me.
No joke.
I don't think I've felt my heart racing so hard in a very long time. And the cherry on top? I went to sleep at a critical point in the novel (hence the racing heart) and woke up the next morning with my heart still racing.

When my heart wasn't racing, it was raging.
The anger and horror and hurt?
It was intense. I was white knuckling my way through quite a portion of the reading and my white knuckles were a direct result from me wanting to reach into the words and hurt one particular character over and over again.

But this is Kennedy Ryan, right?
So when my heart wasn't racing or raging, it was full of hope and love.
With August, Kennedy made a man who was perfectly imperfect. He had all the reactions I'd want him to have or expect him to have. His restraint was laudable and when his emotions could not be contained, he handled things like I wanted him to handle things. Kennedy made a man that I could fall in love with over and over again.

And with Iris, Kennedy created a woman who was strong even when she didn't feel like she was. Her drive and ambition were so huge. Her personality felt huge. To see someone attempt to crush her to nothingness felt impossible. Infuriating. And I felt so helpless and angry and gahhhhhh. But her Phoenix-like rise was so rewarding and gratifying that it made the horror inflicted that much more rewarding and gratifying.

In every novel, Kennedy Ryan pushes my buttons. She asks me to think, reflect, question, observe. In the evolution of her writing, I thought she was at her strongest--what could top Grip?! I thought wrong. Long Shot just goes to show you that Kennedy Ryan is tackling impossibly challenging and nuanced issues and she's not going to hold anything back. Her writing is stronger than ever and has me wondering just what she's going to give me next. Hopefully, my heart will remain intact.

REVIEW: Recovered by Jay Crownover

The road to recovery is full of twists and turns no matter who is in the driver’s seat.

From New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Jay Crownover comes a standalone romance with a hero sure to keep readers up long into the night. Check out the review below and pick up your copy of RECOVERED for just $.99 through release week only!

OUR REVIEW:

If you're following Jay crownover's newsletter, Recovered will be familiar to you--it's just the polished version. If you didn't read it via the monthly chapters, now is your chance to fall in love with Cable and Affton's story.

While not as angsty as one might suspect from the synopsis, it'll definitely sweep you up in the emotion of their story. Both of these characters have a history riddled with sadness and pain but it's their choices and struggles that are lined with inklings of hope that keep this novel from being heartbreaking. Of course in order to get to that hope, you have to witness their anger and hurt and pain--all emotions that read as very heartfelt and honest, never overly dramatized or out of tune with what was happening. And all of that made the last bit of this novel so very sweet and fulfilling.

As always with Jay Crownover novels, I can't help but want to know more about her secondary characters and Emilio seems especially interesting to me. So here's to hoping that one day he has a story that only Jay Crownover can tell.

It was hate at first sight......

Affton

I hated Cable James McCaffrey.

He was entitled, spoiled, a user…and an addict.

He was out of control and didn’t bother trying to hide it.

He had everything anyone could want but still seemed miserable and lost.

Every move he made, every mistake he stumbled his way through, rubbed me the wrong way. However, I couldn’t stop myself from trying to save him from himself when no one else would. In the sweltering heat of the summer, Cable taught me that having it all means nothing if you can’t have the one thing you want more than anything else.

Cable

I was obsessed with Affton Reed.

She was rigid, uptight, and no fun. There was something about her innate goodness that called to me.

She acted like she was above all the normal faults and failures that clung to the rest of us like the scent of smoke after a fire.

I was infatuated with her, but that didn’t stop me from acting like she didn’t exist.

In the scorching heat of summer, Affton taught me that there is always a way back from the brink of despair. She showed me that the trick to having it all was realizing that it was already there, in my hands. All I had to do was hold onto it.

The road to recovery is full of twists and turns no matter who is in the driver’s seat.

REVIEW: The Swedish Prince by Karina Halle

The-Swedish-Prince-SBPRBT.jpg
The Swedish Prince by Karina Halle
Publication Date: March 22nd, 2018
Genre: Contemporary Romance

OUR REVIEW:

Shel: I absolutely love that Karina Halle is always trying new things, giving us new stories and characters, and showing us all the various facets of her writing. I love that I thought I had an idea of how The Swedish Prince would go and found that I was really surprised and happy at how wrong I was. This novel was a modern day fairy tale with nods to all the features we've come to recognize in the classics: a handsome prince, a strong and resilient heroine, family and drama and sometimes family drama, and lots of fun helpers to get these two together along the way. Maggie and Viktor are such a wonderful pair to read--passionate and funny and fun and such great partners for each other.

