REVIEW: Fearless by Lauren Gilley

OUR REVIEW:

A fellow bookish friend strongly recommended Fearless and I now must pay it forward. Here's a brief list of reasons to read it:

1. It's well written and plotted...and sub-plotted.
2. The characters and their plights are interesting.
3. Lauren Gilley writes the south accurately and descriptively
4. It's both an epic romance and an odyssey of sorts.
5. Features a motorcycle club.
6. Has multiple povs.
7. Is nice and long and ties up all loose ends of the characters featured.
8. Has many other books in the series.

This just barely scratches the surface of why I wanted to speed read it and also never finish it. I should also note that as I was reading, I often thought that Kristin Ashley fans would really enjoy this novel, too.

Grab this fantastic novel and plan to surrender yourself to the Lean Dogs and all things Lauren Gilley.

Synopsis:

From the author of the Walker Series comes a family drama like no other, a sprawling character epic, a forbidden love story full of angst, adventure, heartbreak, and second chances. Welcome to the mother chapter of the Lean Dogs Motorcycle Club; meet the girl raised by outlaws, and the fearsome man who will always hold her heart.

Ava Teague left for college with a busted heart and a deeply ingrained love for her biker family. She returns home to Knoxville for grad school, just in time for her father to accept the burden of president…and for Mercy Lécuyer to roll back into town, looking to patch into the Tennessee chapter once more. She’ll steer clear of him, she tells herself. She has a new life, a new boyfriend, and a new outlook. But she can’t shake her DNA. And maybe she doesn’t want to.

Felix Lécuyer left the swamps of Louisiana for a life as an outlaw biker named Mercy, but it was his family, and the retribution he dealt because of it, that made him famous within the club. Fourteen years ago he fled New Orleans for Knoxville, to become an extractor and bodyguard within the mother chapter, guarding Ghost Teague’s family, becoming a constant companion to little Ava. When she was seventeen, he finally crossed the line. Now she’s twenty-two, and he’s back in town as an old nemesis rears its ugly head, and puts the entire club in danger. The fate of the club is uncertain, but Mercy has no doubts about his heart; it still belongs to Ava.

Now available as a complete novel, Fearless launches a thrilling new series about the Lean Dogs of Tennessee, and the women tough enough to love them. Look for Book II, Price of Angels, coming March 2015.

REVIEW: Even Money by Alessandra Torre

Even Money
By Alessandra Torre
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Cover Design: Najla Qamber Designs

Our Review:
Shel: I love it when Court reads ahead of me because she gets me all sorts of excited about whatever we're reading and that's exactly what happened with Even Money by Alessandra Torre.  Court: Yeah, I was all like girrrrrl, you gon' love this book!

Shel: Within minutes of reading I felt like this was old school Alessandra Torre, didn't you, Court?! The setting (out west in Las Vegas), the characters (a powerful older man, a younger woman not yet established, and the push and pull of their attraction), the sense of danger and of something being forbidden? it threw me back to the Innocence Series and I loved every second of it.  Even with all the things that brought me back to the debut series of Alessandra Torre, there was so much to this novel that also made it feel different too. The secondary characters--Ian, Gwen, Robert, and Claudia + Lance and Rick--all added interesting plot points and conflicts and that ending?! That ending has me ready for the middle of June! We have many predictions, speculations, and questions that have us very eager to see how in the heck Alessandra Torre will wrap up all the loose ends. Court: She quickly set up a world that I felt like these were some of my friends. And I hurt with them. And felt protective of Bell with Lance and Rick...and hated some characters immediately (you'll see...) and yes...it brought back all of the angst and unknown that we got in the Innocence Series and I loved the high-stakes-feelings of these underground gambling, as well as the line that you know we're walking because we have just enough information to speculate and guess and hang ourselves with it, to be honest. Ugh! It drove me mad, but I never wanted it to end!

Shel: This is one of those novels that you find yourself inhaling within hours (while also trying to slow down your reading pace so that you can draw it out as long as you can); it's one of those novels that you wish had many more books in the series because there just seems like there could be so many plotlines and characters' stories that would be fun to read (we're greedy bitches when it comes to wanting more, more, MORE) but we're just excited to know that Double Down is out soon and will undoubtedly have us entertained, book drunk, and hungover by the end of the day. Court: SO MUCH MORE! And at the same time, I'm so glad that AT (our favorite) is releasing the duet this way because we get the next installment SOOOOOON!! Really soon. So get this one as soon as freaking possible, and get up to speed because you will not regret it! ACK!!!

