Our Review---
How funny is it that on Christmas day we are reviewing two books on completely opposite sides of the spectrum?! We have A Christmas to Remember which is full of sweet and Reviving Izabel which is full of assassins. Scroll through the blog and you'll find A Christmas to Remember because now we need to discuss the awesome sauce that is this novel. That is too funny. Can't say we aren't about variety right? 

I LOVED this novel. I want to be Izabel. I want to live in this novel. I want to be a badass assassin. WTF is wrong with me? I swear I'm not a morally reprehensible person...but J.A. Redmerski inspires the badass in me, what can I say?!! It would be the ultimate fantasy not to kill people, but to get to jet around and be a badass right? Yes. I wanna be Izabel too. I'll fight you for the title. She is in a completely different place than when we first met her in Killing Sarai. She has shed the life she knew for over 9 years and she is trying to lead a "normal" life. Like what is that really? I like Victor's version better! 

When we meet up with Sarai/Izabel at the beginning the novel, she's put a plan in place to destroy that bastard Hamburg. She ends up in California, in his restaurant, and things happen...and the next thing you know Victor is saving her ass. From that moment on we see Sarai fade into Izabel...assassin in training. We also witness them trying to find their footing in the fledgling relationship that they began months earlier. But you can read about all of this in the synopsis...let me try to tell you some other things I love about this book while simultaneously trying NOT TO SPOIL anything.

 I swooned when she woke up and there he is dead guy at his feet. That is the epitome of Victor. He's like a shadow, but is hot and also completely different this time around. I really enjoyed the fact that J.A. evolved these characters to feel much more fluid and realistic. 

I love how Sarai/Izabel and Victor struggle to understand their emotions..or really even name them. I don't know why I love this..I just do. It just feels honest. I do too! That is not them, or I mean to say big romantic gestures are not them. At all. And even though that is true, it fits them completely.

 I love the dynamic between Izabel and Victor. The emotions, the tests, the questioning...all of it made me want to turn the page faster...while also wanting to either slow the novel down or add about 1000 pages to it. Right? The whole second half of the story shocked the ever living hell out of me. Shocked me. That should be a thrilling endorsement for ya, there! 

I love the new and old characters we are exposed to. The good guys and the bad guys are so interesting and fun to read. Fredrick...swoon! 

I love how Izabel pushes herself...never wants to be weak..never allows for excuses..she just goes balls to the wall. She never reacts the way Victor thinks she will. I love it when she knocks his socks off! 

I love the thoughts Victor has on mistakes--he tells her: "You can't learn to swim by reading it in a book" and he goes on to say "To learn from your mistakes is to make them. Authentically. No amount of training, no rehearsed scenario is going to teach you better than the real thing". I would like to make that the mantra for all of my graduating seniors; it's something they (and I) need to remind myself of in this world of  being pushed to constantly seek perfection. I'll work on getting that made for you ;). It's true. It's scary when you're the one doing it, but jumping in with both feet is so much fun! I like all of the deep undertones you're pointing out for me. 

I love that New Orleans weaves her way into the story--I've actually been to the bar mentioned there and the descriptions of the bar, the street, the town were perfect as always. That is awesome! (I giggle when there are NOLA references because I know Shel gets excited, then apprehensive because those are her stomping grounds!)

I love that Victor's last name is Faust--a name in classical literature associated with making a deal with the devil..was that on purpose or an accident? And, if on purpose, it makes me wonder what the deal is and who would be considered the devil. I have some ideas but I won't bore you with those. See...that is awesome. I did not know that. Hhhmmm. I wanna know y'alls thoughts. Read this asap and tell us! 

I loved all of the twists and turn and that I was on my toes. To say we freaked out at the end of this one is an understatement.

I loved being in the mind of TWO badasses. In the Company of Killers...who knew it would be so awesome. ;) 

I want about a bizillion more of these novels. I ..uh..I really don't have the best words to truly capture the BIG, HUGE love I have for this novel. Please just go and buy it and read it. In the meantime of our freakout, she gives us a picture into the future. It seems as though more than one novel is coming! We can't wait! Cannot wait for Fredrick's book! Eeep!

Our Review---
This is a fantastic way to end your Christmas day--curled up with this book of novellas. If  you're like me, you'll whiz through them..enjoying writers you already like and meeting some new ones that you'll soon be adding to your TBR list. OMG YES! These novellas were so much fun. They all have the Christmas time of year theme, but still tied in each authors other stories. So much love for these! 

Each of these shorts are connected to established novel series, but having only read one of the writers included in this compilation, I did not feel lost at all! Each of these stories have the perfect balance of background information without overwhelming you with too much. They all have such sweet visions of Christmas and family and love. 

