THE WAGER

Lose a bet, lose your heart...

What is it about a junior-high crush that can send an otherwise intelligent woman into a tailspin? TV reporter Char Lynn wishes she knew. Jake Titus is too rich, too handsome, too arrogant: a trifecta that once lured Char into the best night-and worst morning-after-of her life. Now they've been thrown together in a wedding party. It's awkward, but survivable . . . until Jake stops acting like a jerk, and starts acting like the man she'd always hoped he could be.

If watching your brother marry your best friend is weird, being attracted to your best friend's other best friend is downright bizarre. Unfortunately for Jake, Char hasn't forgotten how he once tossed her aside. Worse still, Jake's already-nutty grandma is even crazier about Char. Cue meet-cute shenanigans and all manner of meddling, and somehow, Jake's falling. For Char. Now all he has to do is make her believe it . . .

~Our Review~
So many of you probably don't know this but Courtney is like the fastest reader...ever. She can be 4 books behind me on our schedule and then before I know it, she's 2 books ahead. GAH! When she started reading The Wager I was reading something not nearly as fun or funny. Actually it wasn't fun or funny at all...so you can imagine my envy and longing to get to this book. Her funny texts were my motivation to finish what I was reading and get to this book.

Hahaha, I'm sorry I'm such a slave to my ADD. I know it must make you absolutely insane! xoxo...but it was so freaking funny I couldn't help but text her...OMG I cannot wait until you get to this book! I love it even more than The Bet I think...and it was amazingly sweet as well! I also told ya Shel, and I'll tell these fine people...these books are a necessary love to Rachel Van Dyken's library...because her other series have ripped my heart to shreds in the past! In the best way possible...because we're masochistic freaks when it comes to the feels apparently.

Within the first pages I was laughing out loud ...shaking with laughter so hard that I woke up my poor husband out of a sound sleep (I bet he rues the day he bought me this Kindle!). Grandma Nadine is the star of this show. She's so funny...the airplane scene, the drugstore scene, the bedroom scenes...I'll never think of Charades the same way...ever again. Grandma is a master manipulator, tell it like it is, fun-loving, crass, young at heart woman and I can only hope that I have some of her spunk and fun when I'm a grandmother. I just love this woman!

That is so funny! Poor J. and really both of our hubs...they never get a break from us reading, but Grandma Nadine is seriously the most awesome 86 year old woman, ever! Don't forget her fine use of ice water...*ahem* She loves her grandsons and the women that they can't get enough of as her own granddaughters, and the family dynamics in this one were so awesome. Even Char's family, as selfish and irritating as they were, were real and gave her life even more substance.

While Grandma Nadine is the star of the show, Char and Jake are what this show is all about. These two have been childhood friends and antagonists for most of their lives. As they grew up from children to teenagers some wires got crossed, mean girls struck, and Jake became a manwhore. So Char wrote him off and he wrote her off but despite their best intentions and constant denials, they end up attracted to each other and unable to stay away. It doesn't hurt that they are the best man and maid of honor  in Kacey and Travis's wedding (see The Bet for their story--and BONUS! we get some great scenes with them) or that Grandma has found all sorts of ways to get them together...all of this just amps up the heat and feelings between these two. Working together to help out with the wedding gives them many opportunities to get to know each other again, have some sweet moments, annoy and frustrate each other, and have some seriously hot kisses. The closer they get to the wedding, the more chaos reigns in their fragile friendship.

After all Jake's shenanigans and douchebaggery in The Bet I am genuinely surprised by how much I loved him. He has lots of secrets that unfold through this journey that made my heart hurt, though in this one the pain that Rach can inflict with her words was minimal. He had a journey to forgive himself for his years of wrongdoing that brought him back down to earth from the rich, beautiful playboy that he knows he is. Between Char and Grandma Nadine though, he really really has his work cut out for him in this family!

Can Jake forgive himself and allow Char into his heart? Can Char forgive Jake and trust him enough to allow him into her heart? Can Grandma Nadine work her magic one more time? Only time will tell in this super funny companion to The Bet. Fingers crossed that Char's sister gets the next *star* treatment from Grandma!

Oh yes. The shenanigans of this Grandma are Epic and I can't wait to see what else she gets to meddling in!

