But not even a string of one-night stands can ease the hurt. Football is all he has left. Then fate leads him back to the scene of the crash, and into the arms of a kind, gorgeous woman who sees past his façade to the man he once was . . . and can be again.

When a chance roadside encounter brings Derek into her life, veterinarian Hayden Hunter isn’t fooled by his bad attitude: All bark and no bite, he’s hiding a wounded heart beneath that gruff demeanor. And Hayden wants to be the one to kiss it all better. Soon they both find that a dose of passion is potent medicine. But when a hidden enemy lashes out at Hayden, Derek steps up to do what he does best: put his body on the line in the name of love.

He is unlike any man she's ever met. He came into her life and turned it completely upside down. Everything is perfect. That is, until one fateful night.
A night that would tear the Watson family apart, never to be put back together again.
A night that would send Xander away to prison for life.
"How about twenty questions?" I ask.
"I hate twenty questions."
"How about five questions, then?"
He cracks a smile and lifts an eyebrow. "How about three?"
"Deal!"
"So, have I mentioned how much I fucking hate Tuesdays?" Brandi's voice cuts right between us. Xander looks relieved.
Me? Not so much. "Damn it, Brandi!"
"What?"
"Oh nothing. Can you grab me Fireball though? Pretty please. Two of them." I look at Xander. "You're taking one."
"Three. I am too, bitch! Fuck Tuesdays!" Brandi calls out from across the bar as she begins filling the shot glasses from the Fireball chiller.
"Question one. You said you’ve been traveling for a while now, right? Do you ever get tired of it? Ever feel like settling?”
"Damn. Starting out with the heavy hitters, huh?" He eyes the shot glasses as if hoping it will somehow make them fill faster.
"Need me to go easier on you? Maybe a finger or two first before I go in with the whole fist?"
He looks at me in disbelief. "Did you really just say that?"
"Just answer the question, two fingers or three?"

OUR REVIEW~~

Melanie Harlow has done it again; I found myself laughing and crying (of laughter) and unable to put Man Candy down. The first chapter had me snickering and wondering what in the world was going on and after a quick fill in of their back story I was fully engrossed in how Quinn and Jaime were going to play out.

These two were delightfully playful--their "games" cracked me up. I loved their banter and the way they'd describe each other ("the smolder", I died). Amidst all of their fun times was Jaime's stubborn ideas/ rules about what she thinks of relationships and her constant conflict about how she wanted this thing between her and Quinn to play out. Needless to say, once Quinn decided to pursue her he had his work cut out for him and it was his patience and his astute observations about her that won me (and Jaime) over. I loved that he knew when to push and when to give her space and when to mercilessly tease her (I laugh just thinking about these two and their shenanigans). I also enjoyed seeing Jaime work through her confusion and conflict -as stubborn and frustrating as her ideas about relationships should or should not be, it was that much more rewarding when she began to step outside of her comfort zone and allow herself to enjoy her time with Quinn (and how could she not? Their chemistry was hot af).

Melanie Harlow's novels are a definite must read; she has such a gift when it comes to romantic comedy. Man Candy is the perfect blend of what she does best--romance, comedy, sexiness, and friendships --and throw in Quinn's mad Instagram skills and this is a fantastically sweet, quick, steamy, and funny read (perfect for an upcoming beach trip).

Synopsis:

He’s back.
Not just back in town, but living in the flat right beneath mine. And he looks good enough to eat, which is just one more reason to stay away from him.
But I can’t resist.
The sex is incredible (pretty sure we’ve shaken the house right off its foundation), but he can’t fool me—not this time. A degree in marketing and five years in advertising have taught me that “true love” is a fairy tale used to sell lipstick, diamonds, and perfume. It doesn’t exist.
He thinks I’m wrong, and he wants to prove it.
I think he’s crazy, so I dare him to try.
It might be the biggest mistake of my life.

Excerpt:

