August 2016 Top Reads

Take a look at our top picks for August. If any of them look good, click on the book cover and it'll take you to Amazon for more information.

This Love and Not About Love by Hilaria Alexander are both so satisfying. Each book tackles a couple who are trying to figure some things out and we get to follow along in their journey to figure out who they are and who they are to each other. Emotional, funny, and really good reads.

The First Taste  is our second novel by Jessica Hawkins and it was not what I expected at all. A single father falling for a woman who seems like she's a badass bitch?! It totally works and has me looking for what Hawkins is putting out next.

Professed is absolutely amazing. Nicola Rendell gave us smart, sexy characters. The pages in this book smoldered and when I finished it I felt like I was smarter for having read it. What more can a reader ask for? Nothing....except for the next book Confessed, which is out soon and also fantastic.

Bad Judgment by Meghan March is exactly what New Adult Romance is all about. Young, up and coming law students who have a love-hate-lusty relationship, building sexual tension, amazing chemsitry, strong male and female characters and a solid HEA. We loved this stand alone.

Author Anonymous by E.K. Blair was fucking intense. I've never detested a person or her actions as much as I detested Tori. Mad props to E.K. Blair for writing this book in a way that had me all sorts of twisted up and pissed; it's a testament to her writing that I stuck with it to the end, despite my despising every action that was taking place. I finished the book hoping that Tori got her shit together and figured somethings out. I guess we'll never know if that happened but we can hope, right?

We had a wide variety of reads this month and if the beginning of September is any indication, we're going to have a tough time winnowing down our list of favorites when it's time to pick for our next monthly favorites. Until then, happy reading.

REVIEW: Sacred Serenity by Audrey Carlan

Sacred Serenity (A Lotus House Novel)
by Audrey Carlan, #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author
Genre: Erotic Romance
Release Date: 30th August 2016

OUR REVIEW:

I don't think I've met characters quite like these before and I don't exactly know what that says about me and my reading habits. In Sacred Serenity, this second installment of Lotus House Series, we have two characters who have very different views on religion and sex--two characters who are very far removed from my daily reality in many ways. I'm not used to having characters (or people in my life, for that matter), be so devout and committed to their stance on spirituality; it's more of a thing that people talk about in passing, so Amber's commitment to her faith and virginity and Dash's world view on spirituality was a smidge outside of my comfort zone. That being said, once I got used to what these two were all about, it was an easy book to enjoy.

Readers with an interest or curiosity in yoga, specifically the practice of Tantric yoga, will walk away feeling more educated on facets of what it's all about. It was interesting to see how Dash used his practice and knowledge as a guide in his relationship with Amber, both inside and outside of the bedroom and the yoga studio. (And for those who are wondering but don't want to ask, it's very sexual but not salacious, really--it made every sexual encounter more meaningful.)

Readers who like a more virtuous character will enjoy Amber. I found her a little sanctimonious and so I had a hard time relating to her, but I can see how many readers would find her vow to chastity an appealing trait.

In addition to the whole Tantric yoga experience, there's an entire subplot that involves Amber and her family that gives another element to the plot; it adds a little more tension and depth to a novel already brimming with potential conflict (when you consider their opposite religious ideas). Interestingly, with all the potential sources of conflict, this novel felt sweet and low angst--another pleasant aspect for those who are looking for a read that won't break them in two.

Synopsis:
Twenty-two-year old Amber St. James’s focus is on her education. Her plan is clear—finish the elite San Francisco/Berkeley Medical School program early and become a pediatrician. She hasn’t given much thought to dating or to men in general, until she enrolls in the required human sexuality course…a subject foreign to her for religious and personal reasons.

Tantric yoga practitioner Dash Alexander is Lotus House Yoga’s most sought after sensual teacher. Women flock to him for his unique teaching style, calm nature, and wicked hot body. When he hears of Amber’s plight, he offers to help. The condition? Amber must assist in his couples’ Tantra yoga class as his partner. The sizzling attraction between the two of them is beyond anything Dash has ever experienced…spiritually or otherwise.

Through his teachings, Dash makes love to Amber’s mind and merges with her soul. Physically there’s only one problem, a secret that’s sacred. Amber St. James is a virgin…by choice.

ABOUT BROOKE BLAINE

You could say Brooke Blaine was a book-a-holic from the time she knew how to read; she used to tell her mother that curling up with one at 4 a.m. before elementary school was her ‘quiet time.’ Not much has changed except for the espresso I.V. pump she now carries around and the size of her onesie pajamas.
Brooke is a USA Today Bestselling Author and enjoys writing sassy contemporary romance, whether in the form of comedy, suspense, or erotica. The latter has scarred her conservative Southern family for life, bless their hearts.
If you’d like to get in touch with her, she’s easy to find - just keep an ear out for the Rick Astley ringtone that’s dominated her cell phone for years.

