Excerpt
“Where have you been?” My sister rushed forward, catching me up in a tight hug. “I’ve been trying to call you all day. We checked everywhere and couldn’t find you.”
“Sorry. I just needed some alone time.” I squeezed her back, unable to stop from smiling. The thought of Anne turning her back on me had scared me more than I liked to admit.
“Well, I get you might want that.” She stepped back. “But you could have told someone.”
“You can’t just disappear like that.” And Ben kept right on frowning. “Shit, Liz, you’re pregnant.”
“Don’t upset her,” snapped Anne.
Ben ignored her. “I don’t know what the hell’s going on in your head. But you need to let me know where you are.”
My eyebrows went up and my mouth opened, ready to rip him a new one.
“She doesn’t answer to you. She’ll let you know if and when she decides to let you know,” said Mal, laying down the law to his bandmate before turning my way. “You will text your sister next time you decide to go wandering for a day, understood?”
My mouth, it still hung open.
“Christ, man.” Over and over, Ben’s hands rolled into tight fists before releasing again. “Can you cut the shit and get off my back for a fucking minute?”
“Don’t swear at him.” My usually sensible and staid sister poked a finger dead center in Ben’s broad chest. “You’re the one that caused this mess, thank you very much. She might still be a little young and naive, but you’re definitely old enough to know better.”
“That’s right.” Standing about as tall as a skyscraper, despite only coming up to Ben’s nose, Mal stared him down. Or up. Whatever. “This is a family matter. You can leave, thanks.”

Blurb
Positive. With two little lines on a pregnancy test, everything in Lizzy Rollins' ordinary life is about to change forever. And all because of one big mistake in Vegas with Ben Nicholson, the irresistibly sexy bass player for Stage Dive. So what if Ben's the only man she's ever met who can make her feel completely safe, cherished, and out of control with desire at the same time? Lizzy knows the gorgeous rock star isn't looking for anything more permanent than a good time, no matter how much she wishes differently.

Ben knows Lizzy is off limits. Completely and utterly. She's his best friend's little sister now, and no matter how hot the chemistry is between them, no matter how sweet and sexy she is, he's not going to go there. But when Ben is forced to keep the one girl he's always had a weakness for out of trouble in Sin City, he quickly learns that what happens in Vegas, doesn't always stay there. Now he and Lizzie are connected in the deepest way possible...but will it lead to a connection of the heart?

Synopsis
Reach for the scars...

Remember me? Aeron Lore: happy and humble. A people person. All around nice guy. Even I can't say that with a straight face. But seriously, things are going great. Leo's behaving herself; I'm enjoying making sure she behaves. We're a great team. SilentWitn3ss, our live-streaming news project, has launched to my favorite things ever: controversy and profit. So when the FBI comes to me and wants to use SilentWitn3ss footage to trace a serial killer named Blood Honey, I'm only too happy to be superior—I mean, to help. And if Leo thinks the brutal Blood Honey and I have a few things in common, I guess that's to be expected, given my rather unique preferences in the bedroom. My...condition. But I'm not like him. I can't stand that she would even think it. If his actions threaten my relationship with Leo, I'll hunt that fucker down myself. If he gets too close for comfort, I will make him bleed—and trust me, he's closer than I ever anticipated. There's a food chain, grasshoppers. The buck doesn't stop with him. It stops with me. Blood Honey is a nasty son of a bitch, but I can be a lot worse. Question is...do I want to be?

Author Bio
I like dysfunction. Broken people who can't fix each other, but fit together because they're missing the same pieces. One of my favourite songs declares, "take the sinner down to feed desire," and that's my MO. I write dirty psychological thrillers with strong elements of dark romance.
I love antiheroes. Female characters who don't just accept their faults, but downright exploit them. No nice boys. No shame. Mindfuckery for all.

Synopsis
The name's Aeron Lore. And you are...? Such a pleasure to meet you, sweetheart. Is that a southern accent? Gorgeous.
You fucking bitch.

Why so surprised? I control a billion dollar fortune. I control the news. Give me five minutes and I'll control you, too. If you could read my mind, you'd probably call me perverted. Unnatural. Manipulative. But I've learned to blend in, to be funny and charming. A predator in a designer suit.