Shel: Additionally, Halle's attention to detail in bringing the various locales to life on the page is always something that draws me in and never fails to have me adding her settings to my travel bucket list (who wants to take me to Sweden?!). It's also her ability to tap into her characters' hearts and minds producing such poignant and thoughtful lines that will always keep me trying her latest works.

Shel: This fun, sexed up, heartfelt modern day Cinderella story is the perfect weekend romance to escape into and I'm selfishly hoping Pike or a certain Norwegian gets a book or two out of this too!

Swedish Prince AMAZON (2)
I never believed in fairy-tales.
Never held out for Prince Charming.
Growing up poor in small-town California as the oldest of six siblings, I knew I would never ride off into the sunset with anyone. That was even more apparent when a senseless tragedy took the lives of my parents, forcing me to become the sole guardian of our dysfunctional household at the mere age of twenty-three.
Then a fateful encounter literally brought Prince Charming to my dusty doorstep.
At first I thought Viktor was just your average businessman passing through, albeit obscenely handsome, six-foot-five, blue-eyed, and mysteriously rich.
But soon I discovered the truth behind Viktor’s façade.
Beneath his quiet, enigmatic gaze and cocky charm, is a man who is running away from who he really is. A role he’d rather not fulfill.
He is Viktor of House Nordin, His Royal Highness, The Crown Prince of Sweden.
Yet uncovering Viktor’s secret was only the first step.
I didn’t expect to fall in love with him.
I didn’t expect to have my whole life turned upside down.
When you’re from two different worlds, can your hearts meet somewhere in the middle?
Or do happily-ever-afters only exist in fairy-tales?
The Swedish Prince is a standalone romance inspired by Roman Holiday.

Excerpt:
“Do you need any help?” Callum asks Viktor as he sorts things.
Callum has never asked to help me in the kitchen before.
Viktor smiles at him appreciatively and I’m aware of how charmed they are of each other. It warms my heart.
“Well let’s see,” Viktor says and takes off his suit jacket, hanging it on the back of the chair, and starts rolling up his sleeves. His tanned, muscled forearms pop against the white fabric as he folds it around his elbow. Hot damn. Forget about warming my heart, this is warming up other places.
“What are you good at Callum?” he asks.
Callum taps his finger against his chin in thought. “Math.”
“That’s great. I meant in the kitchen.”
“Slicing things,” he says with a big smile. “Or stabbing things.” Evil giggle.
Viktor’s eyes widen briefly. “Okay, so we’ll keep you away from the knives.” He looks at me for help.
I shrug. “Beats me, he’s never wanted to help me in the kitchen.”
“Because you’re not James Bond,” Callum says.
“Well sorrrrrry,” I tell him. I can’t blame the kid. Viktor in his suit in our kitchen is probably the most exciting thing to ever happen to us.
“Have you ever grated parmesan, Callum?” Viktor asks him while rummaging through the drawers and finding the cheese grater. He raises it up triumphantly while I silently shake my head, no way. A cheese grater is just a knife with scales.
“Nevermind,” Viktor says quickly, placing the cheese grater far away from him. “How about you just sit there and sing me songs. I rather liked your rendition of Dancing Queen.”
Oh god. Now that I know “Dancing Queen” was sung to his actual mother the night before she became queen, by ABBA themselves, Callum’s version seems even more crude.
“I forgot the lyrics,” Callum says with a shrug. “But I can rap.” He clears his throat like he’s about to sing an opera. “I like big poops and I cannot lie.”
I roll my eyes and give Viktor a warning look. He asked for this.
“Can I help with anything?” I ask coming around the table beside him.
“An apron would be great,” he says. His hands are already floured from handling the fresh pasta so I grab an apron hanging in the pantry – one that has chickens all over it, my mother was obsessed with chickens – and bring it over to him.
We smile at each other as he lowers his head so I can slip the top strap over his neck. With his head at my height, I take a moment to run my hands through his hair under the guise of fixing it.
My god. This is what heaven feels like. His hair is so thick and lush and silky, the ultimate sensory experience. I get a whiff of his shampoo, something woodsy and herbal that makes me want to drool. How I want nothing more than to just grab a few strands between my fingers and give it a sharp tug. I want to see the easy-going expression on his face become something raw and wild.
He sneaks a glance up at me and I realize how inappropriate I must be touching him like this.
“Your hair was a little messed,” I say quietly, then I go behind him and tie the straps around his lower back. Damn, if Callum wasn’t sitting right there and watching this whole scene, I’d start running my hands up and down his back, feeling every hard, taut muscle, and then climb him like a jungle gym. He’s just so tall, his shoulders so broad and wide, that I feel like I take up no space at all next to him, like Viktor commands every atom in the room when he’s around.
But Callum is watching, very intently I might add, and whatever intimacy I had conjured up by putting an apron vanishes.