Char woke to yelling. After her odd conversation with Jake where she was at least eighty percent sure he was drunk, she’d faked a headache and gone to bed, skipping dessert and family game night.
With a groan she picked up her cell and looked at the time. One a.m.? Were they still up?
Not thinking, she swung her feet over the side of the bed and hit something soft. It groaned, then cursed as it pulled her feet out from underneath her, causing her to land with a thud against it.
“Jake?” She breathed.
“No, it’s some other half-starved, half-drunk, crazy seagull-talking lunatic. Yes, it’s me, Jake. Who else would be sleeping on your floor?”
“Good point.”
“You can get off me now.” He grunted.
“Why are you talking to seagulls?”
“That’s all you took from that last statement? Not even gonna ask about the whole starving or drunk thing, just straight to the seagulls?”
Char moved away from his warm body and sighed audibly. “It’s simple subtraction.”
“Huh?”
“Which thing is not like the other? Food and alcohol go hand in hand. Seagull taking? Not so much.”
“Either you’re brilliant or drunk. I can’t decide which.” The tone of his voice was gravelly. “Why the hell did you step on me? Better yet, why are you out of bed?”
“I heard a noise.”
“It’s called breathing, Char. Some people need to do it in order to live.”
“Shut up, you ass.” She pushed him down and walked toward the door. “It was more than that. It was like a scratching or something.”
“So, we have a squirrel problem.” He sounded bored.
“You hate squirrels.”
“Let them get me! You hear that, squirrels? I’m ready for you!” Jake lifted his hands into the air and sighed.
“How much beer did you have?”
With a curse he struggled to his feet. “Clearly not enough. Otherwise I would still be passed out right now, instead of having this ridiculous conversation with you.”
He moved into the moonlight.
Char’s mouth went completely dry.
The man was a god.
How had she forgotten that?
Thick-corded muscles lined his abs and plunged into his pajama pants. Every part of him was smooth and tan. Just… way too beautiful to be real. She stepped forward. Was it possible for a man to be Photoshopped? In real life? In person?
Curious, she pressed a hand to his chest. He was so damn warm, and hard. Dang, but his body was hard.
“Char?” His voice was hoarse. “Are you sure you’re not sleep-walking?”
Jerking her hand back, she laughed nervously. “I thought I saw a, um, scratch, just there.” She pointed to the perfectly smooth skin on his chest.
“A scratch?” Jake’s eyebrows rose. “Really? Well, if you’re so concerned I’m sure I can take off my pants and you can check everywhere else. Wouldn’t want me not waking up in the morning. I’ve heard scratches can turn septic.” He winked.
“Ass.” Char pushed against him and reached for the door, opening it a crack.
“Char,” Jake groaned. “I’m exhausted. Like I said, it’s probably nothing—”
With a curse, Char hit him directly in his hard stomach and told him to shut up, then pointed to the hallway.
Sure enough, Kacey was making her way down the hall toward Travis’s room. His door was open. He was mouthing directions to her and pointing to the floor. Did he expect her to army crawl? And then he made a motion with his hands and cupped his ear.
“Hmm,” Char whispered. “Squeaky floor?”
“Yup.” Jake chuckled; his breath was warm on her neck.
“You know where the spots are?”
“Oh yeah.” He moved past her out into the hall and looked smugly from Travis to Kacey.
Kacey’s eyes narrowed. She made a cutting signal with her hand across her throat then flipped him off.
Like a lunatic, Travis was making obscene gestures toward Jake. It looked like he was threatening him, but Char couldn’t tell. It was like watching a mime get angry. His hands were everywhere in the air, but it was too comical to mean anything.
And Grandma, bless her heart, was sitting in a recliner in the middle of the hallway. Mouth ajar, snoring louder than sin. Her leopard print pajamas practically glowed in the moonlight, and her face was covered with one of those creepy sleep masks with the eyes painted on as if to say, she’s always watching.
Jake took a tentative step toward Grandma.
Kacey waved her hands frantically.
Char covered her mouth to hide her laugh.
Kacey glared in her direction.
A loud creak sounded down the hall. Jake took another step. The second creak was even louder.
Travis began banging his head softly against the wall.
Kacey looked like she’d started praying.
And then, all of a sudden, Grandma moved. Without pulling the mask up, she pulled a gun from underneath the cushion and pointed it directly at Travis.
“You sneaking out, son?”
Char’s mouth dropped open as Jake hurried back to their room and stood near safety.
“I, uh…” Travis closed his eyes. “Do it. Just kill me. I’m miserable enough as it is. Sorry Kacey, I can’t do it. I can’t make it; if that makes me weak, so be it.”
“Kacey!” Grandma scolded, pulling back her mask so she could see. “And to think! I was blaming poor Travis for this fiasco, but look at you! Halfway down the hall! You little hussy.”

Don't forget to check out book 1: The Bet

"I have a proposition for you." Kacey should have run the minute those words left Seattle millionaire Jake Titus's mouth. It's been years since Kacey's seen her childhood friend Jake, but the minute Jake mentions his ill grandmother, Kacey is ready to do anything for the sweet old woman. And if that means pretending they're engaged for her sake-so be it.

