REVIEW: Between Hello and Goodbye by Emma Scott

OUR REVIEW:

Snatching up a new Emma Scott novel is an absolute no brainer for us. We know that we're going to have an absorbing, emotional read that we won't want to put down until we get to the last page and Between Hello and Goodbye was exactly that.

You may remember Faith from Someday, Someday, though she was more in the background. This novel is all about her and proving to all parties involved (her boss, herself, Asher, us) that she's more than what she's always appeared to be. From the time we meet her and then when Asher meets her, she's putting off the party girl, shallow vibe but it's very clear that she's so much more than that, if for no other reason than that she willingly took time off to figure some things out for herself. As her time in Hawaii and with Asher ticks by, we see her begin to see herself as the person she is underneath the party girl façade; her confidence and sense of self grows, in part because of the work she's doing but also because of the way Asher sees her. Speaking of Asher, this dude has some issues. Considering his history, it's all understandable but yeeesh, he's got some serious anxieties about letting go of some of the control and adult responsibilities he took on and never seemed to be able to shake off. In many ways those things work for him but sometimes the very things that seemed to save him, hurt him. I couldn't help but like him and his broodiness, though, because underneath his reluctance to letting yet one more person in, he was a true sweetie.

Faith and Asher hooked me from the beginning--their stories of grief and hurt, insecurities and responsibilities and their combined evolution into the characters we are left with at the end are what kept me glued to my kindle all day. At times emotional, other times snarky and fun, Between Hello and Goodbye was a great summer read.

From USA Today and Wall St. Journal bestselling author comes a brand-new contemporary romance—an angsty, emotional love story between a grumpy firefighter who thinks he has his life figured out and a beautiful ad exec whose life is anything but.

Between Hello and Goodbye by Emma Scott is now live!

She's a city girl in Seattle. He's a firefighter in a rainforest. This is never going to work...

Faith Benson isn't your emergency contact, she's the party-girl friend you call for a good time. The gal-pal who loves mimosas at brunch and martinis at Happy Hour. But her carefree lifestyle threatens her job at a top Seattle ad agency. There's no one better at landing big accounts (when she shows up) but her boss demands she take a leave of absence to get her head on straight.

Faith heads to the remote Hawaiian island of Kauai, far away from the vices that get her in trouble. A twisted ankle on Day One requires rescuing by a man who is vice personified--a gorgeous firefighter who awakens feelings in her heart she never knew existed.

Asher Mackey doesn't get involved with beautiful tourists beyond taking them to bed and then watching them leave his tiny island. He's devoted his life to the safety and care of everyone around him...except himself. Until he meets Faith Benson, the city girl whose vibrant, inner beauty shines a light on the dark corners of his life, showing him how safe—but empty—it truly is.

Despite their best efforts to keep their distance, Faith and Asher fall hard and fast, but there's an ocean between them. Both are building their lives on opposite sides of the Pacific while their feelings for each other grow more profound and undeniable by the day.

Something has to give.

When Asher receives devastating news, he and Faith have to decide once and for all to entrust their hearts fully to the other or return to their safe—but separate—worlds. Because neither can endure much longer, living somewhere between hello and goodbye.

Between Hello and Goodbye is a contemporary romance about love, loss, and experiencing life in all its facets. It deals with sensitive topics that may be triggering for some readers.

NEW REVIEW: The Last Piece of His Heart by Emma Scott

OUR REVIEW:

I've been curious about the story of Ronan and Shiloh since book one of The Lost Boys series--they always seemed a little chummy and I just knew their story had to be a good one (as all of the stories in this series have been) and I wasn't wrong.

The story of Ronan and Shiloh was absolutely agonizing to read...in the best way. The push and pull between them; the lust and denial and rejection and inability to stay away just built and built until Emma Scott finally relented and let them have each other. THANK GOD she did it when she did because I don't know how much longer I could've hung in there waiting for these two to get their shit together. Their collective story was a good one but their individual stories were powerful. Both of them had such sad family histories and while Shiloh had a great support system (Ronan, really did not), it didn't negate the sadness of her situation. I was completely emotionally invested by how hard both of them fought to have what they wanted and found myself tearful when things felt like they were falling apart, right when things were supposed to be going so right. The closer I got to the ending the more I felt hopeful and desperate for the happily ever after I knew was coming and when it came? The happiness and relief I felt were almost palpable.

