REVIEW: Alex in Wonderland by Max Monroe

OUR REVIEW:

Shel: Let me tell you a little story-- a little confession, if you will. When Max Monroe tiptoed and then exploded onto the scene we were both inundated with work and personal stuff and reviewing for the blog. So with life sucking the life out of us, we let our curiosity about this writing duo sit on the back burner. One series came and went with tons of praise and I was intrigued. Another series started and once again we were not in a position to start it and at this point I was feeling like we'd missed our chance--because in a way we did; we missed being in on the ground floor of this fun seemingly irreverent mysterious writing team. Dammit to hell. But then the blog gods smiled upon us and we were able to join their fans in a new series. Hurray for us! Court: Ditto! Even having read this now, I'm still at a state of wonder at who they are (who probably isn't at this point!?) But I promise not to get crazy about it or anything (LOL). They've really got a knack for a beautiful cover, a clever blurb and beautiful teasers that get us interested and definitely makes us want to dive in immediately!

Shel: If you're new to this writing duo, buckle up baby and get ready for a ride; Alex in Wonderland is wild. There are all sorts of criminal types, backroom deals, sordid parties and the like. There's also a fantastically larger than life Matt, and his Alex--really a perfectly sarcastic and somehow wide eyed innocent wrapped up in a California girl's body. These two were incredibly fun to read. They were funny and tender and sexy and the genuine affection they had for each other was strangely heartwarming, considering the backdrop of their romance; but with Matt as the king to Alex's queen I can tell you that I could read about their illicit shenanigans for a long time and not get bored. They had the perfect balance of fun and romance and crime to keep me glued to the page. Court: I'll admit I thought some of the names were a little kitschy at first. That's probably a little bit over the top even for me, but as we got into the story and got games going that really sucked us in it helped forget about that. How they meet is a fantasy and then how things progress from there are what our romance dreams are made of. We love the seedy underworld stories with mafia like entendre's and this was a book that was really made for me and you, girl.

Shel: As noted at the beginning, this is the first Max Monroe novel we've read so I can't compare it to anything else, but what I can say is that I'm a huge fan of how entertaining Alex in Wonderland was! And I'm definitely looking forward to what they do next with this series of stand alone novels. Court: Me too! And getting into what they've published so far so that we can know all there is to know about MM writing...gimme Shel!

Blurb:

I’m Matt Hadder.
I’ve been called ruthless, savage—even brutal—by the men and women who work for me. And I’ve earned my reputation.

Wonderland Inc., a party planning organization for every major player in the world, is Oz, and I’m its Wizard. I can make anything—drugs, prostitutes, deals—appear for a night and disappear just as quickly.

This doesn’t make me good or bad—it makes me essential.

Wonderland Inc. was my life, until a beautiful contradiction of innocence and impurity, obedience and rebelliousness named Alex Little stepped in and turned both of our worlds upside down.

Welcome to Wonderland, Alex.
A place where everything appears normal.
But we’re all mad.

Tiny Tease:
“It is. It’s just…jarring.”
“You don’t find it natural?” I asked, putting a hand to her back and making her step closer. The pleasure girl moaned and writhed, her skin a flushed rose of arousal as Spade continued to play with her. Lou Diamond had joined them now too, feasting on her breasts and stroking his cock while kneeling on the plush red couch behind her opened leg.
Alex shook her head and nodded at the same time, her every nerve ending buzzing with confusion over what she’d been taught was appropriate, and the very opposite way she felt.
“That could be you,” I whispered, leaning into her back and grazing the shell of her ear with my breath.
She shivered—for about a millisecond—before bounding away and turning to meet my eyes, panic stark in hers. “Me? Do that? Like…right here? In front of people?” she stuttered. “No. No. Um, no.”
Excitement shot down my spine at her anxiousness. “No?” I questioned, careful to keep my tone reproachful. I wanted her to feel pressured—just to see if she could withstand it.
After a brief pause, she confirmed with a curt, determined shake of her head. “No.”
At six foot six and two hundred and seventy pounds, I was nothing short of physically intimidating. I was impressed by her backbone.
“Okay,” I agreed easily. Her eyes widened, and her plump lips parted. I took pleasure in her surprise.
