REVIEW: The Darkest Sunrise by Aly Martinez

Welcome to our blog tour stop for The Darkest Sunrise by Aly Martinez. It is the first book in a contemporary romance duet, and is it available to read for FREE on KindleUnlimited.

OUR REVIEW:

I really, really, really should know better than to choose a week day evening to start any duet that Aly Martinez writes. SERIOUSLY. I mean, hellooo, it's not my first time in Aly Martinez world and I know that I'm going to have to read until my eyes won't stay open or I finish it, whichever comes first. Of course I have absolutely no impulse control when it comes to her novels and jumped right into The Darkest Sunrise early last night. By the end of the prologue I knew two things:

1) Aly Martinez was not going to take it easy on us when it came to the hearts of Charlotte and Porter.

2) I would be reading until my eyes shut or I finished the novel.

Why? Well, the emotional distress of both Charlotte and Porter was compelling; they both were living lives that should've felt full and vibrant and yet they both were these shells--seemingly empty behind the eyes, if you were really looking. The thing is, until they 'found' each other, people had quit looking or were willing to give up the fight of trying to bring them back to life; but once they recognized their own pain reflected in the eyes of the other, somehow, someway their empty spaces started to fill up. What they were starting...this very delicate balancing act of a relationship, was complicated and not easy and yet you couldn't help but want it so badly for them.

As compelling as the emotional part of this novel was, the 'mystery' behind each of their stories is as compelling, if not more so. I have SO MANY QUESTIONS, most of which have yet to be answered which is why I am currently whining on all of our social media accounts about how badly I need book 2!! Luckily it's out in just a few weeks so I won't have to wait long.

Grab this novel--it's a great summer read: it'll have you feeling heavy and angsty and light and laughing and then you'll suck in your breath on the last page..and then you'll be reaching for book 2, just like we are.

You can follow Aly's newsletter for exclusive news about the duet.

Synopsis:

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me. Whoever coined that phrase is a bald-faced liar. Words are often the sharpest weapon of all, triggering some of the most powerful emotions a human can experience. “You’re pregnant.” “It’s a boy.” “Your son needs a heart transplant.” Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me. Lies. Syllables and letters may not be tangible, but they can still destroy your entire life faster than a bullet from a gun. Two words—that was all it took to extinguish the sun from my sky. “He’s gone.” For ten years, the darkness consumed me. In the end, it was four deep, gravelly words that gave me hope of another sunrise. “Hi. I’m Porter Reese.”

AUTHOR INFORMATION:

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children. Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person. She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