Construction lights on the highway light her up from behind, like some rock star. The curve of her calves is perfect, pretty little ankles and strappy sandals. I’m such a goddamned sucker for sandals. Her dress is made of something thin. The wind kicks up, lifting her skirt and showing me her bare thighs. She tries to catch it with her hand, but she can’t stop the breeze, and she gives me the full Marilyn Monroe. This is not what I need right now. I force the door open with my shoulder and slide out. My neck hurts like a motherfucker, and the engine is pouring smoke. This was not the plan. I head up the dirt embankment. I can’t take my eyes off of her. The construction lights do me a favor and magnify the line of her breasts on the ground in shadow. I rub my stubble and then crack my neck. Marilyn. She had nothing on this one. Christ. The dress, it’s this peach color. Those shoulders are smooth and soft. That sexy blonde hair comes down in waves just past her nipples. She’s driving a white 2016 BMW X5. Top-of-the-line engine, pain-in-the-ass security system. You can’t steal that one unless you’ve got the key. Believe me. I know. I was driving a perfectly good Dodge 3500 Cummins turbo diesel Hemi V8. I hotwired it not an hour ago from the back lot of a Walmart fifty miles away, outside Knoxville. I was doing just fine until she came along. Not what I need. At fucking all. I walk up the embankment. The front end of the pickup is fucked, and the thing has started honking all by itself. The BMW, on the other hand, is just a little banged up on the bumper. Unbelievable. German engineering and further proof of the point that life’s a total bitch. That’s why you’ve got to steal what you want. Now I’m close to her. About ten feet away. A little bow accentuates her waist. One of her straps is a little bit twisted. Pouty lips. Are those freckles? Motherfuck it. “You stopped too fast!” she says, marching right up to me like I don’t outweigh her by a hundred and seventy pounds and I don’t tower over her by at least a foot. Totally fucking fearless. “Haven’t you ever heard of pulsing your brake lights?” She points at me. “Sir?” Sexy and angry? For. Fuck’s. Sake. Photo Aug 09, 1 20 31 PM About Nicola Rendell:

REVIEW + EXCERPT: The Debt by Karina Halle

the debt 0 days         The Debt AMAZON

OUR REVIEW:

Shel: Why read The Debt, you ask? The simple answer is Karina Halle wrote it and for many readers that will be enough. Others might need a little something more to go on, so here are a few other reasons to pick it up:

Shel: #1: I very quickly remembered how hot Gerard Butler was... Court: Uh, yeah. Definitely a great reason to read this, and quickly picture Keir looking and sounding like him!

Shel: #2: The beginning is hard to look away from and then as you get to know the two characters, Jessica and Keir, you can't help but root for them, hurt for them, and hope that the inevitable fuck up that's going to happen isn't too painful for them (or, frankly, yourself). As a couple they work well together as they figure out how to cope with their guilt and grief --in each other they manage to find comfort and relief from the things that torment them. Court: The beginning is brutal, and you just know there are going to be some more parts that just slay you out of this world! I am happy to report that my inner orthopedic nurse snob sat down and was pleasantly surprised with that aspect of this story, and all of the other psychological parts, the setting parts, and just everything - you can tell as always that Karina takes her stories so seriously and researches everything the best possible way she can and as a reader and in the medical field I appreciate it tremendously.

Shel: #3: Scotland. Karina Halle's travel writing is so lush; I can't help but want to go to every place she writes about (and snag her as my tour guide). Every book she publishes that has a road trip involved always has me falling in love with the places she writes about. And if I'm going to be honest, as I was reading I imagined Keir's accent and it was always so hot in my mind. Court: YES! I've been waiting for this book ever since we watched her explore the Scottish Highlands on her instagram feed, and it did not disappoint! The hows and whys that everything just blows up in the OH NO part of the book were unexpected and took me by surprise, and that is a good thing. Nothing about these two is predictable, and I love this series even though I have a couple to get caught up on!

Shel: #4: The steam factor is high. So high.Court: Yeah, not too much more I can on that but oh wow!

Shel: #5: Did I mention ...

Shel: So to sum up, it's emotional and lush and steamy and sweet and I think readers who are old fans of Karina Halle, or new ones, will enjoy The Debt. Court: Absolutely! We definitely enjoy her every time, and we want you to read this one too!