“It’s so good to see you, Jaime,” he said. “You look great.” “You too,” I said before I could stop myself. I didn’t want him to think I still cared—in fact, I wanted him to know I wasn’t fooled by his charm. I wasn’t that silly little girl anymore, the one who’d doodled his name in her notebooks and blushed when he said hi at school and cried herself to sleep when he asked another girl to his prom. That silly little girl was gone, and in her place was a confident, smart, professional woman who knew her worth and, even better, the truth about love. No more stars in her eyes. But why did he have to be so hot? OK, pull yourself together. No drooling. “I’m so glad this worked out.” Quinn let me go but stood too close, his feet planted wide and his arms crossed over his chest. He wore jeans, a gray knit pullover that hugged his muscular chest and arms, and his feet were bare. His hair was damp and messy on top, just like it had been the last time I’d seen him in person. His full lower lip made me want to bite it. Maybe even draw blood. “Sorry, I just got out of the shower,” he said sheepishly, ruffling his hair. “Want to come in and catch up? Or maybe go out for a drink? I just need to throw some shoes on.” “No.” Trying desperately to shove the image of him in the shower from my mind, I elbowed past him and trudged up the stairs. My cheeks were hot, which meant they were probably turning scarlet. They ruined my poker face every time. “Come on, it’s Friday!” “I have work to do.” He was naked a few minutes ago. And wet. “Did you have a bad day?” “No.” Rivulets of water streaming over those muscles. “You already have plans tonight?” “No.” Steam rising as he stroked himself beneath the spray. “You don’t love me anymore?” I froze as the shower fantasy exploded into bits, replaced by a humiliation that paralyzed me, one foot on the top step, one hand on the banister. Slowly, I turned my head and glared at him over one shoulder. Now the grin cocked up on one side. “Because you used to, you know. You told me.” “You need to forget about that.” “Have you?” “Yes,” I snapped. “That was a long time ago. Back when I was young and impressionable and believed in love.” His brows went up. “You don’t believe in love anymore?” “Not the romantic kind. That’s a fantasy used to sell things like lipstick and roses and diamonds.” “Pretty jaded for twenty-seven, aren’t you?” I resumed heading up the stairs. “I’m not jaded, Quinn. I’m just a realist.” And I’ve been burned before, trusting guys way less attractive than you. He said nothing more, and I let myself into my flat. As soon as the door was shut behind me, I leaned back against it, exhaling and fanning my face. He still got to me. That was so aggravating. I mean, how was I supposed to sleep at night? Quinn Rusek was one fine piece of man candy, and I had a sweet tooth for him that wouldn’t quit. But he’d made fun of me! Again! A nice guy would have at least pretended not to remember what I’d said. Or maybe apologized for humiliating me. Or not have brought it up at all! What an asshole. A hot asshole—the worst kind. Curse you, Alex, and your generous heart. And curse you, Quinn, for getting under my skin again. You stay away from me. But a traitorous little part of me hoped he wouldn’t. (Bet you can guess which part.)

REVIEW: Broken Prince by Erin Watt

OUR REVIEW:

Shel: Warning #1: DO NOT start reading this at 11pm unless you have absolutely nothing to do the next day or you will find yourself going without sleep and without people to commiserate with. Fortunately I have summers off and could stay up until all hours of the night obsessing over this book, so I did. Unfortunately, no one else was up so I had to deal with my anxiety and 'what ifs' and other things by sending texts to Courtney knowing she was sleeping (so in other words, I had to be a big girl and deal with it BY MYSELF--insert despair emoji here).  Court: Let the record show I told her that she'd be up alllll night and wouldn't stop! Hahaha. That's the best book though, that even though life functions the next day will be minimal...it will totally be worth it.

Shel: Warning #2 If you haven't read Paper Princess you probably should start with that novel and that review ( posted here ) and not go much further in this review. We're going to do our damnedest to not spoil anything here for Broken Prince but may mention some things from Paper Princess in passing and we'd hate to ruin your experience with either book, so read on at your discretion. Court: I concur. Definitely should not read this book without reading that one, because your experience will be so much better. Be #royallyruined properly, please.

Shel: I honestly could write an entire post of 'warnings' about this book. For instance, this book will #royallyfuckingruinyou but let's face it, Elle Kennedy and Jen Frederick are the two who are really ruining us. These two crafty devils are ruining us for any book that has the unlucky position of being read after a Royals book. JFC. I'd barely recovered from my Paper Princess hangover and here I am completely book drunk and absolutely worthless because Broken Prince nailed it (and nailed me). I swear to god whatever writing voodoo they have going on with this series is addictive and I hope they never ever stop; I will willingly submit to their voodoo magic anytime, anywhere. Every single piece and part of Broken Prince (and PP for that matter) work--the pacing, the dialogue, the characters you love to hate and hate to love ...and love to love are superbly developed, and the plot gives you enough detail and information to answer the questions you've been wondering about only to be gasping and grasping for answers at the end (hellooooooo cliffhanger). Court: Yep. We have many lists of characters. Ones that we're watching. People who have the "C" word dangling above their head, if labels were to dangle over their head. And I think it should be noted that I've seen some shade thrown around out there about this series, but the best part that I love about it is that it is outside of the reality of my high school years...suspend reality, and chillax and enjoy it please. I have a lot of nostalgia for when you're newly dating and everything is new and exciting, especially things you *haven't* done...and that made me smile like a thousand times brighter than the sun, because it was FUN and sexy and sweet! And the mean girls are mean, and the boys that we love in this series have some seriously messed up heads and issues, and I want to hold them to my chest (ahem, haha) and solve some of their mommy issues.

Okay, /rant, and continue on.

Shel: I could warn you that you're going to catch a very solid case of the feels and it's gonna hit you from every direction--horror, tenderness, pride, anger, frustration, hilarity and more. Court: I think that is a big like factor...Erin Watt et al make me feel *everything* - every single emotion felt, and honestly at any given time for any given character. Which annoys me when I want certain people to make smart choices, and they don't. And then do something brilliant a few pages later, only to annoy me again. But, well rounded plot, and new questions, and gasp worthy moments at the ready...and I read this thing at warp speed.

