REVIEW: If You Dare by Alessandra Torre

Equal parts Dexter and 50 Shades, this is the eagerly awaited new novel from A. R. Torre, author of the award winning erotic thriller, The Girl in 6E.

The rules are the same. I can't open the door. I can't leave. I can't kill anyone.

The only difference is, I don't set the rules anymore. Guards in grey uniforms do. It is everything I never wanted and everything I always deserved. I write to you now, from a prison cell. My home for the next twenty to thirty years.

That's the going term for murder.

Our Review:

Shel: Alessandra Torre, you surprised me. I truly thought I had an idea of how If You Dare would go down and instead this happened:

Shel: I have no words, really. None. But I need words because I'm supposed to be writing this review about how everyone should read this book [SIDE NOTE: everyone should totally read this book] but all I can do is think about what I just read and how to explain it without spoiling it and it's

Shel: IMPOSSIBLE. This review is impossible. Sort of. Not really. Because I can tell you what I liked about this book without being spoilerific, I think. Maybe?

Shel: 1. I loved how fierce Deanna is. She's 100% herself and if someone doesn't like it? Welp, she has zero fucks to give. She's intense. She's a little crazy..maybe a lot crazy. She's fearless--almost too much so. She's also so freaking emotionally numb/bankrupt/in denial that I wanted to shake her, send her to therapy, and smother her with love. As much as I admired her strength, I felt so sad that she was living in her head, in her fear, and in her unwillingness to even see if she could improve.  Court: Deanna, Deanna, Deanna. What to say about Deanna that hasn't already been said. When we first met her in The Girl in 6E (and even before that in On Me, in Me, Dead Beneath Me - we had no idea that her journey would arc in the way that it has. The best I can say as Shel did without spoiling it for you is that her journey is a wild, in your face, oh-my-holy-hell-I'm going to die if I don't know what happens next roller coaster ride. And every single page, and every single chapter was written in such that I was constantly thinking...will my prediction be correct? Probably not, right? Because if I'm thinking it...that little thread that is dangling to be pulled will probably just unleash all sorts of stuff to fall on me. And that's how I feel about the rest of what happened!

Shel: 2. I loved Mike. I have no idea if all of the things he did can actually be done but I loved that Alessandra Torre made a character who could do anything from his wheelchair. I love how much he cared for Deanna. I love how loyal and protective he was of her. And if this series continues, I would love to see more of him. Court: It is odd how conflicted I feel about each of the men in this book. Each one brought something completely different, and completely something she needed to her life. I love though that Mike was consistent in his loyalty.

Shel: 3. Jeremy/Derek--these two intrigued me. I feel like there's more story for them although that could be wishful thinking? I'd like to say more about what I'm thinking but I think that would be too revealing so I'll just say that I am still thinking about these two and am very curious about what they're thinking right now. Court: Ok...so we obviously need to chat. But me too. If there was one thing that I wish were more "complete" if you will, it would be Derek. I again can't say much as to why I'm wondering so much about him, but I feel like if I were ever to think of a voice and how it sounds like...the description of this guy can bring many a thought. And, besides...I think he needs more pages too. As does Jeremy. Eep!

Shel: And finally, I have to say that you, Alessandra Torre, just keep surprising me in the best ways. I love that you are completely fearless in what you write and you continue to try different things.

Court: Wow. Could that be more perfect. AT has been absolutely fearless in the journey she takes in each book. Pushing the boundaries. Pushing her writing. Pushing us as a reader. Just when we think we have this whole thing figured out, she changes the game...and we just have to hang on tight. And it is brilliant.

Thank you for always making me a happy reader,
Shelley

And until next time, Alessandra and y'all...she keeps us coming back for more, more, more.

18712934Equal parts Dexter and 50 Shades, this is the eagerly awaited follow-up to the daring erotic thriller, The Girl in 6E, by A.R. Torre.

My rules:

1. Don't leave the apartment.

2. Never let anyone in.

3. Don't kill anyone.

The rules were simple and I broke them.
Now I must face the consequences.
Everyone else must face me.

Shel: I thought I was prepared for DO NOT DISTURB but I really don't think I was. I think it's one of Alessandra Torre's darkest novels yet. AT quickly slips you in the mind of Deanna--killer, friend, lover, and cam-girl extraordinaire and it's interesting and disturbing. We get a bird's eye view of her dealing with her murderous tendencies as she puts herself or, at times, finds herself in new and uncontrollable situations.

Court: You know what? I thought I was too...but, alas I was not. Though I have spent the better part of the last 3 hours devouring this book. And it was intense, satisfying, insane, and the biggest roller coaster ride of emotions I have went on with a book in a while. I suspect that most of you won't have a clue what you're getting into...especially with it being full of eroticism that will make you cringe and blush and probably hot at the same time (AT has a way of pulling that out of you) and at the same time...it is seriously twisted thriller that will make you want to live in a damned bubble. Or it does me. Whew. Carry on

Shel: On the surface you don't want to like Deanna because her strong desires to kill are so foreign and strange and graphic but at the same time you feel for her because you know it's something she's fighting so hard to overcome. You know that she wants to be 'good' and not harm anyone but she doesn't seem to know how to turn her compulsions off. It's with these conflicted feelings that you watch her careful control unravel..and unravel it does. Without going into spoiler details, know that this book is not for the delicate minded--her fantasies and reality become more horrific as the novel progresses and when we get to THE PART where it all goes to hell in a hand basket, it's the stuff horror movies are made of. Court: It is. It is brilliant. A.R. Torre's writing is flawless in how she sets the pace and tone at a breakneck speed, and you're on the train, and you know it's about to go over the edge of the cliff...and you can't and won't stop it. Why? Because she won't let you. Deanna will insert her claws into you...and not let go. And that is exactly where she wants you...and she'll smile while doing it.

Shel: I know some people will not like Deanna; they'll hate her and find her unforgiveable. I found I felt incredibly sorry for her. I hate that her therapy isn't helping (...and I'm the only one who thinks that Derek is SKETCHY? hmmmm--I hope that is addressed in book 3); I hate that she feels so alone and unable to really have people in her life who she can trust; and I hate that she has to do some pretty damning things and will inevitably have to live with her decisions.
Even with all of the grimness of this novel, there were definitely some bright spots. Knowing that Mike and Jeremy supported and adored her and were looking out for her definitely gave some relief to some of those tougher chapters. Also seeing Deanna take some risks and try some new things was nerve wracking and interesting. I also loved see her claim her inner badass when she needed too--I  love badass women. Court: She is a badass at heart...and psycho and crazy, and above all, damaged. If I am wrong in still rooting for her as the heroine of this love story, then I don't want to be right. I was rooting also for some unexpected players in this (definitely cannot expand upon that, but I hope you notice some broadening of horizons in the department of people she talks to regularly). Even though there are some "whoa" things that will seriously keep you flipping the pages at warp speed, there is some funny times, some great moments for my techy at heart self, and I loved it. It's dark though. So, watch out for that.

Shel: AT definitely left a lot of questions to be answered about D+J, the doctor, and Mike (and Alaska guy) and with a third book slated for this series, I am curious to see how she tackles these things. Court: Girl, it can't come out soon enough! But no pressure...right? Because it's still being written.