REVIEW: Stone by Max Monroe

OUR THOUGHTS:

Many of us associate Max Monroe with hilarious romantic comedy and while there are definitely some funny lines, Stone is more angsty drama than anything else. It's what I refer to as the set up novel in a trilogy. Lots of background about Levi, Ivy and the town there in ...and hints of things to come. We get to see that Levi has some serious, serious depression and anxiety when it comes to the retelling of the story of his town. We see that Ivy is amazing and down to earth and as kind as she is sassy. And we get to see that this small town plays a definite role in their story--from the secondary characters to the location, it's like a character in and of itself.

Thinking of the second novel, I have some thoughts on what our plot twist may be and I can't wait to see if I'm right! In the meantime it'll be interesting to see how Levi makes up his dickish ways in the next novel.

COVER REVEAL: Lilith by Willow Aster

For me the word is exactly what Lilith feels about herself ... it's more than her profession, it's her lack of self-worth, her shame, and her weariness with the lot she's been given. It's the word that's been stamped across her chest and what she's carried her whole life. The word that I've never liked just felt right, but I get how people who can't see inside my head might not appreciate being blasted with the word. There's only one other title I can accept and that is ... Lilith. Because really, it's always been about her and I want to keep it that way.

Not your typical prostitute ... this is a story of unconditional love.
“I need a reason to exist.”
Beautiful, intelligent, independent, strong-willed, wealthy—Lilith Fontenot seems by all appearances, to have it all. But that’s not how the highest paid prostitute in New Orleans sees herself.
A stain on society. A scourge. A waste. Outsider. Prisoner…
Any idyllic dream of the normal life she may have once imagined, Lilith buried long ago. Her only plan now is survival.
But mob boss Nico Santelli and community center owner Soti Christos have not given up on Lilith. Each has his own very specific, very opposing, plans for her, and neither will rest until it becomes a reality.
LILITH is a singularly bracing take on an ancient tale of tireless love, betrayal, and the possibility of redemption.

I take a sudden deep breath and my breasts brush against his chest. The contact surprises us both. I do it again, intentionally this time, trying to gain control in the only way I know how. His neck flushes and he takes a step back. I enjoy the rush it gives me, knowing that I affect him too. “Hey, would you like to come around the corner with me to—” I swallow my surprise and shake my head, holding my hand up before he says anything else. “Please,” he says louder. “What’s your name?” “I am Sotirios … Soti.” “Soti, what makes you think you know anything about me?” He tries to make eye contact, but I focus on a spot just past his left ear. “I just want to help you…” His words trail off. The wind blows my hair forward, a sheet of black coming between us until I smooth the long strands down on either side. I gaze down the street and see a blurry little girl with black hair down to her waist in middle school, standing shy and hopeful in front of a group of girls. “We know what you are,” they said. They hurled spit and names on her and she stood there, taking it, until the teacher came and helped her. Help only got me so far. “You listen to me, okay?” I say so softly he leans in to hear me. “I was born for this.” When my eyes finally land on his again, I know his face will haunt me forever. He looks as bleak as I feel. I clear my throat. “Now, if you’ll excuse us.” With that, I loop my hand through the arm of my next income source, calculating how I can get the most money out of him for the least amount of time. It takes every ounce of willpower I own to not look Soti’s way one more time. Once we round the corner and I know he’s out of sight, all the adrenaline leaves my body, and I’m actually glad to have someone to hold onto. I avoid my reflection as we walk back to the house. I don’t want to know what the rest of the world sees when they look at me.
Willow Aster is the author of True Love Story, In the Fields, Maybe Maby, Fade to Red, and the upcoming release, Whore. Willow loves nothing more than writing the day away—anywhere will do. Her husband and two children graciously put up with her endless daydreaming and make fun of her for reading while cooking.

