So I may or may not have stayed up until 4 am to finish Lick because I may or may not have been able to go to sleep until I knew what was going to happen with Ev and David. Really, y'all. 4 FREAKIN am. What is wrong with me?! I've been trying to put my finger on the reasons for this insanity and I've come up with a few theories...
Gah, it was so freaking good right? Not the most eloquent thing to say, but I definitely never claimed to be anything but spastic when I really love a book. And a rocker who gets married after a few hours in Vegas and a name like Lick totally got my attention!
Obviously the likelihood of an average girl like you or me getting hitched to a world famous guitarist during a night of drunken craziness is probably slim to none. I think the improbability of this scenario is exactly what drew me in. I didn't have to pretend it was real --and honestly after some of the super intense and depressing things we've read lately--it was a welcome journey into a fictional world where only a alcohol induced marriage would have a snowball's chance in hell to survive. I loved being absorbed in a world where people are rich and funny and just as messed up, if not more, as the rest of us.
Yep...which is exactly why I have read every book like it I have came across. And for it to be the girl who is the one who doesn't remember jack in the morning, was highly entertaining!
Another reason I enjoyed this read so much was that Ev seemed to be the one running scared whereas David seemed genuinely interested in wanting to stay married. While they both had their moments of weakness and angst, David was more open and vulnerable and Ev was more perplexed (initially) and eager to dismiss it all as a mistake. Of course, if that was the entire story it would be short...Kylie Scott decides to throw her characters some curve balls and there are interesting conversations, 'rules', annoying (and funny! and mean!) band mates and groupies, and those pesky exes as David and Ev try and decide what to do next.
I loved that I really didn't know what to expect from this. The title caught my attention, and I was sold on the blurb...but it could've gone a bajillion different directions. David doesn't talk a lot at first, but when he does finally I was in love. He is an emotional man with layers and is so tired of everyone pulling him in 100 different directions, so it isn't surprising that he keeps most of his thoughts to himself. Poor Ev was left in the dark for a while, and not given a lot of reason to trust him...but when they get on common ground things go from hot to scorching....wowza.
In addition to everything else mentioned, I also enjoyed the unconditional support David and Ev gave to each other. It was nice to see fictional characters share their thoughts and feelings (for the most part--there is one HUGE exception) and to feel safe enough to be open with each other. Even after things go terribly wrong both characters respect their friendship enough to care, encourage, and support the other one; I liked that.
Yes, did I mention that I loved David? No..I mean Yes..okay I will again. I LOVED his character, and that he is all broody and emotional and musical, but also when he feels something he feels it with abandon. And the fact that they go through a lot of stuff, and then he fights for her....I was a puddle of goo on the floor. I loved his love for his band and his brother, and that he doesn't give up, even when things get angsty and made my heart hurt.
Kylie Scott has another book coming out in this series and it's going to be about Mal--one of my favorite scene stealers in this book! This was a fun read and I am eager to see what happens next in the lives of these characters.
Mal was a breath of fresh air after the douchebaggery that was David's brother...so I am sooooooo excited that we get to find out more about him! Can't wait! OH yeah....go get this one! Like now. Not kidding!
