MUSIC MONDAY (9): Taylor Swift & Justin Timberlake

Music Monday is a weekly feature we love to read by Jessica @ Lovin' Los Libros and since I have music playing at all times of the day, no matter what is going on (even to read) I talked Shel into spreading our music love with you!

Courtney's pick this week:
Taylor Swift's Fearless Album

So Taylor gets a bad wrap, like 99% of the time. But I still love her. I love every song, and while sure  a lot of them are about breaking up or being heartbroken at 2 a.m. there are just as many about a girl's relationship with her mom, her best friends, and being in love. So I love Taylor and I love this album a lot. Listen to Fearless. I want to be fearless, in everything I do.

And as my own little public service announcement after the atrocity that was the VMA's last week...this is a role model for young girls. She embraces it and sure...she dates a lot of people, but doesn't twerk...and for that I am thankful! (Why is twerking a thing? Somebody please make it go away.)

Shelley's pick this week:
Justin Timberlake's Future Sex/Love Sounds

My little sister introduced me to JT as a solo artist and since she is 9 years younger than me I was fairly convinced that I absolutely could not like him. I was certain that my coolness factor would go down by at least 100 if I even tried to listen to him. Then I saw his concert on HBO. Then I sort of crushed on him...like a lot. Now, I fully embrace my love of JT--even if radio stations overplay his new releases by a thousand. He totally rocked the VMA's and I am now on a mission to see him live.

Psychological Thriller/Contemporary Dark Romance

BLURB:
There were still lessons to learn and consequences for the truth!
When Claire Nichols met Anthony Rawlings, she didn’t know they had a past, or that he had plans for her future.Over time, the role of teacher changed—games became reality—and domination turned to desire. Despite an insurmountable history, Claire and Tony found their way back to one another.
Just when they seemed to have it all—love, respect, and the promise of a family—the game master exposed thetruth. Claire’s world once again spun out of control. Unwilling to allow her child to suffer the consequences of an old vendetta, Claire fled...
At one time, Claire was held captive in an opulent mansion—then her incarceration was a cell inside a state penitentiary. Was her new prison—a tropical island—truly less lonely? Perhaps that was the game master’s plan, all along?
Who will save Claire from her oldest nightmare and her newest reality? Will it be Tony? Can he forgive her for leaving him—again? Harry? Will he utilize previously unknown connections to save the woman who infiltrates his thoughts? Maybe Phil? Will his devotion in keeping Claire and her child safe be rewarded?
As the cards are played—sins of the past, innocent victims, and truths are revealed. With compartmentalization no longer an option, is the reality too much? Could there be an even worse isolation?
With the game master dealing from a stacked deck, can this new high-stakes game possibly be won?
When it’s all over and their cards are on the table—SOME will discover their bets were too high—they have nothing left to lose—ALL will learn the crucial lesson—the most important rule—there are CONSEQUENCES for the TRUTH!

*Synopsis

An up and comer trying to make a name for herself...

KYLIE never expected to be stuck on a tour bus with a pampered princess and her boyfriend’s ex.

A troubled artist struggling to hold onto his career...

TRACE thought he was finally getting to do things his way. Until the label added co-headliner Gretchen Gibson, the only person in country music with more issues than him, to his No Apologies tour.

Surrounded by tabloid rumors and people they can't trust, Kylie and Trace need each other more than ever. But the choices they make will change everything.

Because chasing your dreams and following your heart don’t always lead you to the same place…

Caisey was kind enough to answer some questions....

What inspired you to write this book/series?

My love of country music mostly. And I was very curious about Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert touring together when they were at very different places in their careers and how they fell in love. Since they’re probably never going to tell me what happened, I had to make up my own story!

The great thing about New Adult books is that many of the readers are in the same age group as the characters, making it easy to relate to them.  Was there a specific character you related to best?

Ha! Well…I’m 30, so I’m not quite a new adult. ;) But I do relate a great deal to Kylie. I’m not quite as vocal about my feelings as she is but I did move away from home many years ago with no money and very little family. I wish I was as tough as she is though!

Which was your favorite character to write and why?

So far, Trace. He’s a combination of so many of my loved ones and he’s deeply flawed and struggles to accept that he’s worthy of love. His complexities make him a lot of fun to write.

Country Music plays a big part in these books.  Did you base either Trace or Kylie after a specific country artist or artists?

They were inspired by Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert. Trace’s musical style is very similar to Luke Bryan’s. (I got the idea for Girl with Guitar at a Luke Bryan concert). But they’ve become their own people in a lot of ways.

Bouncing off the last Question, if you could pick three Country Songs to sum up Kylie and Trace's relationship what would they be?

Ah! Only three? Okay, let’s see…

It Goes Like This by Thomas Rhett
Hot Mess by Tyler Farr
Damn I Do by Rachel Farley
AND:
Like Jesus Does by Eric Church (sorry I couldn’t pick just 3!)

Besides country, which I think we can tell is a fave, is there any other type of music on your playlist that you like to listen to, to get into the writing mind set?

I listen to a lot of “harder stuff” actually, because of my musician brother. J I love bands like Flyleaf (even though I think they broke up), Paramore, Red, Killswitch Engage, and such. I love the idea of country-rock crossover, which readers will see as Steven Blythe becomes a bigger character. I also love Christina Perri, Jason Mraz, and Katy Perry. My iPod is pretty nuts. Looks like it belongs to five different people.

