Our Review---Anytime I pick up a Jessica Sorensen novel I know that I need to have a few things handy: time (because I'm not going to want to stop reading), my phone (so I can text Courtney with my angsty angst fest), and alcohol (to help me cope with the emotions).  The Redemption of Callie and Kayden was no different. I had all three of my requirements at my disposal and I used them. Haha! This! Yes. That is the required arsenal, though no EtOH on my part...(Sorry. Just worked a detox unit this week...that's alcohol.)

It's true that the horror of their stories was revealed in the first book and that was painful. This book deals with the aftermath. It was hard to read sometimes, not because of the writing but because I wanted to get to the resolution, I wanted my happy and it took a while to get there. I kept a keen eye on the %...because I was so wary of what lay ahead. I was nervous as hell...and to be honest...that is why it has taken me ages to read this next installment.

Kayden and Callie both worry, a lot, about how their decisions have negatively impacted the other. They are very much in their heads..withholding their fears and worries to protect the other. While this sort of drives me apeshit crazy, and I'd love for them to spill their guts early and often, I also understand their reticence. They love each other enough to want the best. They know that not having the other one will be crushing, but they are willing to walk away if it means the other one will live a healthier, happier life. Problem with that, though, is that they want and need each other so badly that not being with each other..it won't do. This killlllled. Why do we do this to ourselves. Please, I would like to know. But then flip that over and put yourself in their shoes. Their lives have been in the darkest pits of hell horrible for them...and I just can't understand their motivations simply because I don't share those experiences. The writing made my stomach hurt, my heart speed up...made me kind of sweat a little bit...waiting. Waiting for that one thing to happen that we all were worrying about. My heart broke when it did...and it is nice to have somewhat of an anti-hero in this series to be the one that needs saving. And if I didn't use that particular word correctly, Shel, I apologize.

Thankfully, between Luke and Seth, Kallie gathers her strength and begins to take the hard steps of opening herself up to Kayden. She tries to break through his barriers and show him how much she cares. With her persistence, he finally starts coming around and that's when things begin to fall into place for them. Luke and Seth were the biggest surprises of all. Okay, Seth...I take that back. He's been awesome from the beginning and is so self-assured...but Luke really surprised me and I suddenly realized...Hey. Luke. Violet + Luke. The next book. *mind blown* I'm slow. I apologize. I can't wait for the next books!

This novel is not action packed with major revelations but it is emotional and engaging. I'm very interested in Luke's story which is coming up on our list very soon. We can't help but binge of Jessica Sorensen. When we read one, we have to read three or four. Luckily her list is growing at the speed of light (she is a rock star writer!) and we have plenty to choose from!

SYNOPSIS:

"The monsters you really should be afraid of, don't need to hide in plain sight. The truly dangerous ones…have no need to hide."

When physical pain allows you to escape your reality; what do you do when the pain is no longer strong enough to quiet the emotional ache?

Diouana “Nikki” returned to her hometown six months ago to tend to her sick mother. She thought she’d left her “baggage” behind her on the opposite coast, only to find that it never left her side. As her self-destructive thoughts begin to consume her, her mother -- realizing Nikki’s torment -- pushes Nikki to complete her last wishes.

Eric Brenton, Nikki’s new neighbor, lives in a dark, chaotic world that is easily hidden behind his model good looks and cocky demeanor. Unapologetic about his dirtier intentions, he sets his sights on Nikki with an offer to help her. But his help comes with very unorthodox conditions and a huge price.

And Eric...comes with an extensive black box warning label.

Warning: Contains graphic language, frequent graphic sex, and dark themes.

EXCERPT:

“You owe me ten thousand dollars.”
“Do you want that in cash...or check?” I asked.
“Youre not serious.”
“Im very serious about clearing my debts.”
He examined me for a few minutes of silence. “Im having a low-key housewarming party on Saturday.”
“Seems all you do is party.”
“There’s nothing wrong with wanting to celebrate on my downtime.”
“Only if its all the time.”
“Which its not. Stop making statements like we’re best buds who’ve known each other forever. More to the point, watch that mouth around me.”
I cleared my throat, hoping to regain control of the antagonistic tone he nearly succeeded in eliminating. “Were you going to invite me to this party? —because I dont do social gatherings.”
“Nikki. I get it. I know what youre going through. The way you’re behaving is not going to do you well. You can’t close yourself off from everyone. Janet told me that you have no other family or friends to be found anywhere. Im trying to be friendly here. I really don’t want to continuously pull the asshole card to get you out of your bitch mode.”
“Isnt that a conflict of interest?”
“Your mother isn’t my patient. I’m…doing her a favor.”
“Whatever that means. The answer is no.”
“I just shot out a number. The camera was worth more than that. How are you going to pay off a priceless debt?”
“You overpaid.
“Are you always such a bitch? Or am I the lone recipient of this attitude?”
“Are you always a cocky ingrate who answers the door for strangers half-dressed?”

