Our Review---

Wow. We recently read Tears of Tess and there was absolutely no way we could wait even a week before we started Quintessentially Q. We asked out twitter friends if they wanted to buddy read with us, set a date, downloaded the book and waited for Monday to get here. Then, I discovered that I am the ABSOLUTE WORST buddy reader ever. Once I got to chapter 6 (we were only supposed to go to chapter 5) I could NOT stop...until about the 65% range and then I had to stop because I thought I might die. Suddenly in that 65% range I decided that I could stop and let my buddies catch up..maybe grade a few research papers..read another novel. I was SO ANXIOUS. So I waited. One day. Maybe two days. Then I said SCREW IT and I threw in the towel and finished the book. I just couldn't put it off anymore. It was killing me slowly. I HAD to know how it was going to turn out. The 70-80-ish %'s were torture for me. Lots of deep sighs. Then I sped through to the end and now I feel I MUST HAVE book 3. NOW.

There are waaaaaay too many ways to spoil this novel and I have zero desire to spoil it so I'll just say a few things and let you decide if it's for you.

1. There are parts that are agonizing. Sometimes it's the emotion, sometimes it's the graphic nature of scenes, sometimes it's the imagining of it all.

2. There are parts that are heartbreaking: heartbreakingly sad and heartbreakingly tender

3. There are sighs: of relief, of frustration, of anger, of sadness, of contentment.

4. It might make you uncomfortable. I once again question myself. Why am I reading this? Why do I like this? DO I LIKE THIS? Turns out I do. I don't know why. Or maybe I do. I like the duality of the characters. I like their struggles. I like that they are like and unlike me. I like to think when I read. I like my buttons to be pushed. I thought. I was pushed. Good stuff.

As I was telling Courtney, this is novel is very much a "Pepper Winters" novel: sex, violence, feels, and good overtaking evil. As I'm thinking about what stands out for me, it's how unexpectedly good Kill was --it even took Cleo by surprise! Even when he was seeking retribution, it was 'good' (mostly)--I wasn't quite expecting Kill to seek his vengeance in all the ways that he did. I also didn't expect Cleo to be so gung ho into the club lifestyle--she had some thoughts about how things should be and it was interesting to see her observe and work through some of the new things Pure Corruption put in place. 

Reading about the history of Cleo and Kill, the history of Pure Corruption and Wallstreet, and seeing how it all worked together made for an interesting, emotional, and action packed (and sexy) novel. If you're looking for a MC club novel that challenges what the typical person thinks about bikers + a love story that spans the lives of the two main characters, this is definitely the 2 book series for you!

OUR REVIEW

Honestly my first thought when I started Unseen Messages was can I read 587 pages about people stranded on an island? YOU KNOW YOU'RE THINKING IT TOO, don't look at me with those judgmental eyes. I mean, seriously, they're on an island ...a deserted island and what could happen in those 587 pages that would keep me reading? 

Pepper Winters is notorious (in my mind only, I'm sure) for teasing out the backstory, the reveal, the conflict so that you feel like you have no choice but to read every gd page so that you can find out wtf is happening with her characters. I know it sounds like I'm hate reading this novel (that's a thing, at least for me) but I wasn't...I'm just being honest at what I've experienced. The thing is I can't stop. On the one hand I want to yell at these characters to get their crap together and work some things out, on the other I know that once all the secrets and past comes out the rate at which the ending is coming will go into hyperspeed and I'm not usually ready for that either. THE STRUGGLE IS REAL.

If you've paid attention at all the hype of this story, you'll know that Pepper Winters has a unique connection to this novel and it was with this connection in mind that I plunged into this "survival" novel with two feet. I found what was happening with the characters fascinating and I couldn't help but put the novel down frequently and wonder what or how I'd react in a similar situation. I marveled at how our two main characters, Estelle and Galloway, managed to survive and also realized how very little knowledge I'd carry into a similar situation--I'd be wholly unprepared for what was happening had I crashed there with them. 

Still going with being honest here and I'll say that at the beginning of this novel I was a little skeptical about the romance part of this. I thought to myself--would I really be concerned with lust/love/sex/romance while trying to figure out how to live/escape this crash site? Would I be thinking about how attractive the other person was? I don't know but Pepper Winters made it work; she made me willing to suspend reality and go with it. I found myself not only reading to see how they'd find solutions to their survival/escape but also how/if Estelle and Galloway would survive each other. It helped that both characters had similar moments of doubt about what was happening and that each of them speculated on things I'd question too. 

In conclusion, if you are looking for something completely different from Pepper Winters and you like lengthy reads, I'd definitely say this 'survival/romance/what if' novel is worth your time and attention.