REVIEW+ GIVEAWAY: A Marriage of Inconvenience by Penny Reid

MOI BT BANNER.jpg

Marriage of Inconvenience, an all new romantic comedy standalone in the USA Today bestselling, Knitting in the City Series by Penny Reid, is available NOW!

MOI copy

OUR REVIEW:

I haven't wiped the grin off my face since I finished reading A Marriage of Inconvenience; it was the perfect antidote to my melancholy mood. Dan, one of our main characters, has got to be one of the funniest and sweetest characters I've ever read. His banter with anyone he comes across had me laugh until I shook whatever I was sitting on. He has the most unique ways to use fuck that I've come across--so be forewarned if you're hypersensitive to that word (I personally loved it. So hilarious). I also loved how thoughtful he was when it came to his mother and to Kat.

Speaking of Kat, our other main character, I adored her and all of her quirks. She was also so funny and thoughtful. I think what I especially enjoyed was her drive. She had so much to juggle at all times and she did it, willingly. She never came off as woe is me, or tortured by the life she led, instead she looked at what she had to do and what she wanted to do and methodically went after it. I really enjoyed how she was portrayed--strong and thoughtful and articulate and, of course, flawed, as we all are.

Together these two made me laugh and swoon. I think this may be my favorite Penny Reid book (though I think I say this with every new book of hers).

And that epilogue, yo! I wasn't prepared! So good! I feel like I need to reread it because I'm fairly certain I missed details. So good.

Loved this one and think you will too.

SYNOPSIS:

There are three things you need to know about Kat Tanner (aka Kathleen Tyson. . . and yes, she is *that* Kathleen Tyson): 1) She’s determined to make good decisions, 2) She must get married ASAP, and 3) She knows how to knit.
Being a billionaire heiress isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. In fact, it sucks. Determined to live a quiet life, Kat Tanner changed her identity years ago and eschewed her family’s legacy. But now, Kat’s silver spoon past has finally caught up with her, and so have her youthful mistakes. To avoid imminent disaster, she must marry immediately; it is essential that the person she chooses have no romantic feelings for her whatsoever and be completely trustworthy.
Fortunately, she knows exactly who to ask. Dan O’Malley checks all the boxes: single, romantically indifferent to her, completely trustworthy. Sure, she might have a wee little crush on Dan the Security Man, but with clear rules, expectations, and a legally binding contract, Kat is certain she can make it through this debacle with her sanity—and heart—all in one piece.
Except, what happens when Dan O’Malley isn’t as indifferent—or as trustworthy—as she thought?

Excerpt:

Staring at his chin, because I couldn’t quite lift my eyes any higher, I cleared my throat. “Should we get ready for bed?” “Sure,” he said, his voice a rumble. Dan’s eyes were on me, I felt the weight of them. My hands came to the hem of my skirt and I hesitated, feeling winded for some reason. Sneaking a glance at him, I immediately wished I hadn’t. His gaze was watchful, but it was also unmistakably hot in a way that seemed at once both avaricious and accusatory. The vice tightened around my lungs. Kiss him! Just freaking kiss him! You want numbered steps? Fine. You kiss him- check. He kisses you back- check. Then you make out- check. Check the boxes. I licked my lips, balling my hands into fists at my sides again, preparing to follow my hasty list. But then he said, “Undress me.” My breath caught. On instinct, my eyes lifted and collided with his in much the same way our bodies had collided at the top of the stairs just moments ago. Jarring. Startling. Thrilling. This time I couldn’t look away because this time I was falling. He made no move to catch me. “What? What did you say?” His eyes narrowed, which served only to increase the intensity of his gaze from smolder to inferno. “Take my clothes off.” I stared at him, licking my lips again, and shaking my head. That wasn’t one of my steps. Lifting my chin, I moved to kiss him. He leaned to the side, evading me even as his eyes dropped to my mouth. “Take off my shirt and I’ll give you a kiss.” He’d used his naughty-secret voice. An explosion of heat erupted in my belly, and now I was hot all over. I couldn’t figure out if the heat was embarrassment or arousal or both. He didn’t give me a chance to figure it out. His hands lifted and he undid his cuffs; then they moved to the top button of his shirt. “You better take over,” he said darkly, “or else you’re not getting that kiss.” LIVE01

