Everything was falling into place. Even amongst all the chaos of Washington D.C., Brooklyn and Logan found each other.

Brooklyn never expected Logan...and as it always seems to happen with her...things fell apart. She has been through this before...was she strong enough to do it again?

On the outside, Logan was the epitome of wealth and confidence. Many knew his name but few knew his secrets. He never expected Brooklyn...but now she's walked away. He knew what they shared mattered to her...and she...she mattered to him more.

OUR REVIEW:

Surrounded is the second book in this series and I was really happy with the way it started. We immediately hear from Logan and he spends the first few chapters reminding us of the events that led up to the cliffhanger at the end of book 1, Unsettled. It was nice to hear what his thoughts were and how he felt about Brooklyn because in book one, we were only privy to her thoughts. I agree. Things ended very abruptly, and it was good to see what he was doing and thinking and how some things that would come to pass, well...happened. (Trying not to be spoilery...so that sounds eloquent as hell, yes?)

Within chapters, we reach the point where book 1 ended and suddenly you want to just smack Brooklyn for her hasty reactions. The who, why, how's of the Logan + pregnant other girl become very clear, very quickly. From this point until almost the end, we follow her retreat and his actions to try to figure out what the hell is happening. She made me mad. Truly. After everything that happened in Unsettled...I just got so angry with her, and everything that happens afterward. I'm not sure, but I think this caused some of my feelings for the book and how I felt about it overall...so I think that will be a very subjective reaction for every person who reads this novel.

There is drama. And sexiness. And then more drama. I guess sometimes I felt like it was a little immature..the way that Brooklyn handled things bugged me a little. For someone who found trust to be integral in a relationship, she sure had little faith in Logan. Luckily, Logan was willing to try to make things work out and forced communication (you know, like grown ups do). Hahaha. How many of our characters that we love ever really act their age when it comes to drama and angst, or more so in this case, the melodrama. I think sometimes when I think of these high powered CEO's and these girls, they are older. Or maybe, because I act more mature than these chicks that are my age. Or maybe I'm the jerk. I don't know! It makes it hard though sometimes, to believe a character, when one teensy little moment of clarity would clear up so much. Gah, so conflicted.

This second books is a super quick read. There are spots where I felt it had nice dialogue and pacing and sometimes it felt a little too rushed or flat. Overall, though, it was nice to see how their story ended. Ditto. I am afraid to say that my expectations might have clouded how I ended up feeling about the book...and I try my best to not do that! I liked the book, but something was just missing for me personally to just flat out love it.

OUR REVIEW:
Unsettled is a story that centers around Brooklyn, a twenty five year old woman living in D.C. after she fled the West Coast for reasons that are revealed in good time in this book. She clearly has been hurt before, and so she is very abrasive and really hard to get to know. She has a job that she hates, a boss that she hates, and is living with her best friend Alex and her significant other Jay.

You know..all of that is true..sucky job with a sucky boss..and trying to get over a broken heart...and I bet that many people would identify with her plight. It's not pretty..sexy...funny..but true.

I had a lot of things that worked well for me with this book, and several things that didn't. The main issue for me was the pace. The first 30% of the book or so was setting up for...something...but I wasn't sure exactly what. This made more sense to me, as I re-read the synopsis and remembered that this is only book one in a new series. So whether or not this will hinder the series in the future, and gain new fans will be determined...because I obviously haven't read the next installment. BUT it gained steamed midway, with a lot of the kinks that I was having trouble with smoothed out. S.C. seemed to gain her footing with her characters and we got some conflict going.

To an extent, I agree ...it was a slow start but having read the book, I understand a little more as to why we needed some of the backstory. The last half of the book went really quickly; there was more plot and less of what I like to call "pretty prose" (unnecessarily pretentious or wordy passages or lots of detail, in my opinion, can get in the way of the story and it felt like that for a while, at least at the beginning). The novel's plot and prose really picked found its footing and became more and more engaging and easy to read.

I think we both agreed the beginning was definitely more 2 1/2 to 3 star caliber, but definitely rate the second half a solid 4...so it does get there. But you have to have patience with while you do it. I also look at Unsettled #1 as Brooklyn's story...and I have a strong feeling that #2 is going to be much more Logan-centric. I did appreciate very much that while Logan is a young millionaire entrepreneur, he doesn't come off as the usual egotistical arse that I've had lately.

For me it started as a solid 3 and the ending was a definite 4. It ends on a cliffhanger and I'll be very interested in seeing where she goes with the next book. I hope to know even more about Logan (as I feel like I know Brooklyn fairly well) and for the love of god...get rid of that douche, Damon. (Oh and more Alex, please!).
