Review: Kiss the Sky by Krista and Becca Ritchie

OUR REVIEW:

Shel: The problem with reading any book in the Addicted series is that once you finish it, you immediately want to pick up the next one; I seriously need to remember this for next time so that I'll make more time to read more books.

In this installment, we get into the inner workings of Rose and Connor and these two are very interesting. I like that we get to know what's going on in Connor's head because he's been such a mystery up to this point---and he's seriously like this super great guy, albeit a bit arrogant, but still all in all a really good person. And, I like that we get to see that while Rose owns her bitchy behavior, what we really see is that she is loyal and loving underneath her hard exterior. 

We get to know all of this stuff while all of the six main characters in this series undergo an extremely stressful living situation-- being filmed for a reality tv show; I was stressed FOR them as I read the different awful things that kept happening(FUCKING DOUCHE, SCOTT!! and Rose and Connor's mothers, and JULIAN...gahhhhhh). To their credit, though, all six of these characters held strong and didn't let the bad things get them down. What's intriguing to me about this whole scenario is the reason behind it--to salvage the name and brand of Rose and Lo's families. I'll admit that I was a smidge not cool with this idea (like I have a choice, hahaha) because it felt a little self serving for Rose and super stressful for the two people who had already lost so much (Lily and Lo). But, Rose does discuss her reasons for it and I suppose the strength to endure it, showed them that they could.

Before I end this and tell you that you should definitely buy it, I will say that there a few times that the pieces and parts of the characters felt a little disjointed or maybe I wasn't always sure what the motivation for an action was and it threw me a little. BUT!, this was something that I'd ponder for a moment and then I'd plunge right back in because the story was interesting and I wanted to see what the hell Scott was up to. I think, so far, this is my favorite book in the series and I highly recommend it. I read it during a work week in less than 24 hours!


And I just had to come back and say...that Connor, he's super sneaky the way he wormed his way into my heart, same with Rose. Those two are people I'd want in my life. Thank you TwinPens for writing these two. Love them!

REVIEW: Addicted For Now by Krista and Becca Ritchie

REVIEW: 
If you have NOT read the other two books in this series STOP right now and do NOT read further. 

This series is addictive--as a matter of fact, I'm plotting ways to barricade myself in my room and hide from all responsibilities while I marathon read the other books in this series. (If only, right?!!--stupid real world puts a major halt to all of my fun.) So, what makes this so good? 

Well, Lily and Lo are now coping with his return from rehab and her coping with her addiction. It's painful and engrossing all at the same time. You feel so proud of Lo and how far he's come at the same time you feel anxious for Lily and her struggle to keep moving in a positive direction--it was definitely a read that I felt the ups and downs. The struggle for Lily was so real--so in the moment, and I suppose, if I think about it, this really felt like her book. We witness her successes and fumbles and worries...and her pride in her sisters and Lo. 

In the midst of both Lily and Lo struggling to cope with their new reality, a whole new MAJOR problem crops up and it adds additional strain on everyone and everything. It also sheds some light on secondary characters --some I loved more (Rose, Conner, Daisy, Ryke, Allison) and some I loved to hate (Lily's mom, Sebastion, and others who shall remain unnamed), and I am still struggling with how I feel about Jonathan Hale. <--- am I supposed to? Because I have some serious dislike for him and yet, I appreciate some of the things he does...so major conflicted feelings about him right now.

A few other things--if you're looking for a quick and twisty plot, I'd say this might not be for you--I loved it because it took me through their emotional states and took the time to explore how and what Lily and Lo felt and while it definitely does have plot twists, the novel feels more focused on the emotional impact of the post-rehab/ post-CF stuff that involves Lily and Lo.

I am eager to tackle the next books in this series and hope to do this soon. In the meantime...

REVIEW: RICOCHET by Krista and Becca Ritchie

SPOILERS to the first book...be warned...

The Ritchie sisters officially have a new stalker..ahem...fan in me. It started with Addicted to You and I'm actively trying to squeeze in every book in this series between the books we're obligated to read and review. I guess you could say this series is becoming my addiction...yeah I know..sooooo clever.

