REVIEW: Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

OUR REVIEW:

It may be a surprise to some of you? Or maybe to none of you? But, we actually like all types of books. We bonded over our love of contemporary romance but Court and I are both huge readers of all genres and really our main requirement for reading anything is that it can grab and keep our attention. Dark Matter definitely did both.
This novel was refreshingly melancholy, smart, heartbreaking, thriller-esque, and reflective. I know, I know--what an odd assortment of descriptors but I've been thinking about it for the last 24 hours and I don't know how else to explain it.
What I know is that I kept saying to myself over and over again: "MIND.BLOWN". The concepts that Blake Crouch put in this novel had me running to my favorite physics' teacher down the hall so that I could make sure I was understanding things correctly--and again, my mind was BLOWN. The idea of a multiverse, superposition, facets of us living simultaneously, decisions being made and changing the course of lives...I just..I just felt overwhelmed, curious, weirded out, and fascinated.
In other words, this novel made me think and I loved every second of it.
If you're looking for a smart thriller-ish novel about a man who loves his life, wife, and son and who does everything in his power to get back to it/them once he's become physically separated from it/them, then you should definitely check this out.
And, since this was the vaguest review ever, check out the synopsis below for more information.

A mindbending, relentlessly surprising thriller from the author of the bestselling Wayward Pines trilogy

-
“Are you happy with your life?”

Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious.

Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.

Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”

In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.

Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined—one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.

Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly human—a relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we’ll go to claim the lives we dream of.