But Kacey wasn't counting on Jake's older brother Travis still being there. She calls him "Satan" for a reason: she's never forgotten the way he teased and taunted her. Yet when they meet again, Travis's gorgeous smile is a direct hit to her heart . . . and Kacey's more confused than ever. As the days pass, only one thing starts to become alarmingly clear-she never should have accepted Jake's deal . .

REVIEW: THE BET BY RACHEL VAN DYKEN

"I have a proposition for you..."
Kacey should have run the minute those words left Seattle millionaire Jake Titus's mouth. Instead, she made a deal with the devil in hopes of putting her past behind her once and for all.
Four days.
She could do four days!
But she wasn't counting on Jake’s older brother Travis being there to witness their farce of an engagement.
One thing is for certain.
One brother is right for her.
One wants a lifetime.
And one is in league with the devil.
She should have gotten Jake’s signature in blood.

Where to Find The Bet:

Where to Find Rachel Van Dyken:

***3.5 Stars***

This is the perfect book to read after you've experienced what Courtney and I call a "book hangover" (those books that linger with you and won't let you go)...here's why:

1) The grandmother. She's is hilarious. I've established on almost every review, I think, that I'm a huge fan of strong female leads. In this book, she's it. She has the wisdom of her years, she has no problem saying what's on her mind, and she's not afraid to manipulate situations to her benefit. She totally steals every scene she's in and I found myself eagerly waiting for her to show up and give her two cents on things.

2) The brothers. Their sibling rivalry was not quite what I expected--in a good way. There was the resentment that most siblings feel toward each other...you know, the one where you see the shortcomings of your sibling but you feel like no one else does?. It wasn't too intense, almost a friendly sibling rivalry if that even makes sense. It was this rivalry that started the race to when over Kacey's affections, and thus the bet, to begin with. They were funny and warm and evenly matched in their jabs at each other.

3) Kacey. She seemed like the perfect girl next door heroine. She had no idea how beautiful she is, no idea that she's the object of Travis's affections, she's also hard working, insecure about relationships, and in need of some help--hence her need to the situation she agrees to with Jake, the guy who jilted her and her former best friend. In addition to all of this, she was funny. I loved her interior running commentary about all of the things going on around her.

If you need a funny, light read to erase a 'book hangover', I promise you this is a superb choice!

**4 Stars**

After reading the blurb for The Bet I honestly had no idea what to expect, but being a huge Rachel Van Dyken fan I knew I had to read it ASAP! Never in a million years did I expect it to be a romantic comedy. And trust me, Shelley is right, we definitely were in need of something to pull us out of our book hangover, and this came at exactly the perfect moment!

1) Grandma Nadine. She was a freaking hoot. You never knew what was going to come out of her mouth and the scenes with her going over to the neighbors house just made me laugh so hard. If there is anything grandchildren do not want to know, it's that their 70+ grandparent is still "active." Their mortification was priceless. On the other hand though, she totally played them. Jake, Travis, and Kacey all thought that they were forging their path and having to go it alone a lot of the time, but really Grandma was always one step ahead of them. She is now the official reason I recommend this book. I hope I have as much spunk as her when I am her age!

2) Travis and Jake. Having read Rachel's Seaside series (I LOVE IT, GO READ IT!) I had a feel for how she does love triangles involving siblings. This was nowhere near as heavy as Alec and Dimitri's issues, but it was still a lot of fun seeing them rediscover their relationship with each other as well as navigating their feelings for Kacey. Jake...oh how I wanted to smack him upside his beautiful blonde head. He definitely had some growing up to do, and needed Grandma to re-teach him a lesson on how to treat women, but that journey as well as navigating where he went wrong with Kacey was a sweet thing to read. Travis...poor guy. He started out as a little boy having a crush on Kacey doing that "I'm mean to you because I like you" thing. Problem was that she never got the memo that he didn't hate her. His part of this story was a lot different than Jake's but, well, I was 90% rooting for him. When you get to the scene with the eggs...you will probably laugh yourself silly like I did.

3) Kacey. Poor girl has not had an easy few years. And Jake hasn't made them any easier, whatsoever. That she agreed to his hair-brained scheme at all was a miracle, but doing it for Grandma made it an offer she couldn't refuse. I thoroughly enjoyed her giving the guys hell, but also liked her journey to finding herself and what she really wanted. She never wanted to be away from the only "family" she had left, and circumstances, ahem* Jake, made her think that she couldn't. She was funny, and her insecurities were not a turnoff for this story, which was nice. Her character felt genuine.

The Bet is perfect for a vacation or lazy day read, or like we've said, pulling you out of that love/hate relationship we all have with book hangovers. It was fun, quick, and made me laugh.