About the Author:
Jodi Ellen Malpas wrote her debut series, The This Man Trilogy, in secret, worried about what people might think if they knew what her imagination was capable of. She was shocked herself. But she finally found the courage to unleash her creative streak and self-published THIS MAN – the first book of the This Man Trilogy – in October 2012. She took a chance on the story with a hero who soon became one of modern day fictions most prolific alpha male characters. Jesse Ward – also affectionately known as The Lord of The Manor, sparked incredible reactions from women across the globe and catapulted Jodi into the world of women’s fiction.
Jodi went on to self-publish the second book in the trilogy, Beneath This Man in Jan 2013, just before Grand Central Publishing, part of the Hachette Book Group, picked up the popular trilogy and the unknown Jodi. The third book of the trilogy, This Man Confessed, took Jodi to the top of the bestsellers lists, earning her the proud title of #1 New York Times Bestselling Author. This Man has since been voted one of the top romance novels of all time. With so much love, enthusiasm and a thirst for her words from her readers, Jodi suddenly wasn’t afraid of her imagination anymore. She went on to write The One Night Trilogy with the delectable and mysterious Miller Hart, and stole the hearts of her readers once again. Her first stand-alone novel, THE PROTECTOR, released in September 2016 and has since been nominated for a Reviewers’ Choice Best Book Award. Jodi’s next stand-alone novel. THE FORBIDDEN, is set for release in August 2017. All seven of her published novels have hit the New York Times best sellers list – as well as the Sunday Times list and various international best seller lists. Her work is now published in over 24 languages across the world. Jodi was born and raised in the Midlands town of Northampton, England, where she lives with her two boys and a beagle. She is a self-professed daydreamer, a mojito addict, is famous for her obsession with Converse, and has a terrible weak spot for Alpha Males. Writing powerful love stories and creating addictive characters has become her passion – a passion she now shares with her devoted readers.

REVIEW:
Ketley Allison is back from a hiatus and she hit it out of the ballpark with To Have and To Hold.

We've always enjoyed her novels because they have such a nice mix of romance and suspense--she knows exactly how to have your turning the next page and keep you on your toes. To Have and To Hold elevated all of that a thousandfold. The suspense of trying to put all the pieces together--who took Emme and why--had me guessing until the very last 15% of the novel. I found myself trying to out-sleuth the sleuth.

In addition to the suspense aspects, she created a connection between Spence and Emme that not only drove the novel, it drove the characters to do almost superhuman things to try to end the nightmare of the kidnapping. My only wish is that we knew more about what, exactly, happened to Spence to push him to sever their ties. What the heck happened to him in his younger days that made him so protective of his heart?!

Ketley Allison's use of creep details and her understanding of how law and order work, combined with the suspenseful plot, has me eager to see what she'll write next.

BUY IT on Amazon.

SYNOPSIS:

He was my true love. Now, he's my only hope.

Spence was the one, my only free fall, my terrible heartache.

Me: shy, quiet, nervous.

Him: outgoing, intimidating, and wild, all the things I wasn't.

Such catastrophic connection couldn't last. We split apart--not separated, because that word is so gentle and we cracked in half--and I haven't seen him in two and a half years.

We aren't the same; we never were. I made it almost three years without him, I could make it longer.

I became, in one word, happy.

But then...

I was kidnapped.

TO HAVE AND TO HOLD is Ketley Allison's stunning new standalone novel that combines the heartwarming chance of finding lost love with the terrifying concept of being taken against your will. This thriller will heat you all the way through, then chill you to the bone.
