REVIEW: Among the Heather by Samantha Young

OUR REVIEW:

I'm really enjoying this Adair Family spin off series; it has the same feel with new characters who are connected to the Ardnoch Estate and the Adairs. And like the previous series, there's always a threat or conflict or attack from an outsider that adds additional tension to the inevitable romantic conflict(s) the two main characters have.

In the case of Among the Heather, we are falling for Aria, the estate manager, and North, an actor in hiding, while they're falling for each other. Both Aria and North put up a good fight and try really hard to resist their chemistry and the innate draw they seem to have each other but despite the walls they throw up and the insults they exchange, they absolutely capitulate to all the things--the emotions, the chemistry, the everything. It doesn't mean that it was always easy--Aria has some serious trust issues--but they make it, thank goodness.

While the question of who is behind the threats or whether or not they'll love each other is not a puzzling mystery, I didn't need it to be. The characters and their backstories, the way they connect, and the evolution of their relationship kept me invested and just in it until the very end.

Looking forward to the next one, Through the Glen.

Among the Heather by Samantha Young is now live!

He’s a disgraced actor. She’s the daughter of Hollywood royalty. Both are hiding in the Scottish Highlands, but despite their antagonistic attraction, they can’t seem to hide from each other…

North Hunter has worked hard to step out of the shadows of his orphaned upbringing into the limelight of Hollywood. He never imagined a dark moment from his childhood returning to destroy everything he’d built. Devastated, he finds comfort in the isolation of an exclusive members-only club in the Scottish Highlands, even if the club comes with a prickly estate manager who sets his blood on fire.

As the eldest daughter of a Hollywood legend, Aria Howard has learned the hard way that people will use her to get to her father. When her last relationship ended badly, Aria fled to Scotland. Running Ardnoch Estate provides distance from a life that has never fit comfortably. But when defamed Scottish actor North Hunter disrupts her sanctuary, Aria is on the defense. The cocky actor is the last thing she needs, and despite their searing attraction, Aria is determined to dislike him.

But one night of drunken forced proximity with North leads Aria to share insecurities seeded by her horrible ex. When North offers to prove her ex wrong by taking Aria to his bed for a no-strings distraction, they begin an affair neither expected. However, their fiery liaison leads to a deep emotional connection that unsettles them both, and North will have to break down more than Aria’s trust issues if they’re ever to have a future together. He’ll need to protect her from a past that just doesn’t want to stay buried… or lose something far more essential to his existence than his career.

REVIEW: Beyond the Thistles by Samantha Young

OUR REVIEW:

Beyond the Thistles is the first book in a new series, The Highlands Series, that is a crossover from the Adair Family series. It features Sloane, an American transplant, and Walker a super badass commando, both of whom work on the Adair estate. He's working security and she's working as a housekeeper--hiding away from her dangerous ex-boyfriend (and father of her child).

This novel was immediately interesting -- it starts with the backstory of Sloane and her daughter and then jumps to the present day. We get to see how hard Sloane works to balance her work, her daughter's needs, and the side business she has a baker. Sloane's struggle as a struggling single mom isn't romanticized and feels so exhaustingly real. As we get to know her, we quickly learn that she has a huge crush on Walker and has signaled to him that she's interested in a few occasions, as they run in the same social circles.

Walker, mister quiet and grunty growly type, is also interested in Sloane but he's convinced himself that she's too young and that mixing friendship with pleasure isn't a good idea. But as awful things begin to happen that involve all of them, Walker finds that he can only resist his desire for so long, and eventually he capitulates to it. It's during this time that we slowly begin to learn why he's so relationship resistant and it has nothing to do with Sloane's age or that they share a friend group; it's easy to understand why he feels the way he does, and yet it's so frustrating to see him continually pull her in and then gently refuse to connect in the way really wants.

Thankfully this is a romance and while there are some tense times, Sloane and Walker get their HEA and I'm now hooked on this series. I have my guesses as about who will fall in love next but I'll patiently wait to see if I'm right.