In addition to Ronan and Shiloh, seeing Miller and Holden and their significant others was a nice finishing touch..a nice farewell to the series. While I'd love to see Emma Scott revisit them all one day, I also felt the ending was really well done and it felt finished. I really enjoyed this entire series, even when it killed me, sometimes, to read it. I have no idea what Emma Scott is doing next but I know I will be eager to read it when it's time.

From USA Today and Wall St. Journal bestselling author, Emma Scott, comes the third and final novel in the Lost Boys series--a gritty, angsty love story about two lost souls searching for their place in the world, and what it means to be truly found.

The Last Piece of His Heart by Emma Scott is now live!

At Santa Cruz Central High School, they called them the misfits, the outcasts, the weirdos. But most of us knew them as the Lost Boys...

Ronan Wentz has been to hell and back, and he carries the scars to prove it. Worse, the blood of a monster runs through his veins. After ten years in foster care, eighteen-year-old Ronan is finally reunited with family. His uncle gives him a roof over his head and puts him to work, managing a shabby apartment complex in Santa Cruz, California.

But a second chance is still a second chance. Ronan becomes a solitary hunter, a vigilante, walking the streets at night to keep the nightmares at bay. If he can use the anger burning in his tainted blood to protect instead of hurt, maybe then he'll find the absolution he seeks.

Then he meets Shiloh.

Shiloh Barrera looks like she has it all together. Smart, ambitious and full of artistic creativity she channels into making beautiful one-of-kind jewelry. But Shiloh's cool, capable demeanor is all a front. Her demons drive her to succeed as much as her ambition. To prove her worth to the mother who can't stand to look at her, and who's harboring secrets of her own.

When Shiloh and Ronan meet, the physical attraction is instant and scorching. Neither believe it will last. Falling in love is an impossible pipe dream saved for those less shattered and damaged than they are.

But as hard as they try to resist, the growing feelings between them seem inevitable... until one terrible night destroys Shiloh's dreams and Ronan's future. When the smoke clears, and the rubble settles, they'll have to choose - do their pasts determine their future, or can they build a new one from the broken pieces of their hearts?

REVIEW: When You Come Back To Me by Emma Scott

OUR REVIEW:

Emma FREAKING Scott, how dare you make me feel so much in this novel. I've cried tears of sorrow and joy and my heart is just so full. This series, Lost Boys, is pure unadulterated YA/NA angst and really captures the emotional roller coaster of these years.

In the case of When You Come Back to Me, Holden and River are two of the most infuriating and wonderful characters I've read in a while. Their story is one of constant push and pull and even when you want to throw the novel across the room because you cannot take one more second of what's going to happen next, you cannot stay away from it. When I wasn't reading this novel, I was thinking about it and dying to get back to it. Without going into spoiler territory, I'll just say that both of them have such heart wrenching tragedies to grapple with and to see how they manage it and their attraction and love for each other was gripping.

We have one more novel to go--Ronan's novel--and from the little hints dropped I can tell it's going to be a doozy and I can't wait for it. In the meantime, if you're looking for two fantastic, emotional novels, the first two books in this series are fantastic reads.

From USA Today bestselling author comes the second book in the Lost Boys series of interconnected standalones. Holden and River's emotional and heart-wrenching journey to love, redemption, and their happy ever after.

When You Come Back To Me by Emma Scott is now live!

At Santa Cruz Central High School, they called them the misfits, the outcasts, the weirdos. But most of us knew them as the Lost Boys...

Holden Parish survived his parents' horrific attempts to make him "the perfect son." After a year's stint in a Swiss sanitarium to recover, he has vowed to never let anything--or anyone--trap him again. Brilliant but broken, he seeks refuge behind alcohol, meaningless sex, and uses his wicked sense of humor to keep people away. He only has to ride out one year in the coastal town of Santa Cruz with his aunt and uncle before he inherits his billions and can make his escape. Disappear.

Falling in love is not in the plans.

River Whitmore. Star quarterback of the Central High football team, Prom King, Mr. Popular, ladies' man. He leads the perfect life...except it's all a lie. His father has River's future in the NFL all planned out, while River's dream is to run the family business in the town that he loves. But his mother's illness is tearing the family apart and River is becoming the glue that holds them together. How can he break his father's heart when it's already shattering?

River's carefully-crafted façade explodes when he meets Holden Parish. A guy who dresses in coats and scarves year-round, drinks expensive vodka, and spends his free time breaking into houses for the fun of it. They're complete opposites. River seeks a quiet life, away from the spotlight. Holden would rather have dental surgery than settle down.

