About BETTER WHEN HE’S BRAVE: In New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jay Crownover’s third novel in her sexy, thrilling Welcome to the Point series, a woman’s search for repentance leads her to the one man from her past she can’t forget as they join forces to save their city—and the explosive love neither can live without. Titus King sees the world in black and white. Right and wrong. Which is why as a teenager he left behind the only family he’d ever known to make a better life for himself. Now a police detective in one of the worst cities in the country, he can’t deny his life has turned into a million different shades of gray. The new criminal element in The Point has brought vengeance and destruction right to Titus’s front door, and the difference between right and wrong is nothing compared to keeping those he loves alive. To add to his already strained moral compass, the beautiful and mysterious Reeve Black has made her way back to town, and she might be as dangerous to Titus as the guy trying to destroy the Point because he needs her—in more ways than one. Reeve knows all about how ruthless this new threat to destroy The Point can be… and instead of running away, she wants to help. She has a lot to repent for and saving the city, plus the hot cop that she hasn’t been able to forget might just be the only way she can finally find some inner peace. With an entire city poised on the brink of war, Titus and Reeve stand in the crossfire—and it will take two brave souls to fight for the ultimate love.

REVIEW:

Shel: Something about this series compels me to sit down and not move until either my body gives out or I finish it. I'm not sure if it's the gritty texture of the world the characters inhabit or the questionable scenarios they're going to be involved in or what. All I know is that since the start of this series I've been more than willing to sit down and submerge myself into all the things. Shane (Bax) and Race's books hooked me and I was very curious to see what Titus' book would be about, especially knowing it would involve Reeve (the woman we all wanted to hate because of her involvement with Dovie being taken). Court: Titus King has been an enigma from the get go. He's definitely a man of substance, which in this series, is hard to come by...because the world Bax and Race live in is a hard one to be a good man. Which, they've proven you can be bad...and a good man...but, it is nice to find me a new man in uniform to love all the same. And I am always amazed by how bad these boys are, but the writing is so, so, so good! (Which is a part that doesn't surprise me, because Jay is amazing!)

Shel: Reading the synopsis will cover a lot of territory you probably don't want me to rehash; here are some things that stood out about this third book in the series:

  • Shel: I enjoyed getting to know what made Titus 'tick'. He seemed so unrelenting in the way he saw the law and right and wrong in the previous books so to get into his head and understand where and why he was the way he was was enlightening. He was actually not a pious dickhole at all and his desire to do the best he could even when he knew it might never been enough was admirable and inspiring. Court: Yes, he always seems so much better than the other boys...because it is nice to recognize his flaws, even if he tries so hard to keep them to himself...He was much more than I expected him to be, and I was in awe that our heroine is our anti-character this time around.
  • Shel: I liked that Crownover made Reeve a badass and kinda flipped the narrative on who was living in that gray area of right and wrong. I like a good antiheroine and while I wouldn't say that Reeve is an antiheroine, she isn't this innocent, naive, self-righteous character either. She has these very human flaws and acts on them first, thinks later (as many of us do). She's trying to make better choices and do the right thing but she's adamant about protecting and caring for those she loves and if that means she does some questionable things, so be it. I dig her! Court: I dig her too...and questionable things are probably being a little bit too...nice...for Reeve, but she was a character I couldn't help but root for all the same. I agree that she wasn't as all around bad as some of our favorite anti-heroines, but she definitely toes the line and I LOVED it. I like bad girls, and bad girls are a plenty in this one. (Yay for us...can't wait to see what happens with Keelyn)
  • Shel: The prologue was hard to read and I felt like I was reading the entire novel trying to get to that point; this isn't a bad thing-I had to see how she was going to end this. Court: GAh, what a hook right?
  • Shel: This is going to be weird and kinda spoilery-ish so if that makes you mad, scroll down. So I know I shouldn't like that Reeve and Titus have unprotected sex and are completely accepting of what could come of it but I did. I guess it felt right for these two and I wanted that for them. I liked that they recognized something in themselves and each other and knew that if 1+ 1 =3, they'd be more than okay with it. I KNOW THIS IS CRAZY but it totally worked for me. It made it feel more real for me. Court: I can't deny that I didn't totally swoon for Titus for that, too.
  • Shel: I also liked that it took me (and Titus) a while to figure out what Roark's deal was; why was he so intent on complete destruction? I liked that I had to work for that information. I also liked that his actions seemed to draw the people on both sides of the law together; love or hate The Point, they were going to protect their space. Court: The people of The Point are seriously hard core about their home...which I agree is admirable, because aren't we all attached to the place that helped shape us and grow us? I totally am, so I love that the setting becomes this huge character thanks to Jay's epic storytelling.
Shel: As I'm sitting here thinking about why I like this series so much, I think it's more than I can put my finger on, but here are a few thoughts: I like that it's grittiness, while fictional, doesn't seem that far off-base than many aspects of most urban life. I like that there really isn't black and white but swirls of gray and that the good and bad characters are constantly moving or hopping over their demarcated lines. I like that the darker aspects of this series aren't so dark that I feel like I'm soulless by the end and that there's always hope and love and friendship that manage to help us through the harder parts. I like that redemption is possible and compromise isn't a bad word. ..and I could go on and one but I suppose at the end of this all, the point is that I'm enjoying this series and am looking forward to the next book (though I'm sad to see this series so far only has 4 books in it...I can see room for a 5th, just sayin'). Court: I can see the room too. And I love what you say! I don't want to just duplicate it, but I have to say that in all of Jay's books this series is seriously a contender for my favorite of all...because it is so complete. Her alpha boys are still as alpha as ever, and she writes some badass heroines that we can't deny...but having a setting that breathes a huge life into the books as well is huge for me, and really makes this series immensely well rounded, and I think anyone looking for something a little bit gritty, and a lot of heart....you'll love this one.

And don’t miss the previous books in The Point Series!

  2. I haven't read this series yet, so I don't have a favorite. BUT I have read Jay's whole Marked Men series, and my favorite Marked man is probably Rowdy. Thanks!