In Ricochet we live through the months of Lily and Lo's separation due to Lo's stay in rehab. It's the ultimate challenge: can he make it without alcohol and can she make it without sex? I'm not telling you. NOT TELLING..you must read it. I will tell you, though, that if the first one was hard to read because of how dysfunctional and co-dependent they were, this one is hard because of the struggle to deal with choices and decisions and to see Lily embark on her discovery of who they are and why they are. Her discomfort and day to day struggle was painful to witness and yet something that had to be done. I loved the way they handled her story and some more pieces of the Lo + Lily history came into the story. I loved that we learned even more about Rose and Connor and Ryke and Daisy..and even Lily and Lo's parents. 

I think of all of the things I'm loving about this series is that the subject matter of addiction is almost the main character in this book. It's taken seriously and it's hard to read and I loved that it's never, ever taken lightly. It's never belittled (by those who matter) and that Lily's struggle to deal with the truth, and her truth, was painful. I loved that the Ritchie sisters put her in real situations and made her live through them and deal with the hard stuff. I loved how honest Rose, Connor, and Ryke were. And I loved seeing Lo begin to take positive steps to recovery..and seemed determined that Lily do the same.

I also loved seeing the evolution of their love. Her fear, his strength...the anxiety and worry and need for the other one to be okay--I was rooting for them both the entire way.

It's really such a fantastic series. It's unlike anything else I've read and I'm eager to see what the other books have in store for us. Thanks so much Becca and Krista for writing these books; I love that you've given me (and your readers) something to think about.

KRISTA & BECCA’S BEST APRIL FOOL’S PRANK

There are plenty of classic April Fool’s pranks. The Saran wrap on the toilet seat, the toothpaste Oreos, or even something as simple as a “made you look” joke. As twins, there was really only one April Fool’s prank that seemed right for us and we continued to do it every year.

It first started in middle school in 6^th grade, we sat down together and made up a plan to switch classes. Yes. We were going to finally be able to answer the question we always get. The answer to “have you ever switched classes in school?” would now change from a lame “no” to a stellar “hell, yes.” But first, we had to plan.

Step One: We took notes from the movie Parent Trap (the Lindsay Lohan version) and sat down the night before, mapping out each classroom. We had to know exactly where we both sat in the class so that we didn’t look like fools.

Step Two: Tell a trusted friend in each class. This was our back-up plan, in case we still couldn’t find the seat or in case we needed to ward off students who got a suspicious eye. The friend would be there to corroborate that we were indeed the correct twin.

Step Three:  Dress alike. Contrary to popular belief, we didn’t ever dress alike in school. Those days were long gone, left in the past with elementary school when our mom dressed us. So yeah, it was going to be a little suspicious that we were showing up on April Fool’s Day dressed alike. But we hoped that the teachers wouldn’t notice since we didn’t have the same classes together.

And then came April Fool’s Day. We split up. Switched classes. It was terrifying. As a bona fide rule-follower, breaking this one rule (even of the Fool’s Day) was not liberating like I thought it would be. I was downright a nervous ball of sweat all day. Did it work? Some students definitely knew. Or at least maybe it was my subconscious playing tricks on me and thinking everyone was looking at me and pointing. Who knows. But not once all morning did a teacher pull me aside. Either they didn’t know or they didn’t care. Which was fine by me.

Becca had a different story. She immediately went into the classroom and “slouched” in her chair. Which prompted my friend from Step Two to scold her with “Krista doesn’t slouch. You’re not acting like her.” Yes. I was the Hermoine Granger of 6^th grade. And then the worst happened—Becca was caught last period by one of the science teachers that we shared.

I was unaware that she had been caught, but when I was pulled out of my last period class by the science teacher, I knew something was amiss. He told me with a straight face that I was about to be in serious trouble. Skipping was not allowed and what we did was going to send us to the Principal’s office. Cue the waterworks. I instantly started crying and blubbering like a fool. And then out pops Becca from around the corner with a sheepish “April Fool’s?”

I had been tricked. My sister and the science teacher schemed together to dupe me.

And that was how Becca (singularly) pulled off the best April Fool’s Prank, but not only switching classes but then pranking her own twin teammate. *bows down*