Holden's demons and River's responsibilities threaten to keep them apart, while their undeniable attraction crashes them together again and again, growing into something deep and real no matter how they resist.

Until one terrible night changes everything.

Excerpt

On the stage, Miller spoke into the mic in a low, almost shy voice. “Hey, my name is

Miller Stratton. I’m going to play a song by Coldplay. It’s called ‘Fix You.’”

I let my gaze slide to Holden, studying the contours of his profile—his chiseled jaw and

cheekbones, strong nose, full lips. He swallowed, and I watched the movement of his Adam’s

apple. Thoroughly masculine. Nothing feminine about it.

“Can I help you?” he whispered, eyes forward.

“It sucks not talking to you,” I said, as Miller strummed the first chords of the song. “I

don’t know why. You’re arrogant as fuck.”

“Fair. You’re a grilled cheese sandwich.”

I snorted. “A what?”

“Shh,” Holden said. “Listen. This is our song.”

Our song. Nothing was ours. There was no us. But Miller sang that if you never try you’ll

never know, and the words pierced me like arrows.

I took my hand out of my pocket and let it hang by my side again. Again, my skin

brushed Holden’s, sending shards of heat dancing up my arm while Miller sang about lights that

ignite your bones.

I looked at Holden and he looked at me.

Without letting myself think, I slipped my fingers around the side of his hand and slid my

palm against his. He gasped slightly—a small intake of breath only I heard in the darkened

auditorium. Then he let his hand settle into mine. Another heartbeat, and our fingers laced

together.

“And I will try,” Miller sang, his rich voice hovering in the air in that silent auditorium.

“To fix you.”

A short silence fell before the crowd erupted in thunderous cheers, unlike anything I’ve

ever heard. Miller’s version of the song was unlike anything I’d ever heard either, as if he were

singing directly to me. To us.

Because it’s our song.

Under the cover of applause, I let go of Holden’s hand and tugged the cuff of his coat.

“Let’s go.”

I left without looking back but heard Holden’s footfalls following. Warning bells clanged

in my head but were drowned in the thrashing beat of my heart that felt as it were trying to break

free of its prison like it had at the pool. Only this time I was stone cold sober. No excuses.

I pushed open the door next to the auditorium—the back area of the band room that was

for instrument storage. Huge basses loomed in dimness, and drums of all sizes and styles lined

the walls.

Holden followed me in and shut the door behind him. “Hello, friend.”

“I put in my college applications,” I said as he approached me in the darkness. “I’m going

away to Texas or maybe Alabama this summer.”

“Establishing the rules, are you?” he drawled, though his voice was thick and tinged with

nerves.

I swallowed hard. “Nothing’s changed. Nothing can change.”

“I told you,” Holden said, in front of me now. “I’ll never ask you for anything. I don’t

have anything to give. Except this.”

I wanted to tell him that wasn’t true, that I was the one who had nothing to offer. I

shouldn’t have led us here. I should walk out, but his goddamn voice, the scent of him, his

presence was overwhelming. My hands itched to touch him, to grab him and…

Kiss him?

My first kiss with a guy. It seemed as if I’d been waiting a lifetime for it and yet the

moment was rushing at me like a speeding train.

“Stop thinking, River,” Holden whispered. “We’re here. Right now.” He leaned in.

“What are you going to do?”

REVIEW: The Girl in the Love Song by Emma Scott

OUR REVIEW:
The Girl in the Love Song was my beach companion this week which meant that it had to be compelling to be able to compete with all of the fun going on around me. SHORT STORY: it was. It was one of those reads that you can tell by the first chapter that you're not going to want to put it down and you aren't really going to want it to end, either.

When I started reading, I found myself charmed by Violet and curious about Miller. The more I got to "know" them, the more I began to visualize them and the words just came alive--it felt like a teen drama playing out before my eyes: she was so focused, he was so broody; he was so in love with her, she was so insistent that they could only be friends. It was sweet and agonizing. As the years progressed, the angst built. The bullies and the cool kids, the parties and the dances, the fights and the games they all played felt like a modern day John Hughes movie. I was completely entertained.

Then, all hell broke loose and, as it tends to happen during senior year, really tough life altering decisions changed the course of their lives and it was at this point that I really wanted more. I was so invested in what was going on with Violet and Miller that the last 15-20% flew by and I really wanted it to slow down. If I'm being honest, and I am, I could've probably used another several thousand words of story--some gaps filled in. The ending happened in warp speed and I had so many questions. My hope is that as the other Lost Boys get their stories, some of my questions will be answered. Until then, I know I'll be thinking about all of these new characters and wondering what they're up to and whose story we'll get next.