I have no conscience. No shame in taking the things I want. And what I wanted was for Leontine Reeves to sell me her boutique tech firm so I could exploit the fuck out of it. Maybe exploit the fuck out of her, too, because desire haunts me in shades of scarlet, and I desire Leo most of all.

I never meant for this to be a love story. I fought it kicking and screaming, the same way Leo fought me. Now we're bleeding into each other, making a mess. A chaos. There's no control here. And what do monsters like me do when control leaves the building?

We attack.

Shel: This has been such a fun series and after the heavy nature of the last two in this series, it was fun to have a lighter read. And, honestly, I've been waiting to hear Casey's story for a while now; once I started it, I zoomed through it. Court: This is true. She is the backbone of the group, in that she gives good advice, and is always there for them. Then...she isn't, because she doesn't give the core of herself the same way they do. There was a lot to be done to get to the heart of that.

Shel: Why did I inhale it so quickly? Here are a few reasons:

  • Shel: Casey is so likeable. Is she flawed and stubborn? Absolutely. Is she honest and willing? Yes and those two qualities endeared her to me, almost immediately. She owned who she was; I loved this about her. Court: Yes. If she hadn't been so honest, her story might not have been so endearing. It isn't always fun to have a sassy heroine who isn't likable, and thank God Casey is likable. She knows what she wants, and goes after it...but guess what? She is human too, and has a unique vulnerability about her that we like.
  • Shel: Tenn. Well, his name is great. And he's an ex-military, ex-rancher, motorcycle dude and that's pretty great. And, he's a great dad... which is awesome. Has a filthy mouth? Yep. And his patience and adoration of Casey...is freaking amazing..makes me all melty for him. Court: He is SUCH AN AWESOME GUY! I think I like him almost more than every other SB hero, because he is such a great dad, a fun guy to be around, and holy honest batman...he calls Casey out on her shit, and right when she needs it...but not too OTT alpha that he doesn't melt her (and us) like butter.
  • Shel: Sawyer also included cameos of all of the other couples and that makes it so much fun--getting all of their stories, seeing where they are...ties up lots of loose ends. It does. And hello there, Nix Caldwell. That was a fun series crossover too!
  • Shel: The angst is reasonably low. Don't get me wrong. I definitely had to put my book down a few times and take some deep breaths, but overall, I was able to power through with few ragey moments. Court: Girrrl, I know. Casey makes us work for it. But...it wouldn't be a Saywer Bennett book if the outcome wasn't completely worthwhile, the plot swift and engaging, and the characters lovable at their core...even when they make us want to strangle them and Sawyer's writing as always is well, flawless.
Shel: I guess when I take a step back and think about it, this novel just gave me the warm fuzzies. It's nice to read about a fictional couple works. They don't make things more difficult than they really need to be and they're respectful and patient of the other person in the relationship. Having Casey end this series was the perfect choice....and I'm stoked to know that Woolf will have a book too! Yay!!! Court: I have to be honest that I am sad to leave the Last Call world behind, but biker's and rancher's in Wyoming...hello there. I can't wait. Sawyer...keep your words coming, we love you.

"Against Love" by Katherine Philips

Today my students and I had a great discussion on this poem. Many of them felt that it was very age appropriate for them, which is true, but I argued it's appropriate for anyone old enough to have been hurt by love.

The last 7 lines provide an interesting shift in the poem but it's the last two things that are the most telling for me. It feels like the subtext may be hinting that maybe we should be open to love, even though it hurts--or maybe that's my wishful thinking. At any rate, I like this poem's thoughts on love and I definitely think I've read some novels where this would be very apropos.

"Against Love"
by Katherine Philips

Hence Cupid! with your cheating toys,
Your real griefs, and painted joys,
Your pleasure which itself destroys.
Lovers like men in fevers burn and rave,
And only what will injure them do crave.
Men's weakness makes love so severe,
They give him power by their fear,
And make the shackles which they wear.
Who to another does his heart submit,
Makes his own idol, and then worships it.
Him whose heart is all his own,
Peace and liberty does crown,
He apprehends no killing frown.
He feels no raptures which are joys diseased,
And is not much transported, but still pleased.
