REVIEW + GIVEAWAY: Split by J.B. Salsbury

OUR REVIEW:

Shel: We've been huge fans of J.B. Salsbury since her very first fighter book and were super excited to see what Split was about when she announced it. One quick scan of the synopsis will show you, quickly, how different Shyann and Lucas are from her MMA fighters and their women. Shyann is closed off, quite a bit prickly, and sometimes so hard to like...at first. She's so intent on her vision of what she wants and how she wants to achieve it that she sometimes just needs to get her head out of her ass so that she can see things for what they are. I guess you can say that I was equal parts frustrated with her and proud of her. I liked how independent she was and how she didn't take shit from anyone; I didn't like how she could come off as selfish with her dad. Shyann was quite a strong character--one I liked because she provoked me. Lucas was also interesting. He was unfailingly polite and vulnerable and I felt simultaneously protective of him and nervous for him, constantly. Every time he felt the darkness circle, I tensed up waiting to see how he'd be impacted and if he'd be able to recover from it. I was rooting for him to get better..hoping against hope he'd finally find some peace and contentment after living through the horrors that had been forced upon him. Court: Just wow, guys. This book was intense from the prologue on. I could tell something was up, and I'm really glad that we really don't have too long to wait for it to come to the forefront. I liked Shyann too, and thought she was feisty. I relate to her, in how trying to do what you want is sometimes unpopular with how others want you to be...so I was like hoorah! lol. Lucas is so complicated, and as we delve more and more into his life and find out more about him...and how he just can't resist Shaynn's ability to break through the walls he has built up...and the writing. I thought it was brilliant, and I really liked Nash and Cody as background characters. They worked hard, and they loved their girl, and the memory of her mother. There is so much to love about this book.

Shel: As I think about all of the things that are happening within this novel--things that are way outside of my area of expertise, I find myself wondering how some readers will take this story. Could these things happen this way? How do you treat this in the real world? How realistic is all of this? I'm very curious. Coming from a standpoint of someone who doesn't know any of the answers to these questions, I would love to know from someone who does know the answers what they'd think of Split. In the meantime I'll say that I find this novel and the concept to be really interesting and gave me lots to think about. I like that Salsbury did something completely different and am looking forward to what she does next. Court: I couldn't have said that better, myself. I wonder that too. We've read a couple of books with this theme now, and I think it is so interesting how each person handles it. I know the human mind is so complex, and I just am fascinated by all of the things that manifest from it. I really enjoyed JB's version, and I wouldn't be disappointed by more from these people.