Fast-paced, steamy, action-y read that is a fun weekend escape.

A grumpy vs sunshine, age-gap, romantic suspense set in the Scottish Highlands.

Beyond the Thistles by Samantha Young is now live!

It's been a long time since Walker Ironside left behind Scotland and the memories that haunt him. Yet after years of traveling the world as a bodyguard, Walker misses his homeland enough to return. To a village in the Scottish Highlands that plays host to an exclusive members-only club, Ardnoch Estate. If not happy, Walker is content working with the elite security at the club and maintaining his bachelor lifestyle. What he doesn't need is distraction in the form of the enticing but too-young newcomer, single mother Sloane Harrow.

Sloane never imagined she'd get pregnant at sixteen. Or that a decade later she'd escape from California with her daughter, Callie, to start over in the Scottish Highlands. Hidden and safe from Callie's dangerous father, Sloane is satisfied with their new lives. Her daughter is happy. Sloane has a stable job, a quaint cottage, a passion for baking that might just be turning into a business, and a huge crush on brooding security guard Walker Ironside. Unfortunately, the grumpy Scot seems immune to Sloane's charm, but she can't help but try to seduce him with cupcakes and baked treats whenever the opportunity arises.

However, when someone arrives in Ardnoch intent on destroying Sloane's life, Walker is the first to step forward to protect her and Callie. Even if it means giving into temptation and awakening his own demons. Because in doing so, Walker faces failing not only to shield Sloane from her past, but to safeguard her against his own.

REVIEW: A Cosmic Kind of Love by Samantha Young

OUR REVIEW:

If you read the acknowledgements of
A Cosmic Kind of Love, Samantha Young mentions that she doesn't think she's read a romance with an astronaut featured and it got me thinking, and I don't think I have either. It's something I didn't realize I was missing until I read this novel.

In this novel, Hallie is a smart, ambitious event planner for one of the hottest firms in NYC and Chris is a retired astronaut trying to figure out his next move. They end up together through an unusual meet cute--she accidentally opens up his video diary (sent to her client  (his ex-girlfriend) who accidentally sent it to Hallie) and becomes hooked on the smart, sexy, kind Chris. In an effort to even the score, once she's binged all of his videos and feels guilty about it, she sends him some video diaries, thinking he's never seeing them (even though he is) and all of that leads to them meeting at his ex-girlfriend's engagement party, planned by....you guessed it, Hallie. Upon their first meeting, Hallie admits to watching his videos, he doesn't admit to watching hers, but the attraction is immediate so he concocts a plan to have her plan an event for him as a way to get to know her better.

It's through their meetings that their romance begins and we get to know more about them--their messed up childhoods, their insecurities, and just how really awesome they both are. Of course, their path to an HEA isn't straight--there are several events and obstacles that throw them some curves--but ultimately, the things that they have to overcome aren't too terribly painful and we don't have to suffer too much to get to that happy ending.

A Cosmic Kind of Love is a quick read with pages packed with funny moments, as well as moments that are more emotional. The characters are easy to fall in love with and you can't help but want them to end up together, living their best lives.

BLURB:

Space is the last thing an event planner and an astronaut need in this charming new romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Samantha Young.

When event planner Hallie Goodman receives party-inspiration material from the bride of her latest wedding project, the last thing she expects to find is a collection of digital videos from Darcy’s ex-boyfriend. Hallie knows it’s wrong to keep watching these personal videos, but this guy is cute, funny, and an astronaut on the International Space Station to boot. She’s only human. And it’s not long until she starts sending e-mails and video diaries to his discontinued NASA address. Since they’re bouncing back, there’s no way anyone will ever be able to see them...right?

Christopher Ortiz is readjusting to life on earth and being constantly in the shadow of his deceased older brother. When a friend from NASA’s IT department forwards him the e-mails and video messages Hallie has sent, he can’t help but notice how much her sense of humor and pink hair make his heart race.