Yes, we are well established fans of Kristen Ashley and LOVED the Christmas look into the world of the Chaos MC. But I found that we've been missing out on these other authors! Truly everyone should check them out because I was seriously impressed! Whether you're looking for new beginnings and second chances with Kristen Ashley, Hope Ramsay and Marilyn Pappano or tons of fun with Molly Cannon (this one seriously was funny, cracked up a lot!) or the action packed fire-fighter/best friend romance from Jill Shalvis...I think there is something for everyone in this collection! 

I found myself actually wanting to read more about all of these characters...which is dangerous when you already have literally 100's of books on a Kindle that still need to be read. GAH! ME TOO! We need more books like a hole in the head, but what is that saying...finish one...buy five more? Yeah. That is us to a T. We are booksessed y'all!

Our Review---
I knew when I started getting the F-bomb texts from Courtney that this novel was going to be emotional...because usually it's ME that sends obscene texts!!! Yeah. Sigh, I think they started at 43%...so buckle up buttercup is my sound advice! 

If you've read the Up in the Air trilogy you know that something went terribly terribly wrong between Danika and Tristan. This book finally ...FINALLY gives us the back story to their awful break up/break down/broken-fucked uppedness. The prologue warns us that this will be a sad tale and that was no lie. ACK! More information is available for me out there. I apologize to the R.K. Lilley gods that I have not finished that series. I have such good intentions (about pretty much everything) and haven't. Let me just say that fever is revived. James Cavendish is delish. 

We begin the story with Danika and Tristan still reeling from Jared's death; they are both a mess but Tristan just cannot seem to get his shit together. He seeks solace in Danika, his friends, drugs and alcohol, the band...and nothing seems to alleviate the grief and pain that remains, except Danika...which we all know cannot be healthy. As their story progresses, Danika tries to soften the grief with love and sex and kindness and zero judgment. When Tristan's not around, she throws herself into work, dance, school, Frankie...she's determined to keep busy and work through her own sadness at losing Jared and watching Tristan self destruct. The bottom line with these two, though, is that as great as they are together they are in a place in their lives where they just seem to incessantly damage each other. From one major event to another, they are arguing, making up, sinking into their love bubble, and REPEAT but never really moving forward..and at some point even taking steps backwards. Co-dependent? Enabler/enablee? Unhealthy? You want them to work so much because they obviously love each other so much but sometimes ...is love enough to superglue the shards of a broken relationship back together again? We will have to wait to see since book 3 doesn't come out until early 2014. 

Oh my gosh. Do they have the worst luck ever or what? But sadly, like you've explained...some of it isn't luck. It is seriously the free will of Tristan that keeps him sinking down into the black hole he finds himself in, and Danika just trying not to rock the boat and not talking to her support system (Bev & Jerry) and finding a resolution. They make some BIG damn decisions, and every time things seem to come together for them, they fall apart in such a big irreparable way. This story was absolutely beautiful in my opinion. It is dirty and sexy and what is it that Jamie McGuire says..."Not your mother's romance..." Yeah. It is definitely not that. I have seen relationships like theirs in action with friends in high school with the dysfunction and fights (Thank God no drugs) but it is real and it hurts and I think these two have to fix themselves before they can fix each other! 

I loved the way R.K. Lilley approached the writing in this novel. The melancholy undercurrent set the perfect tone for the events as they unraveled. The sense that this novel is Danika and Tristan looking back at what a mess they made..the hindsight...makes it that much sadder. I hated that Danika always had to be so strong and yet had so much respect and admiration for refusing to let the bad define her. And, I hated that Tristan was so grief-stricken that he continually disappointed us (even still I completely loved him too!). These two went through so much together--R.K. Lilley definitely put them through the emotional ringer--and I cannot wait to see how she resolves their story!

You'll notice that there a few words that Danika says throughout her monologues that clearly foreshadow the future. That made me sad. But I still hoped through most of the novel that it might not be as bad and as soul crushing as it was rumored to be. It was. Don't be afraid though. This is by far one of my favorite series of this entire year, because do you know how much it made me feel reading it? A fucking lot. So fucking much. I waited hours until Shelley was done reading and writing her review to put my thoughts together. I've had some weird emotional crap going on and yesterday I cried while writing a review. Today...I was laying in my bed having finished this book...I laid my kindle down...I thought about it...and just cried. Cried a lot. Because this is serious real life shit. And as I have said probably way too much in this review, I loved every single second of it. Tristan still has my heart, and I hope that the final installment will maybe not "gut me like a fish" as I so eloquently was tweeting Ms. Lilley this morning! 

We reviewed the first book in the series here so we hope that you will give these a try and be all sorts of masochistic with us.
