OUR REVIEW:

Break Me almost did just that--it almost broke me. This final book of Dario and Sarah's was brutal and I say that having read almost all, if not all, of C.D. Reiss's books. The vast majority of this novel seemed like it was always a choice of lesser evils--see the end of the second book in this series for a taste of how harsh every decision Dario and Sarah had to make. If she does x, then will it hurt him? If he does y, will it hurt her? It seemed like they both were in a constant lose-lose situation. How could either of them escape the situations they found themselves in and remain intact? sane? able to face and live in the world again? I truly can't imagine how Reiss 'lived' in their world as she was creating it--was she in constant angst like her readers? Or was she gleeful at the impossible situation she put them in? Either way, mad respect for powering though and giving us an ending that almost seems miraculous, considering all the things that lead up to it.

As with all of her previous trilogies, Break Me starts where the previous novel left off --there's no guess work as to what's happened in intervening days, weeks, or months--you're right in the moment that she last left you. Reiss's prose is spare and packs a punch as she hits us with one conundrum after another until we can catch our breath and get that HEA that sometimes felt impossible to achieve. And since I'm a sucker for her particular brand of reader-torture, I'm ready for more.