Separated by screens, Hallie and Chris are falling in love with each other, one transmission at a time. But can they make their star-crossed romance work when they each learn the other’s baggage?

REVIEW: Always You by Samantha Young

 OUR REVIEW:

The Adair Family Series has been quite the roller coaster ride, which  Always You continues. In this novel, we get the story that's been hinted at for quite a while--the story of Robyn's dad and Lachlan's sister, Mac and Arro. These two have a long and somewhat tortured past together and a large part of this novel is devoted to giving us that backstory and unpacking all of the emotions and feelings that are tangled in. There's quite a lot of angst and back and forth between these two and you just can't help but feel for both of them--they're both carrying around some hefty feelings. As with the other novels in this series, we're grappling with their complicated love story and a threat that hangs over their heads, to keep us all on our toes. This novel also gives us more of a look of the two brothers who've been only been mentioned in passing and a hint of the love and drama coming.

If you're looking for a series that showcases a strong family connection, complicated and enduring love stories, and the threat from a mysterious force or presence, you'll definitely want to look into all of these novels, starting with the first.

Always You by Samantha Young is now live!

Arrochar Adair has loved her brother's ex-bodyguard and best friend, Mac Galbraith, for years. Once upon a time, she was too young for him, but now that she's a mature woman in her thirties, Arro can see no issue with their difference in age. Yet something deeper, a problem much more difficult to surmount, is keeping them apart.

Mac Galbraith remembers clearly the night Arro became everything to him, no longer just his best friend and boss's younger sister. However, having made many mistakes over the years, there is one mistake Mac is determined not to make: to believe that he is worthy of Arrochar Adair. Allowing them to grow closer during his daughter, Robyn's, return has proven his undoing. And when Arro forces the subject of their relationship, his response pushes her away. He just never meant for it to destroy them completely.

Devastated by Mac's final rejection, Arro is determined to move on without him in her life, though he seems intent on staying put. And when the Adair family face a new threat, one that may have ties to Mac's past, Arro can't seem to be rid of the man. In fact, Mac will do anything to protect her.

But with so much hurt between them, will Arro let Mac close enough to guard her from their enemy... before it's too late?

REVIEW: There With You by Samantha Young

OUR REVIEW:

There With You is the second novel in a series of interconnected novels. In this particular book we are following the love story of Thane and Regan, siblings to Lachlan and Robyn. Y’all, I enjoyed this novel so much. I loved that Samantha Young got me to actually like someone I really didn’t like in book one. And not only did I like her, I loved her whole arc—from seemingly shallow, flighty girl to this really warm, smart, brave woman—all things that were always there, just hidden by years of feeling forced to be something she wasn’t.

I also really enjoyed Thane’s growth as well, even though he pissed me off time and time again.

Everything about this novel—the plot, the romance, the characters and secondary character were exactly what I wanted to read. It was at times funny, other times serious or just sad, sexy, and an HEA that felt right. I couldn’t put it down and am so eager for the next Adair to fall in love—can’t wait to see what Young does next!

There With You by Samantha Young is now live!

For Regan Penhaligon, there's no better place to run to than the exclusive Ardnoch Estate in the remote Scottish Highlands. Her impulsive behavior has finally caught up with her and Regan's visit with her sister, Robyn, is an opportunity to hide from someone who has grown dangerously obsessed with her.

Determined to make amends for her mistakes, Regan plans to repair her relationship with Robyn by staying close. And when an offer of help comes from Thane Adair, Regan gratefully accepts.

Widower, Thane, needs a new nanny housekeeper for his two young children and when they bond with Regan Penhaligon, he offers her the job. But as the weeks pass and the complex American reveals who she really is, Thane struggles with his growing attraction to her.

Regan never expected to feel so intensely for Thane, but she can't deny her passion for him or her love for his children. When someone from Thane's past threatens his family, Regan wants to be his pillar of support. However, his continued inability to trust her might just destroy their chance at future happiness... and the person who drove Regan to Ardnoch might snuff out her chance for any future at all.