At Santa Cruz Central High School, they called them the misfits, the outcasts, the weirdos. But most of us knew them as the Lost Boys…

…

The Girl in the Love Song, book one in the Lost Boys, an interconnected coming-of-age series of standalones, from USA Today bestselling author Emma Scott, is live!

Miller Stratton is a survivor. After a harrowing childhood of poverty, he will do anything it takes to find security for himself and his mom. He’s putting all his hopes and dreams in the fragile frame of his guitar and the beauty he creates with its strings and his soulful voice.

Until Violet.

No one expects to meet the love of their life at age thirteen. But the spunky rich girl steals Miller’s heart and refuses to give it back.

Violet McNamara’s life hasn’t been as simple as it looks. Her picture-perfect family is not so perfect after all. Her best friend Miller is her one constant and she is determined not to ruin their friendship with romantic complications.

But the heart wants what it wants. As Miller’s star begins to rise to stratospheric heights, what will it take for Violet to realize that she’s the girl in all of his love songs?

The Girl in the Love Song features two original songs written by Emma herself.

NEW REVIEW: Someday, Someday by Emma Scott

How long would you wait for true love?

Copy of SDSDFINAL Ebook (3) (1) (1).jpg

OUR REVIEW:

When I think of Emma Scott romances, I think about how I know I'm going to get a read that really drills down deep into the emotional head space of her characters. I know that I'm going to feel a sorta of melancholic nostalgia in sepia tone. Does that even make sense? It's that sense of warmth and soft edges and curiosity about what you're looking at/reading that keeps you thinking about long after you've walked away from it. No matter what Emma Scott writes, I have that sense of warmth and soft edges and emotional fulfillment when I've put the novel down.

At first it's really Max who provides a lot of the warmth and softness in Someday, Someday; he has such a kindness and gentleness that comes off just right--not too soft, not too gentle, and he definitely takes no crap from anyone. He's easy to love. Silas, on the other hand, is chilly and stand offish and broody and tortured and the more you get to know him, the more you feel for him, want to fight for him. As the story of how's become the hard-nosed Silas is revealed, and the more he allows himself to relinquish some of the ways he's punished himself, the more you find yourself falling for him too. I guess what I'm saying is that it was easy to fall under the spell of Max but falling for Silas was equally rewarding. Somehow seeing those tough guys melt a little has a way of melting us all, doesn't it? I think I say this about all? of her novels--I really enjoyed meeting them and knowing them and now I find myself thinking about them days after reading their story.

In Someday, Someday Emma Scott takes on a lot with Max and Silas--addiction, alienation from family, and company corruption-- and in any other authors hands it may have been too much; but in her hands these major, heavy topics are given the space to be developed and woven into narratives that address each major plot point and work together seamlessly.

This was not what I'd call an easy read. The past lives of Max and Silas are ones that I can't imagine having either one of my children live through and yet I know some parents, even in the more enlightened age of 2019, willingly allow or participate in. It's intolerable and terrible and hateful. So even though it was hard to read, I think it was important to read and to honor those who've lived through it and are sharing their stories; and for those who haven't, that we honor them by doing better. It's for this reason, and many more, that I appreciate that Emma Scott continues to create characters who not only give us something to think about but also give us hope that better days can come.

Max Kaufman was kicked out of his home as a teen and his life has been an uphill battle ever since. From addiction and living on the streets, to recovery and putting himself through nursing school, he’s spent the last ten years rebuilding his shattered sense of self. Now he’s taken a job as a private caretaker to Edward Marsh III, the president and CEO of one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. Max soon learns Marsh’s multi-billion-dollar empire is a gold and diamond-encrusted web of secrets and lies.
The longer Max works and lives with the Marsh family, the tighter the secrets tangle around him. And his heart—that he’s worked so hard to protect—falls straight into the hands of the distant, cold, and beautiful son of a dynasty…
Silas Marsh is set to inherit the family fortune, but his father is determined his heir be the “perfect” son. Before Silas can take over the company and end its shady business practices, he must prove himself worthy…and deny his true nature.
Silas must choose: stand up to his father by being true to himself and his undeniable feelings for Max. Or pretend to be someone he is not in order to inherit everything. Even if it means sacrificing a chance at happiness and real love.
