Shel: Why read The Debt, you ask? The simple answer is Karina Halle wrote it and for many readers that will be enough. Others might need a little something more to go on, so here are a few other reasons to pick it up:
Shel: #1: I very quickly remembered how hot Gerard Butler was... Court: Uh, yeah. Definitely a great reason to read this, and quickly picture Keir looking and sounding like him!
Shel: #2: The beginning is hard to look away from and then as you get to know the two characters, Jessica and Keir, you can't help but root for them, hurt for them, and hope that the inevitable fuck up that's going to happen isn't too painful for them (or, frankly, yourself). As a couple they work well together as they figure out how to cope with their guilt and grief --in each other they manage to find comfort and relief from the things that torment them. Court: The beginning is brutal, and you just know there are going to be some more parts that just slay you out of this world! I am happy to report that my inner orthopedic nurse snob sat down and was pleasantly surprised with that aspect of this story, and all of the other psychological parts, the setting parts, and just everything - you can tell as always that Karina takes her stories so seriously and researches everything the best possible way she can and as a reader and in the medical field I appreciate it tremendously.
Shel: #3: Scotland. Karina Halle's travel writing is so lush; I can't help but want to go to every place she writes about (and snag her as my tour guide). Every book she publishes that has a road trip involved always has me falling in love with the places she writes about. And if I'm going to be honest, as I was reading I imagined Keir's accent and it was always so hot in my mind. Court: YES! I've been waiting for this book ever since we watched her explore the Scottish Highlands on her instagram feed, and it did not disappoint! The hows and whys that everything just blows up in the OH NO part of the book were unexpected and took me by surprise, and that is a good thing. Nothing about these two is predictable, and I love this series even though I have a couple to get caught up on!
Shel: #4: The steam factor is high. So high.Court: Yeah, not too much more I can on that but oh wow!
Shel: #5: Did I mention ...
Shel: So to sum up, it's emotional and lush and steamy and sweet and I think readers who are old fans of Karina Halle, or new ones, will enjoy The Debt. Court: Absolutely! We definitely enjoy her every time, and we want you to read this one too!
Her life changed in an instant. And he's the only one who could have prevented it. From the New York Times bestselling author of The Pact and The Lie comes a new standalone contemporary romance about those McGregor men. Jessica Charles shouldn't have even been in London when the unthinkable happened. She should have been back at home in Edinburgh, perhaps hanging with her boyfriend, having drinks with her sister or doing yoga with her group of friends. She should have been going on in her normal, dependable life as always. But on that fateful day in August, when a mentally-ill ex-soldier opened fire in public, Jessica's world changed forever. Now single and crippled from the gunshot wounds, Jessica finds herself scared and alone, losing faith in herself and humanity with each agonizing moment that passes. That is until a stranger enters her life. A stranger who makes her live again. Keir McGregor has always been the strong, silent type. Throw in tall, dark, and handsome and you've got pretty much the perfect Scotsman. Except Keir is anything but perfect. He's got a past he's running away from and a guilty conscience he can't seem to shed. But the more time he spends with Jessica, the more he falls in love with her. And the more his secret threatens to tear them apart. He may have been a stranger to her. But she’s never been a stranger to him.