What made you decide to start writing?  Has it always been something you enjoyed doing?

I never actually “decided” to start. I always just did. Even as a kid and teenager. I love it and can’t imagine my life without it. ;)

Many of the readers out there are also writers.  Do you have any advice for writers who are trying to be published?

I’m always nervous about giving advice because that indicates I know what I’m doing and I don’t know that I’d recommend the way I do things to anyone. The only real advice I can give is finish what you start and don’t give up!

What was the best advice or piece of wisdom given to you?

I’ve gotten so much good advice from the generous and wonderful members of the writing community that it’s hard to pick the best. But the most recent piece of advice I got was “always take the high road.” Something hurtful happened to me recently and I was very upset. Luckily I have a very levelheaded and intelligent mentor who reminded me that this is always the best way to handle difficult situations.

If you could only pick one, who would be your favorite Book Boyfriend?

Oh this is just a mean question. One? ONE??? Ugh. Okay, well this week’s book boyfriend is Cole Pritchett from Elizabeth Lee’s Escaping Me. He reminds me a lot of my husband in that his expectations of himself are pretty low but when you see him for who he really is, he’s a hardworking lovable man with a precious heart. And the tattoos are pretty hot, too! ;)

Are you a wine drinker? If so, what is your favorite type? If not, name your poison? Coffee, Soda, Chocolate? All of the above?

I’m a wine drinker. I prefer sweet whites like Riesling and Moscato. I’m also a coffee drinker but I prefer it iced. And with chocolate syrup on top. J

What characteristics, if any, do you share with Kylie?

We both HATE to ask for help. But sometimes you just gotta!

I'm sure naming your characters is much like naming your children. How did you come up Trace and Kylie? And give us Rae too, as that's my middle name.  :)

I wish I had a cute story about this but I don’t. L Both names just came to me as soon as I started plotting the story. Rae is named after my cousin who is adorable and spunky and just had to have a character named after her!

Tell us about your writing rituals? Silence vs Music? Coffee house vs comfy chair? Mac vs PC? Bananas vs Pears (Just making sure you are paying attention.)

No fruit is involved but I do have a comfy chair and I write in silence unless I find inspiration from a certain song. Sometimes I’ll put on the soundtrack for a book as I edit/revise if I have it created already. I’m a recent convert and use a MAC. Macs for Life!!

E-book vs physical book?

I’m a former English teacher so I’m a paperback/hardcover girl. But I have recently been filling my Kindle and it is handy at bedtime not to need a reading light.

If Physical: Dog ear vs bookmark? (Wow, there are a lot of "vs" in this interview)

If it’s my personal book I might dog-ear a page of something I loved so I can come back, otherwise I always use a bookmark. (Or sticky note, envelope, whatever I have handy!)

If E-book: Are you a highlighter or note taker?

I do both!

Who is your current book boyfriend?

Current one is a secret because I’m writing him!

One look at the cover and you can pretty much guarantee that Courtney and I were very interested in seeing what this book was all about. We are, after all, suckers for scantily clad hot men. Lucky for us, this book seemed to be full of them.

Yep. I think the cover influenced our decision by at least 75%! But...it was very memorable so I couldn't wait to get started!

The story of Makayla and Max (AKA Torment) is one that really explores the issues of communication and trust; Max isn't always big on communicating (at least initially) which then triggers issues with Makayla. Because of a nightmarish relationship with her father and watching her mother struggle to gain every single thing she had, Makayla isn't one to trust easily and she strives to do things on her her terms. Max, who also had some ugliness in his childhood, has worked hard to become who he is. He's skittish to expose Makayla to all sides of him because he apparently had issues with social climbers in the past. So with him withholding information and her finding things out...trouble brews. It doesn't help that she hates violence and he runs and participates in an underground fight club...a club that she ends up working at due to an outstanding debt. It also doesn't help that she likes danger and adrenaline and he is all about her safety and protection. And finally, their chemistry is hot but also triggers flashbacks from her horrendous past. So...as you can see..they have some issues to work through.

I like to think of Torment as a man of many, many layers. When we first meet him I thought of him as very playful and fun. He mostly maintains that throughout the book, but as we blend the man we know as Torment who the man that is also Max outside of the Redemption (his MMA club) it is clear that he is a complicated guy!

Makayla on the other hand I feel like we knew pretty well. We were in her head 100% of the time, but she was also very, very wishy washy. It takes her obviously the entire book to figure out her direction and purpose and life....but I was very glad to see that she made those decisions on her own for herself. While she had Max in mind, she didn't let his affluence make decisions for her or turn her into someone she wasn't. I enjoyed their journey even though she was quite frustrating at times.

This read is a very quick read. Sarah Castille drops you right in to the plot on page one and in order to catch up to what's happening you must read further. She weaves numerous storylines involving Makayla's best friend, Makayla's work life and her debt, the fighters and fight club scene, and Makayla and Max's pasts. It's got a little of everything and is action packed.

There was quite a lot going on wasn't there! I didn't even realize, but all that and more was there. I did thoroughly enjoy their antics in the ring a lot because they were fun and just enjoying each other!

I'm happy to say that this books ends happily and isn't too angst inducing. It's nice to see our book girl and boy find their happily ever after. After all of the insane cliff hangers this week I am so, so, so, so happy about this too! :D