SYNOPSIS:

Her life changed in an instant. And he's the only one who could have prevented it. From the New York Times bestselling author of The Pact and The Lie comes a new standalone contemporary romance about those McGregor men. Jessica Charles shouldn't have even been in London when the unthinkable happened. She should have been back at home in Edinburgh, perhaps hanging with her boyfriend, having drinks with her sister or doing yoga with her group of friends. She should have been going on in her normal, dependable life as always. But on that fateful day in August, when a mentally-ill ex-soldier opened fire in public, Jessica's world changed forever. Now single and crippled from the gunshot wounds, Jessica finds herself scared and alone, losing faith in herself and humanity with each agonizing moment that passes. That is until a stranger enters her life. A stranger who makes her live again. Keir McGregor has always been the strong, silent type. Throw in tall, dark, and handsome and you've got pretty much the perfect Scotsman. Except Keir is anything but perfect. He's got a past he's running away from and a guilty conscience he can't seem to shed. But the more time he spends with Jessica, the more he falls in love with her. And the more his secret threatens to tear them apart. He may have been a stranger to her. But she’s never been a stranger to him.

“You’re not going anywhere,” he says. “Sit. I’ll get you another drink.”   “It’s getting late,” I say feebly but I sit down anyway, my leg giving a protest of pain.   “You need something for that?” he says, noticing my wince.   “The scotch will do fine,” I tell him quickly, not wanting him to make a fuss. “But really, I should go.”   “Why?” he asks from the kitchen. I hear the top pop off the bottle, the slosh of liquid in the glass. “Where do you have to be?”   I have to think about that for a moment. He comes over and holds out the glass. “I won’t keep you here if you don’t want to be here. But if you do want to be here, you don’t need to make any excuses.”   I take the glass from him, holding it delicately in my fingers. He stands over me, a massive wall, waiting for some kind of response.   “I just…” I begin. “I…” I take a sip for bravery. Swallow. “I’m not very good at this.”   “Good at what?”   “At…this. Being with a man.”   When he doesn’t say anything to that, I look up at him. He’s got a peculiar smile on his face, his brows raised. “You call this being with a man?”   I clear my throat, feeling my cheeks grow hot. “I mean. I’ve told you before –”   “Yes, how you don’t do relationships, how you don’t do sex.”   “I never said I don’t do sex,” I remind him quickly.   His eyes never stop searching my face. “Then what is it? What are you afraid to say?”   I have the sudden urge to flee and I know it must show because he suddenly points at me and says, “Don’t you dare say you have to go again. I want you to go back to what you said, that you’re not good at this. What is this? Us? You and me? There’s nothing mystifying about you and me, Jessica. You know quite well how I feel.”   I stare at him in shock. I do? “How?”   He looks off with an air of impatience. “I invited you to dinner, you turned me down.”   “But then you said just as friends.”   “And I meant it. But there are different types of friends. It’s up to you to decide what kind we are.”   I put my drink down with a clunk. “Holy pressure.” And now it’s not just my face going hot but my entire body, flushed from head to toe.   “You’re on fire, little red,” he says, his gaze skirting over my limbs in such a hungry way I can almost feel them on my skin. “I have to say, I like this look on you. Hot and bothered.”   “Back with the innuendos again,” I comment but my voice is weak.   “No, no innuendos this time. You came looking for me tonight not because you wanted to confess but because you want something from me. What is it? What do you want from me? What do you think I can give you?”   Jesus. This is so utterly unnerving. His words slice right through me, his eyes still peeling under the layers, trying to get at something I’m not even sure of myself.   If I lie, he’ll know. I can only be honest with him.   “I want…” I take in a deep breath, my eyes breaking away. “I want…company.”   “Company?” He sounds surprised.   I nod. “That’s the truth. I’m lonely. And I’m afraid. And I’m tired of being both those things. I want to be with someone who makes me forget who I am. You make me feel fearless in a way I didn’t think possible.”   There. That’s the truth. Most of it. It hangs in the air, thickening the tension like flour to stock.   He sits down next to me, has a mouthful of Scotch. “Wow,” he says, running his hand over the beard on his jaw. “And here I was thinking you wanted my cock.”   I burst out laughing. So does he, a big wonderful bellow. The tension in the room eases up a notch.   “Sorry,” I tell him when I catch my breath. “I guess they can both mean the same thing.”   He sucks in his lip briefly, his eyes taking a lustful turn. “If you want it to.” We stare at each other for a few heavy beats. Then his focus trails back to my gaze and he says, “Why don’t you stay over?”   And there I have it. The chance to know what those full lips would feel like on mine, what his skin would taste like. I swallow hard.