Shel: I could warn you about how much you're going to fall in love with this series all over again and feel wholly unprepared with your anxiousness at waiting for the next one to come out. I could warn and warn and warn or I could just tell you about my texts to Courtney while I read and she slept; I basically made a series of lists--

The very short list of people I liked (it changed the further I read).
The increasing list of people I wanted to bitch slap or cunt punt (this list held steady for a large part of the book).
The list of places in the book when I had a verbal gasp (several).
The list of creative cursing I used and used often from pretty much chapter one (I pulled out some oldies but goodies for this round of reading).
The list of emojis and gifs that littered our texts back and forth..and for that matter, a good number of exclamation points too.
And my constant comparison to 90210 that slid into Melrose Place and ended in a very 1980's nighttime soap opera comparison a la Dallas or Falcon Crest. The drama and angst and good times were on point and would make a fantastic nighttime soap.

Court: HAHAHAHAHA. OMG. That is amazing. And somewhat makes us seem a little bit insane, but baby, we're crazy - and we like it. So...mostly I wish I could re-read both of these books for the first time again. I wish that the Royals were real. And...just know, that you can come crying to us whether you love it or hate it, we'd love to chat - but do think you'll love it, hate it, love it some more...and then just make a mess of your hair in frustration because it sucks you in, and then we have to wait for another. But, wait we shall. Brilliant, Erin Watt - just bloody brilliant.

Shel: All of this to say that I am in awe of what the duo who make up Erin Watt have done. I'm absolutely addicted to this series and I cannot wait for the next book to be published. Thank you, ladies, for giving us a series that reminds us of how much fun this book world is. Court: Yes! These pages hold gold in the form of words, and I cannot tell you how refreshed as a reader I am every time I read them. And then am hungover trying to find the next magical thing to read. Sigh. JUST READ IT ALREADY!

REVIEW: Say You'll Stay by Corinne Michaels

Say You’ll Stay

Author: Corinne Michaels
Release Date: June 20, 2016

Genre: Contemporary Romance

If you're looking to get in on the ground floor of a new Corinne Michaels series, Say You'll Stay is a her newest book with the promise of at least 2 more to come.

In this first book in the series we're introduced two families, Presley's and Zach's ranching families, getting a taste of their histories in the small town of Bell Buckle, but mainly what we observe is Presley and Zach and their messed up relationship. These two have a wonderful and yet painful past that is now made difficult with Presley's current loss and having to deal with coming home...and all of the secrets she's keeping to herself. Throw in the fact that Zach is now dating Presley's arch-nemesis and things get complicated really fast; these two have a history together that they can't seem to escape though Presley actively tries to fight it, a fight she absolutely loses (thank god).

Corinne Michaels gives us not only a love note to second chances at love but she also gives us a loving look at the beauty (and frustrations) of small town living in the south. Presley's immersion into both proves to be hesitant and sometimes infuriating--will she accept what they both have to offer or not? Can it work or not? Can Zach and Presley forgive and forget, learn to trust ...or not? Will the town give them time and space? And just when you think you know, you don't! It's a bumpy ride, y'all, so hold on tight. As noted, though, there's a lot of beauty in the midst of all the pain and hurt--loving families and friends, a tight knit community, and a vastness that feels only possible in ranching communities--and it's the beauty that helps take the edge off the hard stuff.

If you're looking for a second chance romance, cowboys, or having a larger than life love in a small town this might be just the series for you--and if you love it, Wyatt and Trent (Zach's brothers) have books coming out this year!

I moved on. Marriage. Kids. White picket fence. Everything I ever wanted, but my husband betrayed me and I was left once again.

Alone, penniless, and with two boys, I had no choice but to return to Tennessee. He wasn’t supposed to be there. I should’ve been safe. However, fate has a way of stepping in.

This time around, the tables are turned. It’s my decision. Second chances do exist, but I don’t know if we can repair what’s already been broken . . .

EXCERPT:

“Hey.” Zach peers at me as I shake off my thoughts. “I figured you’d be asleep.” He climbs the steps slowly as I get to my feet.
“I figured you’d be gone.”
I walk toward him, unsure of why he’s here. “I left for a bit, but wanted to come check on you.”
“Oh.”
He snickers. “I couldn’t sleep.”
“Me either.” He’s close enough that I can smell his cologne. Even after a long night, being in the woods, he smells like home.
I take another step.
Then another.
I’m so close I have to tilt my head to look into his eyes.
I breathe him in, feel his heat, and I can’t stop myself. I want him. I need him. I grip his neck and yank his mouth to mine. I kiss him. I kiss him and give in to everything I’ve been feeling. He doesn’t waste a second. His arms wrap around me, holding my body against his. My fingers grip his neck, keeping him exactly where I need him. This kiss is frantic, but God it feels good.
