Honestly my first thought when I started Unseen Messages was can I read 587 pages about people stranded on an island? YOU KNOW YOU'RE THINKING IT TOO, don't look at me with those judgmental eyes. I mean, seriously, they're on an island ...a deserted island and what could happen in those 587 pages that would keep me reading?
Pepper Winters is notorious (in my mind only, I'm sure) for teasing out the backstory, the reveal, the conflict so that you feel like you have no choice but to read every gd page so that you can find out wtf is happening with her characters. I know it sounds like I'm hate reading this novel (that's a thing, at least for me) but I wasn't...I'm just being honest at what I've experienced. The thing is I can't stop. On the one hand I want to yell at these characters to get their crap together and work some things out, on the other I know that once all the secrets and past comes out the rate at which the ending is coming will go into hyperspeed and I'm not usually ready for that either. THE STRUGGLE IS REAL.
If you've paid attention at all the hype of this story, you'll know that Pepper Winters has a unique connection to this novel and it was with this connection in mind that I plunged into this "survival" novel with two feet. I found what was happening with the characters fascinating and I couldn't help but put the novel down frequently and wonder what or how I'd react in a similar situation. I marveled at how our two main characters, Estelle and Galloway, managed to survive and also realized how very little knowledge I'd carry into a similar situation--I'd be wholly unprepared for what was happening had I crashed there with them.
Still going with being honest here and I'll say that at the beginning of this novel I was a little skeptical about the romance part of this. I thought to myself--would I really be concerned with lust/love/sex/romance while trying to figure out how to live/escape this crash site? Would I be thinking about how attractive the other person was? I don't know but Pepper Winters made it work; she made me willing to suspend reality and go with it. I found myself not only reading to see how they'd find solutions to their survival/escape but also how/if Estelle and Galloway would survive each other. It helped that both characters had similar moments of doubt about what was happening and that each of them speculated on things I'd question too.
In conclusion, if you are looking for something completely different from Pepper Winters and you like lengthy reads, I'd definitely say this 'survival/romance/what if' novel is worth your time and attention.