Synopsis

Sometimes it only takes a minute. A connection of eyes across a room, and everything changes. I was a cocktail waitress with a fondness for partying and meaningless sex. He owned half of Vegas, with the reputation to match. I should have turned away. Instead, I stepped closer. Then, the liesstarted. Rumors spread. Stalking commenced. And someone died. None of it stopped me from falling in love.

Cry Baby by Ginger Scott
A Contemporary Young Adult Romance

Blurb:
Tristan Lopez is loyal to his brothers. He doesn’t really have a choice, born into a gang that has a chokehold on every kid that roams its streets. He gave his life to them willingly, knowing if he did then one day this kingdom, led by boys drunk with power and ruled by fear, would all be his.

He was loyal through it all. Loyal when prison took his dad away. Loyal when his face was touched by the cold metal of the rival gang’s gun. Loyal even though his mom begged him to run the moment she returned home from rehab.

He thought about becoming someone else. It was hard not to crave the life of a regular 17-year-old. It’s the only reason he stayed in school—to pretend. But he always fell back in line.

Loyal.

Riley Rojas didn’t belong in Tristan’s real world. She should have only been part of the fantasy, one of the many faces he got to pretend with amidst rows of metal chairs and desks and whiteboards with assignments. But there she was, moving boxes from the back of an old pick-up into a house Tristan had shot up on a dare with his friends only a few months before.

Tall enough to look him in the eyes and strong enough to fill his shadow, Riley took up space on his streets, her loud mouth fearless in the face of the gang leaders who terrified everyone else. She pushed Tristan around on the hard court, and she balled better than his friends—better than him
sometimes. She challenged him. She needed him. He liked it. And when her pale blue eyes stared into his, he quit wanting to pretend.

He couldn’t ask her to leave because she’d only dig her heels in deeper. He couldn’t ask because he didn’t want her to go. She was blurring his lines. She was testing his loyalty.

He was falling in love.

And it was going to tear him apart.

EXCERPT:
The room is so quiet that every small sound sends a jolt of urgency through my body. The refrigerator motor kicks on…then off. The heater rumbles and buzzes a loose vent cover in the hallway. A cricket hidden somewhere inside echoes.

“You get like that when you live here,” he says, bringing me back to the surface.

“Huh?” I shift my gaze to him and he steps close again, this time sitting on the couch, our knees nearly touching as he turns to face me.

“Paranoid, I guess.” His eyes move between mine as I nod, kind of understanding.

Tristan clears his throat then slides against the corner of the couch, gaining a few precious inches of distance. Probably for the best since we can’t be friends.

“You want to listen to some music?” I ask.

He chuckles lightly and cocks one brow, relaxing his expression when he sees that I’m serious.

“Oh…uhm,” he glances around the empty home. I get why—he wants to be able to hear what’s happening…out there.

“I’ll keep it low. I just thought maybe it would help…I don’t know…pass the time you have to sit here with me? You know, since it’s so awful and we aren’t friends.”

My expression grows hard. That was passive aggressive, but I’m still glad I said it. I see him wince, just barely, and I’m satisfied.

“Music’s good,” he finally says.

I pull my phone from my pocket and open my favorite playlist, starting it then setting my phone on the back of the couch. It’s a mix of everything, which is what I was raised on. My dad’s more of the country and oldies type of guy, and my mom like hard rock. I love pop and rap and pretty much anything, so it works. The first song that plays is from the eighties.

Tristan smirks, then turns my phone toward him so he can read, half laughing.

“Hey, I saw your lips moving with the words to that. You can’t make fun of me when you know the words,” I say, mouthing too-ra-loo-ra along with him.

His mouth curves slowly, and when it’s finally smiling for real, everything in the room shifts.

We begin to sing together, both messing up verses in our own ways, nowhere even close to being on key. When the next song starts and it’s country, Tristan groans, but I catch him mouthing the words to this one as well. I throw a nearby pillow at him and he catches it at his chest, holding it to his body and laughing until the sound fades out and we’re both just looking at each other.

Country turns into Elvis, and Tristan’s lip ticks up on one side as he blinks and looks down. His gaze doesn’t fall for long, though, and in a breath he’s studying me again.