“I’m the ungrateful one?” he asked through an incredulous laughter. “Really, Nikki? I see the way your eyes are glued to what I worked my ass off to achieve. See the  way you’re drooling at the big gift between my legs, too. I know it doesn’t bother you. I think you’re only pissed that I’m not completely naked right now.” Slowly licking his lips, he stepped forward. His feverish form pressed against me as he looked down at me. He added in a sexually charged drawl, “I know I’m making your pussy the wettest it’s ever been. Just wait. I’ll get you wetter than a banana in a women's prison.”

Excerpt
Hunter stood in line and watched Cam tend to the few lingering post-lunchtime customers. Cam's smile came a little easier and his stance less guarded.
His body, although still lean, was tighter and a little broader from the yard work at the halfway house. A slight tan colored his skin now, the faint golden tone further accentuating the blue in his eyes and the white of his smile. His hair had a sprinkling of highlights as if the sun had kissed his head. Sunrises gave him hope, but they also seemed to awaken a natural physical beauty that had been hidden for far too long.
"How can I help you? Sir," Cam said when it was finally Hunter's turn at the register.
Hunter leaned over the counter. "You know that drives me nuts."
Cam smiled and grabbed Hunter's tie to pull him closer. "I know." After a quick peck, Cam released him.
Hunter reached over and rubbed Cam's stubble. "Are you letting this grow out?"
Cam shrugged. He looked away and scratched his growing scruff. "It makes me look older."
"Since when do you want to look older?"
Cam shrugged again and fidgeted with the receipts.
Realization finally hit Hunter. He grabbed Cam's chin and forced him to make eye contact. "Are you doing that for me?"
Cam's mouth narrowed and his brows lowered. "There's not much I can do for you. So if growing some hair on my face will make you feel a little less self-conscious, then I'll grow a full fucking beard if I have to."

REVIEW: LEGAL AFFAIRS: AFFIRMATION

Things are off, and I can’t quite put my finger on it. Some things, however, are the same. For example, the sex with Matt is just as nuclear and consistent as it always has been.

Still… I feel like I’m holding onto Matt with my fingertips, like he’s on the verge of slipping away and I don’t know what to do.

When I started these Legal Affairs, I had no way of knowing the depth of feeling that would become involved. I had no way of knowing this man could shatter my existence.

I don’t want to be hurt, so I’m grasping hard and I can only hope that he wants me enough to hang on just as tight.

Our Review---I'm sure if you've been reading this series you've picked up that the titles are a really great guide for what you're getting yourself in to ..and this one is no different. You have no idea how nervous I was to start this. The end. Number six. It would be resolved one way or the other, and I honestly didn't know which was it was going!

This installment resumes with a more tense Mac and Matt. There's just something off about Matt and even though he denies it, Mac can still feel it. She tries like hell to figure it out, fix it, confront it...leave it be..and finally the shit hits the fan...and, well...it's not good. EFFING MATT. Poor Mac. She is in a very tough position. She works for him and longs for him and is incredibly hurt by him.

OMG. Have I ever wanted to strangle then tie up and lick a main character. He is ridiculously frustrating. He is all alpha male that found his equal and partner, but has no idea what in the hell to do with this information. He's been burned. He likes his life....so where does that leave us....in utter hell and agony right up until the very end. Sawyer Bennett has finely crafted the technique of torturing the hell out of me, while making me like it...and I liked this story!

This final book does give us the HEA we all crave but we have to work a little to get there. I really have enjoyed this series and could totally see a spin off with some of the other characters. Macy. Macy needs a story! But until that happens, we are getting an installment it seems from Matt's point of view. I would definitely like to know what that boy was thinking the whole time!