“Careful, we might become friends,” I tease. He doesn’t laugh, and his grin falls a little, losing the dimples on his cheeks. I shouldn’t have said that. He took it seriously.

“Every single time I hear a car drive by, I assume it’s someone coming to kill me.”

My throat goes dry at his words, and my heartbeat pounds in my gut. His eyes flirt with me, moving to and away while he chews at the inside of his cheek. I’m frozen on his face, but in the periphery, I can see him wringing his hands.

He looks up and lets his breath slip away until his lip hangs open and his features droop, almost desperate. It’s a surrender.

REVIEW: The Chateau by Tiffany Riesz

OUR REVIEW:

I feel like I say this about every single Tiffany Reisz book I read but I can't help it. I'm powerless against her word sorcery and The Chateau once again shows that--I couldn't put it down, sleep be damned. Fans of her Original Sinners series are going to LOVE The Chateau and a chance to see two of their favorite characters again, and readers who are brand new to this particular book world will be equally enamored with it because the references to the series are woven so smoothly that you don't need to know anything about these characters to enjoy this novel as a stand alone novel.

It's completely absorbing, this novel, and I don't really know where to start. So I'll just say that I loved getting to see Kingsley in his more youthful days--to see him experience things that had a huge impact on his adult life and to see how he and Madame worked through some things that they both had in common (some of the discussions they had were so very insightful). I enjoyed trying to put all the puzzle pieces together before things were revealed and I especially enjoyed the very last section.

So, in summary, I love all things Tiffany Reisz and The Chateau is definitely a must read!

Summary:
As the Jack-of-All-Wicked-Trades for a secretive French military intelligence agency, Lieutenant Kingsley Boissonneault has done it all—spied, lied, and killed under orders. But his latest assignment is quite out of the ordinary. His commanding officer's nephew has disappeared inside a sex cult, and Kingsley has been tasked with bringing him home to safety.

The cult’s holy book is Story of O, the infamous French novel of extreme sado-masochism. Their château is a looking-glass world where women reign and men are their willing slaves. Or are they willing? It’s Kingsley’s mission to find out.

Once inside the château, however, Kingsley quickly falls under the erotic spell cast by the enigmatic Madame, a woman of wisdom, power, and beauty. She offers Kingsley the one thing he’s always wanted. But the price? Giving up forever the only person he’s ever loved.

REVIEW: Confessions: Julien by Ella Frank

SBPRBANNER-Julien-RB

Confessions JULIEN AMAZON copy

OUR REVIEW:
In Robbie's novel we got the basic lay of the land--what did Priest and Julien want, exactly, with Robbie and how would he respond? How would it work? In Julien's novel we get to see their relationship in action and we get to know more about what's haunting these Julien and Priest and how a relationship of three can actually work. I have to say that normally I'm guilty of thinking of 3 as someone always being left out -- in friendships and otherwise--but Ella Frank shows how it can work. How when adults communicate, ask questions, allow themselves to be vulnerable and to trust, 3 can be a very magic number.

As with most? all? Ella Frank novels, the steam factor is high but it's not salacious and sordid, it's loving and playful and passionate. As a matter of fact, because the steaminess was a foregone conclusion, it seemed like the story of these men and their backgrounds were allowed to unfurl and develop in a pace that didn't have to be a way to set up a sexy encounter.

Looking ahead to the final novel, there are still many questions to be answered before we get to a HEA. It'll be fun to see who pops up in Priest's novel --the cameos in these last two have loyal readers smiling and anticipating who will be next to get the Ella Frank treatment.

People are complex.

Love a double-edged sword.

And when it comes to a broken heart, there are no rules, only time…

For the past eight years, Julien Thornton has been living with a secret. One that only a handful of people know about.

To the outside world, he has it all.

A thriving career. A loving husband. And a face that the American public fell for by the millions, on a reality show that inadvertently saved his life.

But behind the shine of celebrity, behind the easygoing nature, a crippling truth fills Julien with pain and self-loathing. It’s a truth that he fights to overcome daily with the help of his husband, Joel Priestley, and now their boyfriend, Robbie Bianchi.

But unlike Priest, Robbie doesn’t know what he’s helping Julien to fight. He doesn’t know what Julien did all those years ago. And with the anniversary of his sister’s death fast approaching, the time for explanations is running out.

And thus the question: will the princess be able to forgive the prick as the priest once did?

Only time will tell.
